ABBOTT, Elizabeth, West Brunswick, advised in 1899 that Mary ANGELO had taken back her baby Olive, then given her to another nurse.  Her employment detailed.  7 pages, List 30.

ABOOZAID, Rose. Daughter of Rose of Melbourne. With a nurse in Melbourne; April 1899 Monthly Return, List 1.

ADAM, Mrs. Mary.  Braybrook, to adopt Clarence, child of Janet BLAIR in 1904; 4 pages, List 6.

ADAMI, Giovanni Valentino, mother Grace FULLER, born at house of Mrs. Elenor WISSING, South Melbourne in 1906.  Fuller claimed she was married to Gustave Adami but it was after the birth.  File contains marriage certificate and discussion on case.  13 pages, List 52.

ADAMS, Isabel, wife of George, Carlton, advises she had adopted Wilfred Kenneth McKENZIE, child of Kate of Windermere, Ballarat in 1900.  4 pages, List 35.

ADAMS, Fanny.  In 1904, while living at Carlton, applied to become registered so she could take care of her sister Margaret TINKER’s illegitimate child, falsely registered as James Joseph PHILLIPS.  Margaret came from Bushfield near Warrnambool.  22 pages, List 10.

ADAMS, Isabella, Carlton, adopted Wilfred Kenneth, child of Kathleen McKENZIE, and took money from child’s father John SKEWS of Ballarat.  Reported by Miss GODFREY of North Melbourne as ill-treating the child, but case thrown out.  Her own two children are with her mother in Ballarat.  20 pages, List 38.

ADAMS, Jane, wrote from Golden Square in 1902, has taken child Ada CRAWFORD.  4 pages, List 18.

ADAMS, Mary.  Richmond, widow, 1894, took child Verdon Wallace ABSOLUM for her sister Mrs. WHITTAKER, but child died.  7 pages, List 6.

ADAMS, Nellie, gave birth to illegitimate child Reginald Adams in 1896; cared for by Sarah SLUICE of South Melbourne, but she was an unregistered nurse and was charged.  10 pages, List 28.

ADAMS, Victoria, came to Victoria from Tasmania and gave to an illegitimate female child at Nurse WILSON’s Private Hospital, Richmond in 1928.  She advertised for someone to adopt the child and Stella BARTON nee HARPLEY came from Sydney with a friend, gave a false name and took the child away without signing the papers.  The nurse advised police and media coverage followed.  The friend subsequently returned the child.  Stella’s ex husband later charged with a 1913 murder.  The child was subsequently adopted by Mrs. W.H. SMITH of the Lonsdale Bakery, Pleasant Hills, NSW. 8 pages, List 42.

ADLER, Carl, adopted by uncle Frederick Adler of Murtoa in 1897, the mother, his sister in law, died in childbirth.  6 pages, List 28.

ADLER, Hilda Marie, adopted by watchmaker Heinrich Friedrich PETERING of Murtoa in 1897.  7 pages, List 28.

AGAR, Mrs. E., South Yarra, wrote in 1898, seeking exemption from registering as a nurse. The mother of the child FORGON was in an asylum, and the husband and children lived with her.  List 1.

AH CUE, Lucy, 2 years, daughter of Sarah Hannah Lem CUE, Wangaratta, adopted by Stephen GON in 1902, her father’s cousin.  3 pages, List 43.

AIRD, Olive Emily, mother Mary, with a nurse in Prahran, June 1904 Monthly Return.  List 54.

AIREY, George Powell, mother Frances Elizabeth, Auburn; in the care of a nurse.  Monthly Return February 1907.  List 34.

AITKEN, Mrs., Prahran, wanted to adopt Olive Myrtle ALLEN, mother in W. Aust and about to be married. Police find the mother is to pay Aitken for doing so, which is not allowed under the Act. 1898.  List 1.

ALSBURY, John M., father James, Fitzroy.  With a nurse, June 1900 Montly Return, List 33.

ALDER, Mrs. Matilda, wrote from Northcote in 1899, advising she has child Robert SMITH, mother is her niece, and asking if he comes under the Act as he is over 2 years old.  4 pages, List 29.

ALDOWS, A. Brighton. Registered as a nurse in 1893, has a child, unnamed; new premises described.  List 1.

ALDUS, Margaret A., Ararat, nurse,  has handed illegitimate child Muriel W. BLACK to her father (named), 2 pages, List 6.

ALDUS, Mrs. Margaret Anderson, Mullock Bank near Ararat, nurse, advises that child Irene May DONELLY (dauther of Eliza) has gone to the Geelong Convent in 1903.  2 pages, List 50.

ALEXANDER, Helen, lady’s nurse, South Yarra, advised in 1906 that she is adopting Alexander Russell BILCOCK, over 2 years old.  5 pages, List 55.

