CAFFREY, David, ex Sgt R.I.C., Belfast Ireland, wrote in 1913 re siblings William, Joseph and Elizabeth, born Carnaveagh, Co Cavan, not heard from for 28 years.  Not found.  9 pages, List 63.

CAHILL, Miss Mollie, of Cork Ireland, wrote in 1913 re her uncle James Cahill, born in 1854 and formerly of Mallow, who went to Melbourne years ago, also her sister Mrs TRACEY. Police find James served in the Victorian police force, but left in 1879 and can’t be located. 8 pages, List 12.

CAIN, James, sought by nephew Thomas Cain Jnr, Syracuse, New York, USA in 1910, on behalf of his father.  He was Irish, shipwrecked c50 years ago, would be c70 years.  Various James Cains contacted, but no relation.  13 pages, List 41.

CAINE, W.C.  American Consul in Melbourne forwards letter from Caine, of Chicago Illinois, 1905, re his uncle John Caine, thought to have been murdered ‘in the early days of the colony’.  His father James H. Caine was John’s only brother, and they had lived in Newport, Mayo, Ireland.   Report gives early history of European settlement in Victoria, and concludes that the person meant is probably John KEANE a shepherd, whose body was burnt in an attempt to hush up his murder.  18 pages

CAINES, William Richard, sought by Walter E. GREGORY of Theatre Royal Melbourne in 1897, on behalf of English friends.  He was born in 1842 in Poole, Dorsetshire England, parents were Harry and Susan.  Last heard of in 1877.  Found.  20 pages, List 35.

CAINEY, Joseph, of Parlie Scotland, wrote in 1918 re his son Michael, last heard from in Echuca seven years ago, would be 28 years of age. Not found. 13 pages, List 13.

CALLAGHAN, Winifred M., of New York City U.S.A., wrote in 1892 re her brothers Michael and James FLEMING, born Loghstown, Blessingtown, Co. Wicklow, who left there about 26 years ago, and were last heard of in Melbourne.  2 pages. List 2.

CALLAHAN, John, Troy, New York, USA, wrote in 1905 re Edward and Mark SHEEHY, brothers, last heard of in Melbourne c10 years ago.  The enquiry was on behalf of their sisters Bridget and Mary, the latter his mother.  Found.  5 pages, List 44

CAMERON, Robert, and sister Mrs Ann STEEDS, left Scotland c1855 for Melbourne, along with Rev. Ronald RANKIN and Rev. Angus McDONALD, Catholic priests.  Information on them was sought in 1901 by Charles S.M. Cameron, Boston Mass, USA.  Robert and his brother Allan were seaman, born Fort William, Inverness.  21 pages, List 40.

CAMERON, Robert, wrote from Vancouver British Columbia in 1917 re his brother Alexander, last heard of 24 years ago in Melbourne. He was a builder and carpenter, a native of Greenock Scotland, and had two children, Donald and Lizzie. Police report he had died, but locate his son in Western Australia. 10 pages, List 6.

CAMM, Alfred B. of Hornsey London England writes in 1914 re Gordon BRAWN who was engaged to his daughter and was in the Australian Imperial Force.  5 pages.

CAMMACK, Miss Ada, of Fairfield Liverpool England, wrote in 1915 re William CAMMACK, who left England many years ago, is aged c76 years. Not found. 5 pages, List 8.

CAMPBELL, Alexander wrote from Brandon, Manitoba, Canada in 1892 re his uncle Donald CAMPBELL, a native of near Thurso, Caithness, Scotland, who emigrated to Australiac1860 and married a wealthy widow.  2 pages.  List 2.

CAMPBELL, Mrs Carrie, Centralia, Illinois USA, wrote in 1908 asking police to find her only child Clarence TISDALE, last heard of in 1907 when with the Fisk Jubilee Singers.  Newspaper photo of him on file; found.  4 pages, List 59.

CAMPBELL, J., Bombardier No. 2993, 51st Battalion, wrote from England in 1918.  He had been overseas for 3 years, and been wounded; reports that his wife in Albert Park has been sent a blackmailing letter about her behaviour and asks police to investigate.  She makes statement that she was involved in the Hedley Jones divorce case.  7 pages, List 50.

