HACKENBERGER alias BERGER, Charles, claims in 1888 he is an escaped French convict from New Caledonia, but French Consul gives real background and states he just wants his fare back paid. 10 pages, List 56.
HACKETT, Mrs. Mary, wrote two letters from Granya in 1904, complaining of the licensee of the Club Hotel, Mrs. M.J. RIELLY (RILEY) who had let her son get into debt through gambling and nearly poisoned her husband. Report is negative on Hackett who disgraced herself while drunk. 11 pages, List 56.
HADDON, Mary Ann nee SMITH; parents Charles Smith and Mary Thistle. Married Hobart c1876 to Thomas Haddon, separated c1881. He subsequently married Annie STOREY in Victoria after having 3 children with her. His parents were Joseph and Caroline nee RUSSELL. List 1.
HADDON, Thomas, 1900 file re his bigamy. First marriage to Mary Ann Matilda SMITH in Tasmania; second to Elizabeth OTICK 1878, she a widow. He left Elizabeth c1882, she rejoined him in Melbourne, but they separated. 16 pages, List 22. Note: this is a different file to that above. CONNECTION FOUND.
HADE, John, Paddington NSW, wrote in 1911 re report of death of James Thomas Hade, asks if this is his brother, who is separated from his wife in Sydney. Police advise a different person. 6 pages, List 98.
HAGAN, Ernest Bernard, groom, 28 years, deserted wife Mary and children at Carlton in 1909. In 1911 he is found living with Mrs ELMER, hotelkeeper, Evandale, Tasmania. 11 pages, List 97.

HAGEN, Joachim F., kept under surveillance by police after being released from gaol, 1891. 5 pages, List 55. Another file re his arrest in 1888 for threatening to shoot William HARPER of Robert Harper & Co; report on his background. 7 pages, List 56.
HAGUE, Mrs A.C., Victoria Park, WA, wrote in 1910 asking if the woman Julianna PRATT, 39 years, who suicided recently in Malvern is Mary Pratt, with whom her husband Lindsay Hague alias Harry LINDSAY absconded c1907. Reply states different person. 7 pages, List 94.

HAINSWORTH, Barbara W., South Melbourne, wrote in 1916 re her husband George Arthur, 36 years, who left for Sheffield England for work, and hasn’t sent maintenance. 5 pages, List 78.
HAIR, Mrs Agnes, Young, NSW, wrote in 1912 re her three grandchildren, John, Leslie and Leo RODGERS; believed they were being illtreated – they were with Mr and Mrs S. Hair, Prahran. 6 pages, List 101.
HAIRE, Rowland Alfred, Adelaide S.A. Solicitors acting for him report 6 year old son Reggie has been kidnapped and taken to Melbourne in 1912. He is found with grandparents MURPHY. 5 pages, List 102.
HALES, William Albert, Bexley NSW, wrote in 1907 re his wife who left him in 1906 and is believed to be with her sister Mrs SELF in Melbourne. 9 pages, List 83.
HALL, Clement George, Deloraine, Tasmania, wrote in 1910 re Edward DIMMACK, carpenter, 51 years, who left there to look for work in Victoria; his family are anxious. Found. 6 pages, List 54.
HALL, Mrs Elizabeth, Toora, wrote in 1913 re her eldest daughter Ruby. James BROOK of Poon Boon Station Swan Hill ‘a thorough scoundrel’ got her pregnant; the 2 year old child is boarded out. Her husband was the late Constable John Hall. The letter is very hard to decipher, and a note states it is not police business. 7 pages, List 109.
HALL, George, inmate of Gordon Insitute in 1907, 16 years, sent out with sheep drover to NSW, ran away and asked Wahgunyah police to help him to get back; is the son of Mr A. Hall, hairdresser, of West Melbourne, 3 pages, List 15.
HALL, Ivy Mary. Mother Mrs J. COOK, Newcastle, sent money for her return from Wodonga in 1914, but she hasn’t arrived. Aunt is Mrs MADDEN, of Rutherglen. 15 pages, List 113.
HALL, John, deserted wife E.P. and child in Parramatta in 1897. He has a brother Charles, a butcher, in Collingwood. Wife asks for help, but he is not found. 8 pages, List 41.
HALL, John, labourer, born Victoria, 49 years in 1910, charged with failure to pay maintenance of his children Ivy May, Claude Patrick and Percy Harold, who are Wards of the State, and were committed at Collingwood. Found in Adelaide, living with a Mrs. DAVIS under assumed name. 20 pages, List 22.
HALL, Kate. Sister Mrs. F. CARRATT of Concord NSW writes in 1902, is concerned about her. Report states picked up in Bendigo slums leading immoral life, was in a Mission Home, but left. 9 pages, List 18.
HALL, Minnie, murdered at Eaglehawk in 1897 by husband Charles J. Originally thought to have drowned herself, but body exhumed and signs of violence found. He had had an affair with Miss Eva SCOTT; Martha ALLCOCK, registered nurse, is asked to take care of her and child, and complains of low payment by police. Large file. List 39.
HALL, Mrs. Walter, Kalgoorlie, wrote in 1915 asking police to personally deliver a letter to her brother W.J. HAYES at Carlton; he is living with a married woman. 7 pages, List 79.
HALLEY, Arthur, deserted wife Adelaide, in Redfern, Sydney, in 1912. His mother lives in Collingwood. Found; will not return to her. 8 pages, List 101.
HALLEY, Frederick, deserted wife Adelaide in NSW. In 1912 Redfern Magistrate writes on her behalf, she is penniless. Traced. 11 pages, List 102.