ALEXANDER, Kate, Northcote, wrote in 1904 advising that she looks after the illegitimate child of her niece Kate WILKINS and asks if she needs to register.  3 pages, List 51.

ALLAN, Ida Mary, born 1902, adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Albert MORRIS, Footscray in 1903.  Currently in the care of nurse Janet SHAW; mother gave false address.  6 pages, List 47.

ALLAN, Jane E., nurse, Windsor; has no child at present.  February 1907 Monthly Return, List 34.

ALLANSON, Mrs. Collingwood, has taken in child May Anderson SHIPP in 1901.  4 pages, List 38.

ALLANSON, Mrs. Collingwood, approached by a woman who said she was a South African journalist, married to a Colonel who was killed in the war, and asked to take care of a child called John DREW for a few days in 1902.  This she does but the mother never returns.  3 pages, List 43.

ALLEN, Aileen May, mother Gladys May, Carlton; in the care of a nurse.  Monthly Return, February 1907.  List 34.

ALLEN, Mrs. Charlotte.  A nurse at Bendigo, with six children of her own.  Had child Herbert STANLEY, who died in 1894; failed to report death.  Circumstances reported by Mrs. E.G. McKENZIE , ‘Bona Vista’ View St.  4 pages, List 6.

ALLEN, Emily, nurse, complains about actions of local Sergeant J. PARSONS No. 2378 in taking away her Roll book unnecessarily in 1901; he is reprimanded.  8 pages, List 39.

ALLEN, Marjory, daughter of Amy, transferred from the care of nurse Marion COHEN to Caroline HERBERT of Burnley in 1900 but died shortly afterwards.  8 pages, List 32.

ALLEYNE, Sylvia, wrote from Armadale in 1899, complaining of cruelty to her child by the registered nurse, Mrs. WITHERS of Richmond, because she is behind in her maintenance payments.  Report on case.  7 pages, List 29.

ALLISON, Beatrice, mother Mary, Mulwala NSW; in the care of a nurse.  Monthly Return February 1907.  List 34.

ALLISON, Mrs. David.  Mornington, 1901; is to look after William Henry STANLEY while is mother Jane is ill, she is her sister, List 13.

AMOORE. Mrs. H.M. Ascot Vale, registered as a nurse, 1893. Had a female child, unnamed, which has now been given to Mrs. RADCLIFFE of Flemington, who has applied to be registered.  List 1.

ATKINS, Mary, West Footscray, applies for registration in 1901.  She is the wife of Samuel, a tanner, is illiterate, references on file.  She has adopted Harold FLOOD, son of Blanche of Richmond.  10 pages, List 39.

ATKINS, Rose.  Gave birth to illegitimate child in 1901 in house of Duncan McCALLUM, who is charged.  List 14.

ATKINSON, Louise.  Registered nurse, South Yarra, 1900.  Has illegitimate child James SCOTT, son of Mary of Powong.  Putative father named.  List 3.

BAKER, Edith.  Child of Rosa Baker.  Left with nurse Mrs. Margaret SMITH in 1904; in 1905 she adopts the child and takes her to New Zealand.  T.H. DARE of Auckland complains of their action.  List 16.

BAKER, Minnie, of Camberwell.  Resigns in 1898 as nurse as she can’t afford to keep children, had Nellie STEWART.  Complaint from A.M. DUCKER, visiting committee, Dept. of Neglected Children.  Baker’s circumstances detailed.  11 pages, List 17.

BAKKER, Catherine, Eaglehawk, married, applied for registration as a nurse in 1902; has her deceased sister in law’s child Millie SCHUMAKER.  4 pages, List 43.

BALL, William, and wife, Glen Iris, applied to adopt unnamed child (mother in Ballarat) in 1903, but find that nurse NIGHTINGALE of Coburg will not give the child up, so withdraw.  8 pages, List 49.

BALLARAT & DISTRICT.  This list of names relates to women in Ballarat and suburbs who were registered as Nurses under the Act, and whose homes were inspected by local police between September and November 1899.  The information consists of a name, full address, date of inspection of their house and a Remarks column which gives some information, such as the number of children, if any, in their care.  Many of the remarks say simply ‘all correct’. COTTER, Mrs. Jessie, Carlton, took in Ernest and Ellen, children of Mrs. Ellen NOLAN of Won Won near Yarram in 1902.  As she was unregistered, police prepared prosecution case, but discovered a sordid tale.  Their mother was the stepdaughter of Joseph NOLAN, who forced her to marry him in order to avoid prosecution; he had been living with Ellen’s mother Margaret nee MONCRIEF, and had several children by her.  She was the widow of Thomas S.