CAMPBELL, James, solicitor, of Saltcoats, Ayrshire, Scotland wrote in 1914 re Robert HERDMAN, who left there as a ship’s steward in 1892 and hadn’t been heard from since.  He was presumed dead, but is now believed to be alive, and as such is entitled to a share of his late father’s estate.  16 pages.

CAMPBELL, John Lawrence, architect and civil engineer, sailed from Antwerp 1891.  His wife Agnes has heard nothing since and is left with five children to support.  He was aged 40 years, and Scotch.  She wrote from Bishopston, Bristol, England in 1892.  2 pages, List 2.

CAMPBELL, John Thomas, sought by father Thomas of Winchombe, Gloucestershire in 1898.   He sent money for his return but he hasn’t arrived.  Found in Eaglehawk.  8 pages, List 26.

CAMPBELL, Katherine, daughter of Frank and Sarah nee DOUGHERTY, born Co. Sligo Ireland, transported for stealing c1857; sought by sibling James/Jane  Campbell of Mornoyuck [?], Philadelphia USA in 1895. [writing difficult to read]  2 pages, List 29.

CAMPBELL, Ronald, Bank of New Brunswick, Summerside, Prince Edward Island, wrote in 1913 re his brother Hector, c70 years.  Not found.  15 pages, List 73.

CAMPBELL, Roderick.  Wrote from Sydney in 1910, applying to join police force.  He had just arrived from Scotland, was 26yrs old, and enclosed copies of references form Rev. Angus FIDDES and Rev. R. MacKENZIE, both of Isle of Skye.  3 pages, List 18.

CAMPBELL, Webb, sought by father Captain S.W. Campbell of Ashland, Wisconsin USA in 1913.  He served in the 3rd Regiment during the Spanish American War.  42 years.  Poster on file includes photo.  Not found.  6 pages, List 65.

CAMPBELL, Mrs William, of Dumbarton Scotland, wrote in 1912 re William KERR, who left Co. Antrim Ireland c30 years ago for the Darling River, but was later in Melbourne or Sydney. All William Kerr’s in directory checked, but none at the correct person. 13 pages, List 15.

CANCARE, Giuseppe, sought by Italian Consul in Melbourne in 1914. He arrived February 1913, is a marble worker and decorator, aged c21 yrs. Not found. 6 pages, List 7 .

CANE, Elizabeth (or SPENCE) sought by Mary DOHERTY, Douglas, Isle of Man, in 1900.  No other details given; not found.  2 pages, List 38.

CAPLES, John, 71 years, found dead at Bendigo in 1912.  In 1913 nephews John RYAN, Thurles, Ireland and Michael Ryan, Limerick, Ireland sought details of his estate.  14 pages, List 64.

CARE, Mrs Ada, and 2 sons Leslie and Bert BROACH, left Manchester England in 1912 and came to Melbourne.  They had purchased a piano on hire purchase from J.A. CROSS of Manchester and bought it with them.  In 1914 Cross claims they had not paid it off and seeks police help in getting payment.  Albert Broach maintains they had paid about a third of it off, and will pay the rest when he inherits money from the estate of the late Ann Broach, but Cross says this is not true.  8 pages, List 31

CAREY, E.W. British Consulate-General, San Francisco, wrote in 1905 in response to request from Victorian police, providing a confidential report on E.W. Carey, sometimes HUELIN, who was now believed to be in Honolulu. His wife Marion was in England. Lydia SALVANA mentioned; file is incomplete. 3 pages, List 15.

CAREY, Fanny, Palmerston North, New Zealand, wrote in 1916 re husband James Joseph’s relatives.  He was the son of Patrick and Margaret, who were farmers at Panmure near Warrnambool; they had 8 children.  Has heard nothing from them for 25 years.  8 pages, List 53.

CAREY, William, sought by sister Mrs Sarah H. WILSON, Philadelphia UA in 1907.  He was married and his three children were named Thomas, Isaac and Christine.  Found.  6 pages, List 48.

CARLAND, Thomas P., wrote from Philada, [Philadelphia?] Penns., USA in 1895 re uncle and three cousins, Robert, William, Elizabeth and Mary Jane AULL.  2 pages, List 28.

