FAWKNER, Bessie, mother Annie, Bunyip, adopted by Charlotte M. KESSLER, Windsor in 1904.  Agreement on file.  She had already adopted Edith THOMPSON, born 1901.  5 pages, List 42.

FLAHIVE, Norah, mother Mrs. Annie, Windsor; with a nurse.  March 1904 Monthly Return, List 41.

FLANAGAN, Margaret. North Melbourne, 1898. Anonymous letter warns police department that the child she has, Annie Ellen KELLY, is being ‘half starved’. Police find it is the child of her brother Thomas KELLY, whose wife has died of consumption. 5 pages, List 2.

FLEET, Mrs. F.L. Mitcham, registered as a nurse, 1893; had one female child, unnamed.

FLEMING, Lily, South Melbourne, took care of illegitimate child George David SMITH, mother Matilda, grandmother Mrs. Eliza SMITH of Collingwood in 1896.  Not registered and child died.  To be prosecuted.  7 pages, List 24.

FLOOD, Rosana May Rose, 8 months old, died in the care of Mrs. Rosina MENSCH, her maternal grandmother in North Melbourne.  Her mother was dead and her father committed suicide shortly after.  The grandmother has the care of her three siblings.  5 pages, List 37.

FLYNN, Pauline Harris.  Adopted by J. WOODHEAD of Clifton Hill in 1904.  5 pages, List 6.

FORBES, Jessie, Port Melbourne, nurse has one child in her care.  February 1907 Monthly Return, List 34.

FORD, Nurse of Ballaat.  Reports she has handed child Jessie B. STEPHENS back to her mother Ada at Jerusalem, but police find Ada had handed over to Mrs. David BLOODWORTH of Talbot, whose husband was the alleged father. 5 pages, List 4.

FORD, E., Ballarat, advised in 1906 that she had taken in William, son of Theresa MURRAY of Sebastopol.  2 pages, List 53.

FORD, E., Ballarat, reports in 1906 that she has return William MURRAY to his mother Teresa, Sebastopol, and taken in Rachel Agnes MALONE, child of Anne.  2 pages, List 52.

FORREST, Charles, writes from Beechworth in 1897, advising that he has moved to a larger house; he had adopted Eric BLIGH in 1896.  8 pages, List 26.

FORSYTH, Mrs. A.H., Bunyip, adopted Lilian GRAY, child of Marion, in 1901.  3 pages, List 39.

FORSYTH/FORSYTHE, Ivy Elsie.  (very complicated story!) Born 1900, illegitimate child of Ellen/Eleanor, who was married to a Forsyth who died.  She went to live with father in law Robert Forsyth, near Stawell, and his nephew Robert John Forsyth is the father of the child.  He consequently married a Mrs. Ellen LEE, a widow ‘a coarse woman’ and mother Ellen subsequently married William STANTON.  She claimed maintenance from father, but he and his new wife take over care of the child, rather than pay amount owing.  Nurse Ellen McGINN of Horsham had the child.  List 15.

FORSYTH, Ivy, nearly 3 years old in 1903, adopted by Mrs. Elizabeth Sarah SUHAN of Terang.  3 pages, List 48.

FOTHERGILL, Frederick H.  Writes from Carlton in 1899; he plans to adopt Violet MERRINGTON.  7 pages, List 3.

FOUNTAIN, Elizabeth. Brunswick, registered as a nurse, 1893, had one male child, unnamed.

FOWLES, Alice, mother Mrs. Fowles, widow; with a nurse.  March 1904 Monthly Return, List 41.

FOX, Mrs. E., Fitzroy, applies to adopt child George HEWSON, illegitimate son of Alice, who came from Benalla to have child, in 1896.  Letter states she is a prostitute etc.  Report states she was ‘on the town’ but is now a fortune-teller.  She has 2 children of her own and her husband works at Mitcham tile works.  Child died of an inherited disease.  24 pages, List 25.

FRANCIS, Alfred Ernest, ship’s engineer, Albert Park.  Solicitors Rogers & Rogers write on his behalf re adopting female child of Mary Ann NORTHBY, currently with nurse Mrs. BASSAR of Carlton, in 1899.  Negative report on wife’s character; 2 children from his previous marriage are living with them.  6 pages, List 30.

FULTON, Julia A., South Melbourne, asked in 1900 if she could adopt child George THOMAS, son of Winifred of Stawell for £50.  Parents are going to the West; she has looked after him since birth.  Reply states child is over two years, so Act doesn’t apply.  4 pages, List 32.

GARE, John Huntley, Epsom, advised in 1907 that he had adopted his wife’s sister’s child Rose Stella WITTS.  3 pages, List 56.

GARNER, Sarah, Homebush, 1898.  Applies to register as a nurse, is the mother of 14 children, has Myrtle Beatrice HORNE, child of Catherine.  House too small.  13 pages, List 18.

GERADIN, Milly, 16 years, gave birth to illegitimate son Robert in mother’s house in St. Kilda in 1900.  Mother Martha BAILOTT charged with failure to register in time.  18 pages, List 35.

GERSTMAN, Vivian Hilda.  Of North Melbourne; applies to adopt Elizabeth Ellen MARTIN, daughter of Elizabeth, 1906.  5 pages, List 4.  Nurse A. SLEE advises that child has been adopted.  4 pages, List 4.

GIBBS, Elfrida nee ROWE, illegally adopted Henry BARRS, born 1904, child of Elizabeth BRENNAN and Harold BARRS who were married 3 months before, and put child up for adoption.  Child accidentally dies.  She had previously legally adopted Rose Mary MADDEN.  Court case.  Gibbs was ‘a giddy rather silly young woman, known to police, but loved children.’  List 13.

GILCHRIST, Minnie. Illegitimate child of Maggie GILCHRIST, who left her with a registered nurse in 1899. Mother behind with payments, so child put temporarily in Industrial School, then transferred to mother interstate, 1901.

GILL, Harnan, (or SINGH), dealer, single, lives in Casterton.  His cousin Gubenda Singh, now dead, asked him to look after his infant boy, 1900.  Gill took it to Mrs. Frances MARTYN and then Ellen VICKERY, and paid them.  Neither were registered nurses.  File re prosecution of Vickery and commitment of child to Industrial School.  18 pages, List 36.

GILL, Henry Edwards, infant, died at home of nurse PERKINS, Prahran in 1900.  Inquest jury critical of her care.  Investigation into age of mother, as Selina SUTHERLAND claimed 15 years, but nearly 17.  10 pages, List 37.

GILL, Vera, mother Mrs. Florrie, Fitzroy, with a nurse.  March 1904 Monthly Return, List 41.

GORIN/GORING, Ellen. Falsely claimed to be married to Thomas Gorin/Goring when registering birth of child Francis Thomas Goring in Hawthorn in 1900; her real name is MADDEN. Nurse Annie JONES of Hawthorn attended her confinement and looked after the child for some months; other nurse Elizabeth FORD of Ballyrogan near Buangor, mentioned. Mrs. Gorin interviwed, and reveals that Thomas left her c1897, was a former policeman.  Madden and Gorin are working on the property Challicum Station close to Buangor. Local police recommend no prosecution as the pair are living respectably together, and looking after child; this is agreed to.  42 pages, List 2
