FENWICK, Sydney S., a seaman, born Dunedin New Zealand, married at South Melbourne in 1915 to Florence DONLEY, a widow nee LAVERNE. In 1917 the pair quarrelled and Florence admitted that her first husband was still alive. Police investigate and find Edward DONLEY living in Sydney, with another woman, by whom he has several children. Bigamy is proved. Fenwick meanwhile has gone overseas for six months. On his return he declines to prosecute and returns to live with Florence. 12 pages, List 6.

FISH, Walter Edward of Canadian Cigar and Manf. Co. Nicola, B.C., wrote in 1915 re his sister Bessie Ellen, ‘or any of her family’. She was late of Gorleston Great Yarmouth England, and left there c20 years ago. Her mother Laura Ellen died in Melbourne 10 years ago. FISK, Margarette Emma Elizabeth. Scotland Yard seek her antecedents in 1917. She poses as a philanthropist, has a practice as a dentist, but is not successful. She gave a large garden party for Australian troops in Windsor (England), but is sued by suppliers of tents etc. Geelong police report she is one of the daughters of John Dennistoun and Margaret BROWN, and married Alfred Joseph FISK in 1889 at Geelong; the pair ‘lived beyond their means’. Her sisters are Mrs. Robert BUCHANAN, and Sarah, widow of the late Sir Charles John HOAD, late commander of the Aust. Forces, who don’t speak to her. 9 pages, List 6.

FOSTER, Elizabeth of Leominster Herefordshire England, wrote in 1863. Her husband John had left her ten years before, and she had last heard nine years ago. His brother James in England had received a letter from a mining manager reporting that John had died in a mining accident in Victoria in 1862. FRANK, Otto, wrote in 1895, concerned about fellow passenger August HETTY. The pair had arrived from Tonga Islands, and Hetty had got so drunk he had to be left behind when the ship sailed to Sydney. FRANKE, Carl Albert. Left his wife Jean and three children in 1916 to work with a coach builder in New Zealand. Stopped sending maintenance in 1918, so wife asked police to find him. He was born 1886 Woorak, 31 years of age, and used the name Albert FRANKLIN. Located, he applies to return to Australia but N.Z. government refuse. 22 pages, List 16.

FRYBERG, Horace Harrington. Chief Constable Glamorgan Wales writes in 1918 re this man, who has been sentenced to six months for fraud etc., and is believed to have been born in Melbourne. Local police report he was born in Carlton, enlisted in the AIF in 1914 and was discharged medically unfit in 1916, then re-enlisted in 1916 but was discharged at his own request shortly afterwards. His parents are interviewed and report that he ‘has always been a worry to them, was injured at Gallipoli’ etc. 11 pages, List 6.

HARRINGTON, Edward, died at Inglewood in 1891, a bachelor, 76 years. A friend, George FREEMAN, wrote to advise family in U.S.A. In 1895 U.S. Consul in Melbourne writes on behalf of his relatives, that Freeman was to provide further details but did not. He had not responded to letters from them. Police find that Freeman died in 1893, and his family revealed ‘an insulting letter’ from the relatives, claiming Harrington had property and they were holding on to it. Glasgow Parish Council writes from 1913-1917 re this man, 38 years, a bricklayer, born Glasgow, who sailed to Australia in 1912 as an assisted immigrant, leaving a wife and three young children behind. He intended to send for them later. He sent little money for support, and probably through worry the wife has become insane and the children are in Council care. Hislop was nominated by Mr. RODGERS of Beaconsfield Parade Port Melbourne. Police find that Rodgers had got rid of him as he was a drunkard. In 1914 police find he joined the AIF and was sent to Egypt, but also that he had remarried bigamously. His marital exploits detailed; marriages to Janet BEVERIDGE (died 1907) produced two children, Milia and Peter, and to Annie McELHINNEY produced three.