CARLTON, Andrew. Governor Genera’s office forwards letter from Mrs. Carlton of Liverpool England in 1919 re her husband Andrew Carlton, last heard of in Melbourne. He uses the name Thomas BURNS. Not found. 7 pages, List 15.

CARMINE, Joseph, born New Zealand, suicided at Jumbunna in 1899.  Sister Mrs T.M. SWAFFORD and brother L. Carmine, both in NZ, seek details.  16 pages, List  36.

CARNEY (or KEARNEY), Owen.  Sought by niece Mrs David SHAW, San Francisco USA in 1895.  Found.  List 79.

CAROLAN, Myles, constable, Dublin Metro Police, asked if he could transfer to Victoria police in 1910.  He had 10 years’ experience, was 30 years old.  3 pages, List 41.

CARR, Frank, ‘champion window dresser of the world’ deserted wife Ida L. and children in Brooklyn and ran off with Ida Van Voorhis (?).  In 1900 wife wrote seeking his whereabouts, believed he may have committed bigamy.  Found.  5 pages, List 39.

CARR, John, or KERR-HYRS, sought by wife in Liverpool England in 1914; he was a fireman who had deserted ship.  Some of his movements traced.  26 pages, List 78.

CARSON, Mrs. Ellen of Toronto Canada, wrote in 1918 re her brother John W. LYNN, last heard from in Melbourne. He was going to return to Canada, but has never arrived. Found by police. 4 pages. List 6.

CARSON, John.  Cathcart Parish Council Glasgow Scotland wrote in 1914 seeking information.  They have been supporting his wife and family for six months and want him to send maintenance.  Found.  5 pages, List 31.

CARSON, Mrs. Louisa. Royal Irish Constabulary’s Office, Dublin, wrote in 1899 for a report on her character; she gets a pension. 5 pages, List 17.

CARTER, Miss A., of Northwich, Cheshire England, wrote in 1913 re her brother William Henry, who left for Australia in 1906 on account of his health, and was last heard from in 1908. Found. 7 pages, List 12.

CARTER, Henrietta M., Worthing, Sussex, wrote in 1904 re her brother Frederick M. LAKER and wife Amy, who haven’t replied to her letters for some years.  Found.  5 pages, List 49.

CARTER, John, son of Charles and Martha, late of Eston, Middlesex England, went to Melbourne c36 years ago, would now be about 56 years.  Sought in 1915 by Mrs George BERRY, nee Jessie Carter GRANT of Cheetham Hill, Manchester.  Various men are checked, but the correct one is not found.  27 pages, List 80.

CARTER, T.A., of Cambridgeport, Mass., USA, wrote in 1893 re William CARTER, who went to Melbourne in 1852.  1 page, List 3.

CARTER, Wesley, sought by only brother Ralph, Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada, in 1914.  He left there 25-30 yeasr ago.  Not found.  6 pages, List 77.

CARTER, William Absalom, eldest son of late Martin Carter of Staffordshire, wrote from Digbeth, Walsall,  England, in 1904, re Thomas POWELL who married his oldest sister Isabella, and was once in the police force.  Names two other sisters, Matilda and Mary Ann.  5 pages, List 22.

CARVER, Frederick, Wimbledon, Surrey, England, wrote in 1916 re the death of his brother William, who had boarded with the DALLING family at Parkville for many years; they refuse to hand over his property.  6 pages, List 53.

CASE, Mrs Sophia, Providence, Rhode Island, wrote in 1905 seeking her brother Henry Howard EDGAR, c50 years.  Not found.  8 pages, List 46.

CASS, Denis, wrote from Calean, Co Kilkenny Ireland in 1901 re brothers Edward and John; former had been a teacher.  Found.  5 pages, List 40.

CASSELLS, William, sold gold in Ballarat in 1911; claimed came from New Zealand where he had been working in a mine, but this is disproved.  He returned to New Zealand to his father in law McFARLANE before police could take action.  12 pages, List 68.

CATHERALL, Samuel, wrote from Chester in 1899 re his father of the same name, who left his wife and four children in 1860 for Australia, and was to send money, but never did.  He has heard his father has another family, and wants to charge him with a criminal offence.  8 pages, List 36

CAUSLEY, William.  Wrote from Thames New Zealand in 1899 re woman who ‘took up with Christian Israelites’ and left there with a preacher named TRIMMER, a former baker who had a wife and family.  Police find she was pregnant.  8 pages, List 23.

CAVANAGH, Owen J., of Buffalo, New York USA, wrote in 1908 re his relative Mrs. Elizabeth KAVANAGH, who was born Cory, Co. Wexford and was last heard of in Melbourne. He writes on letterhead of Marine Firemen, Oilers and Watertenders Benevolent Association. Police report she has died. 4 pages, List 10.

CAVANAUGH, Patrick and James, sought by brother John of Lincoln, Ill., US in 1898, last heard of 30 years ago when James was at Castlemaine.  Not found.  5 pages, List 24.

CAVENAGH, Eugene, died Medan, Sumatra in 1896, formerly jockey.  In 1900 Consul General for the Netherlands asks police to find relatives – brother Patrick found after extensive search.  38 pages, List 38.

CAVANAGH, Patrick Allen.  Information sought by solicitors in 1900, acting for estate of Eugene Cavanagh who died in 1896.  Traced through Qld and details given, but not found.  Letter to Annie REILLY, Qld on file.  16 pages, List 39.  Second file has photo of another Patrick Allen Cavanagh, taken in 1897, which was returned by the solicitors, as being too young for the person they sought, an older man in his 50s, this person appeared to be c30 yrs.  List 79.

CHAMBOISSIER, Pascal, wrote from Algeria in 1900, asking police to inform Pierre Chamboissier that his mother had died.  4 pages, List 18.

CHAPMAN, Alice, wrote from Blackpool England in 1912, re husband William, last heard of in Melbourne, a lithographer.  Found, he claims he has sent money for her and their child to join him.  Further letter from Alice states money never sent.  List 33.

CHAPMAN, Mrs Ellen of Leeds, Yorkshire England, wrote in 1912 re her husband George, an ironmoulder, who left there in 1908 and was 32 years of age. Photograph on file. 18 pages, some torn, List 15.

CHAPMAN, Mrs E.R., Musselburgh, Dunedin, New Zealand, wrote in 1916 re husband Ernest J., a builder.  Believed in Melbourne with sister Alice, an artist.  Hasn’t seen him for 20 years.  6 pages, List 52.

CHAPMAN, John, professional cyclist, supposed to have left for San Francisco in 1901 but hadn’t arrived, and his mother is anxious.  R.M. MINTON of Atlanta USA writes on her behalf.  5 pages, List 40.

CHAPMAN, William, sought by grandson William, Clydebank, Scotland in 1910.  He was a joiner, in business in Townsville with William McLARDY c1890, then came to Melbourne.  Not heard from for 18 years. 9 pages, List 65.

CHAPMAN, William, sought by youngest daughter Mrs David/Daniel McINTOSH, Newton on Ayr, Scotland, in 1911.  Found at Moorabbin.  5 pages, List 68.

CHAPPLE, E., Plymouth England, wrote in 1917 re her son S.E., who was a trimmer on the ‘Shropshire’ and was missing.  5 pages, List 48.

CHARD, Ernest, sought by Chief Constable, Plymouth UK,  in 1910, on behalf of his wife.  He was a seaman, 35 years etc.  4 pages, List 27.

CHARLESTON, ‘Professor’.  Phrenologist, ‘New York Orator’; on lecture tour of Gippsland 1899.  Report on his activities, poster on file; married Miss LETU in Orbost.  16 pages, List 23.

CHARLESWORTH, Absolum, wrote from East Clive [?] Haslington near Crewe, Cheshire England in 1894, re his son Albert.  Someone wrote asking for money, using his son’s name, and ‘the suspense is near killing me’ as to what has happened to his son.  Eventually located; lost his money in bank crash. 19 pages, List 4.

CHARLESWORTH, James.  Chief Constable of Hyde, England wrote in 1902 re this man who left there c5 years previously and was last heard of at Abbotsford.  His wife is destitute.  James’s uncle George is interviewed, and file states that he too had left a wife behind in England.  James is located.  17 pages, List 43.

CHATTERTON, Thomas, and sons Charles Joseph and David Smedley, were sought by Thomas’s unnamed brother who wrote from Pawtucket, Rhode Island in 1901.  They arrived in Melbourne in 1857 and he hadn’t heard for 25 years.  Family found.  21 pages, List 40.

CHAZAN, K., wrote from Margate Kent England in 1896 re brother A. BENSON;, his last letter to him was returned marked ‘deceased’.  He was a bachelor and businessman.  Police find William ELLIOTT who worked for him for years and states that he died in the Benevolent Asylum in 1895, a pauper and insolvent.  5 pages, List 33.

CHEETHAM, Joseph, Lowell, Mass., USA, wrote in 1909 re John, Patrick, Katherine and Johanna REARDON, ahd previously enquired in 1907.  Not found.  4 pages, List 61.

CHELLEW, T.J., solicitor, Saint Ives, Cornwall, wrote in 1896 re William R. HODGE, who had died at the Albert goldfields in NSW; supposed to have assets at Sandhurst; no trace.  5 pages, List 34.

CHESNEY, Mrs L.A., Martons Junction, Rangitikei, New Zealand, wrote in 1913 re the death of her brother William Henry NICHOLLS; none of his family have been informed of his death.  7 pages, List 74.

CHEVALIER, Captain J.F., Harbour Office, Jersey, Channel Islands.  Wrote a number of letters in 1898 regarding Mrs. Margaret KIRKER, who was sent from there to Melbourne by her friends.  She was born in Belfast Ireland in 1868, is an alcoholic, her late husband Dr. Nathaniel MORTON divorced her and obtained custody of the only child – ‘painful for me to write’.  18 pages, List 23.

CHRISTENSEN, E, wrote from Thames, New Zealand in 1909 re maintenance owed by husband T.C. Christensen, believed in Brunswick.  Found, but declines to help.  5 pages, List 48.

CHRISTEY, Annie Marion. Sought by C.R. Christey of Waiuku, Auckland New Zealand in 1915, claiming to be her brother. She is living with a man named CREAMER. New Zealand police report that he is her husband; he persuaded her to leave her husband McDONALD, and live with him. McDonald divorced her and they married c2 years ago. She has now run off with his savings and Creamer. 10 pages, List 8.

CHRISTIE, Mrs A., Towai, Bay of Islands, Auckland New Zealand, wrote in 1908 re newspaper report of an accidental death; is it her son Willie, 22 years.  7 pages, List 59.

CHRISTY, W.J., dentist, Melbourne.  Mother wrote from Chicago in 1903, hasn’t heard from him for a year; found.  3 pages, List 46.

CHUNDEE, Latchoo, sought by brother Indur of Port Louis, Mauritius in 1897.  He left there c8 years ago, and not heard from in 6 years.  Police trace his employment history, known as Louis CHUNDA.  12 pages List 35.

CHURCH, William, left U.K. in 1874 for Brisbane, last heard from by sister Mrs. T. TURNER in 1884.  Rev. F. Monkhouse SPARKS wrote from Aston Rowant Vicarage, Tetsworth, Oxon in 1896.  Found.  10 pages, List 31.

CHURCHES, Joseph, native of Somersetshire, left there for New Zealand c1859 then came to Australia to manage butchering business.  In 1909 his great nephew Frank ADAMS of Bristol England, asked police to find him.  Copy of death certificate on file.  8 pages, List 62.

CIPRIANY, Louis.  French Consul enquired on behalf of the French Foreign Legion in 1883; he arrived in Melbourne c1876.  Found.  14 pages, List 52.

CIVIL, Ralph William, 18 years, left London in 1914 for Australia.  Alfred DRAKARD, Commonwealth Offices London, wrote on behalf of his mother in 1915.  She was worried because she hadn’t heard from him.  Faded photo on file.  Found.  8 pages, List 80.

CLAMPETT, George, alias CAMPBELL.  Commissioner of Police, Johannesburg, South Africa, wrote in 1905 re this man, recently convicted there, and believed to have been a criminal in Victoria.  Photographs and fingerprints sent, but local police have no record of him.  He was a native of Montreal, Canada, aged 27 years.  5 pages, List 5.

CLAPHAM, William Edward, Yeadon North Leeds, wrote in 1906 re uncle Thomas IBBITSON, his mother Hannah’s brother, who supposedly died wealthy at Kangaroo Flat.  3 letters on file.  9 pages, List 49.

CLARIDGE, William Leonard.  Discreet enquiries sought by father Tom, London, England, in 1914.  William, c26 years, went to Melbourne some time ago, and has written to his sisters [copy on file] claiming he can’t work because of an accident and needs to pay a hospital bill.  Report confirms claim and explains circumstances. 9 pages, List 78.

CLARK, Agnes wrote from Auckland New Zealand in 1919, sought maintenance for herself and four children from husband Langdon.  The family had been in Sydney.  15 pages.

CLARKE, – (Mrs.) of Low Hill, Liverpool, England, wrote in 1918 re her husband William, whom she married in 1911 in Birkenhead; was formerly in British Navy.  She has heard he has married another woman named Lucy HACKENSCHMIDT.  5 pages.

CONRAN, William Massey, of Burbank, USA wrote in 1917 re descendants of D.M. Conran, Sergt H.M. 50th Regiment, or his son Hubert, who left Manchester England in 1848, a civil engineer and railroad surveyor, also descendants of James, born 1808 Ballingmore Parish, Ballenlop, Co Wicklow Ireland. Police interview all Conrans in Victoria, who are no relation. The file then sent to Queensland, and a Mary Conran undertakes to write to him, although she thinks no relation. 12 pages, List 6.

They were married in England in 1916; he went to New Zealand and she was to follow, but he sent a telegram postponing her trip. He was then boarding with a Mrs. BETTS at Onehunga, and Cecily believed he was in a relationship with Lucille Betts. Mrs. Betts confirmed he went to Melbourne with Lucille and Maud RICH. Both New Zealand and Victorian police are involved in trying to track him down, which they eventually do. 23 pages, List 11.

ELLIOTT, Alfred Meadows, solicitor, Hastings England, wrote in 1915 re Ernest Edward TRINDER who left there in 1914. He has acted for him in the past and Trinder has left a picture with him for safe keeping. Elliott has joined the army and wants to know what to do with it. Found. 5 pages, List 8.

EMERSON, M.S., Solicitor, Norfolk England, wrote in 1912 on behalf of unnamed nephew of James DYE of Mt Clear near Ballarat.  The nephew is ill and has a wife and two children to support.  Dye died at Ballarat in 1888, and they are seeking a share of his estate.  There is a copy of a letter written by Dye to the nephew in 1888 on the file, along with details of the estate, which went to the grandson Felton GRIGGS.  8 pages, List 70.

ERASMUS, P., c/- Registrar Supreme Court, Pretoria Transvaal wrote in 1916 re Robert Joseph MADDEN who left South Africa c1897, supposedly for Australia. He had been a publication then had a shop in Natal, then a prospector in Swaziland. The matter was of ‘great importance’. 2 pages, List 6.

ERIKSSON, Axel Fredrick.  Consul for Sweden and Norway in Melbourne writes in 1903 re Eriksson, known in Melbourne as Axel JACKSON.  He was formerly a sailor, is now dead, and left a widow and three children.  They are entitled to a small inheritance. 4 pages, List 2.

ESSER, Carl Adolph Alphonse.  Information sought by the German Consul in Melbourne in 1902, on behalf of his sisters in Germany.  Found.  7 pages, List 42.

EVANS, Mrs. S., wrote in 1914 from Durban South Africa re her son Victor JACKSON, who she left with Miss [Selena] SUTHERLAND 16 years ago, and would now be about 23 yrs. He may be know as WATSON. Victor found, but the letter advising her is returned ‘insufficient address’. 6 pages, List 8.

EVANS, Thomas. Left wife Emily and two children in Victoria and returned to Durban South Africa in 1916, after she had caught him in bed with Sylvia WARNER of Nhill. Series of letters from wife. He had arrived in Victoria ‘after cohabiting with a native woman in Durban’ and bought his daughter from this relationship to Victoria, registering her as May Evans. She was now in a Home near Ballarat. Thomas was c38 years, and a commission agent. His brother C. Evans was a constable in the Vic. Police force. 26 pages. List 6.