HALLIDAY, Hugh H., applied in 1879 to be reinstated in the Victoria Police force, 4 pages, List 55.
HALLINAN, John Francis, Sydney NSW, wrote in 1913 for permission to come to Victoria and work with tailor Maurice MYERSON; he had been in gaol there; refused. 7 pages, List 106.
HALLINAN, William, also known as CONROY, died of alcoholism at Royal Mail Hotel in Geelong in 1902. Mrs. May HARVEY of Carlton had lived with him there for awhile; wife in Collingwood informed. 10 pages, List 61.
HALLS, Walter Edward, Mitcham Victoria; in 1910 his wife May Alice nee DYSTER of Adelaide alleged he was a bigamist. He married her in 1883 then Allison Jane RENKIN in 1908. 13 pages, List 91.
HALTON, Mrs. Mary, Zeehan, Tas, complains in 1909 that daughter Katie has left her and is living with one of her brothers in Victoria; wants her returned. Note: letter almost indecipherable. 6 pages, List 55.
HAMBLION, Sarah, Marrickville, wrote in 1913 re her son William; hadn’t heard for some time. Found. 5 pages, List 93.
HAMIL, William. Two letters from sister Mrs LABY in Cork Ireland in 1907 re her failure to receive anything from his estate. William, James and John left Ireland c40 years ago. He died in the care of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Northcote in 1905. His cousin Michael MANGAN is criticized. 6 pages, List 15. CONNECTION FOUND.
HAMILTON, Mr. of firm of Thurling & Hamilton, reported in 1896 that his 10 year old son had left their home in Mercer Rd., Malvern. Asks police help in finding him, but also asks matter to be kept quiet. Child found. 7 pages, List 32.
HAMILTON, Andrew, died at Sunbury in 1895. A cousin, James Hamilton, publican of Yanco Creek NSW was asked to pay his burial expenses, and was another relative William ANDERSON of Romsey. 24 pages, List 28.
HAMILTON, Annie, 49 years, widow with 3 children, died suddenly at Collingwood in 1900. 2 pages, List 50.
HAMILTON, Arthur Edward, arrested in Melbourne in 1912, found insane and sent to asylum. Also used the name GRIMSTON. File covers attempt to get payment from family in Qld. 6 pages, List 101.
HAMILTON, Hannah, deserted by husband Peter M. in 1901. Found. 4 pages, List 62.
HAMILTON, Irene Auguste Douglas, sought by mother E.A. Douglas Hamilton of Hobart Tasmania in 1905. Was working as a housemaid in Melbourne to a Mrs. MARSDEN, but letters returned. Found. 7 pages, List 3.
HAMILTON, James. Information sought by Mrs. J. SNUDDEN of Newtown NSW in 1899. He arrived c1875, was at one time a schoolmaster, now in mining, aged about 56 years, used to be a great athlete. A friend in gaol could be released if he could be found. Police check many by that name but fail to find him. 33 pages, List 43.
HAMILTON, Margaret, born 1913, father William James, Tambo Crossing, not yet vaccinated in 1914. Father explains difficulties. 4 pages, List 114.
HAMMERSLY, H., wrote from Bontherambo Hotel, Boorhaman via Wangaratta in 1896 re the lack of police presence in area. Wangaratta police comment negatively on his character. 5 pages, List 35.
HAMPSON, Louie, 21 years, formerly living in Richmond, sought by mother, in WA, in 1902. Found. 6 pages, List 62,
HAMPTON TEA GARDENS. Licensee Mrs. Alexandrina KRONHUBER. 1906 file re anonymous letters and complaint from WCTU re the running of a dancing saloon etc. She was refused renewal of her license. Constable Scammell defends her; his son worked there for awhile. 19 pages, List 34.
HAMRIN, Louis. Found dead in bed in loding house in Lt. Bourke St. by porter Charles BAKER in 1898. Suicide. A Swede, with no relatives in the colony. List of property found and sold to cover burial costs. 6 pages, List 18.
HAND, Barney, attacked by dog at St. Kilda in 1900; dog shot by police. 3 pages, List 51.
HANDLEY, Rose, Williamstown, wrote in 1907 re her half sister Lena HARRIS, who was in the C/E Mission Home, but has now left there. Found. 4 pages, List 83.
HANDY, John, 23 years, deserted Mary STEWART in Qld in 1900; she gave birth afterwards to his child and in 1901, destitute, asks police to find him. 10 pages, List 52.
HANGAN, H., Rock Vale, Glenburn, wrote in 1916 r his brother Robert, who arrived from Lower Burma in 1915; his wife his written. 6 pages, List 77.
HANLEY, William Henry, c36 years, born Newcastle NSW, sought by sister Mrs. STANNER, Double Bay NSW in 1917; has heard he has enlisted. 7 pages, List 74.
HANNA, Henry C., State School No. 824 South Preston, reported on the ‘miserable dirty state’ of the children of David YOUNG in 1907; children were Violet 13, Annie 12, William 8, Alfred 6 and some younger. The mother had died recently. Very detailed report on situation. 7 pages, List 84.
HANNA, Stella, widow, housemaid at the Beehive Hotel, Richmond, was persuaded by David de JAUX to give him money in 1928 so they could marry and travel to Canada to meet his wealthy father. Instead he absconded with the cash. 15 pages, List 59.
HANNAH, Edward Owen Patrick. Incomplete file re his wife desertion in 1917 and request by wife’s solicitor in 1918 to locate him. 4 pages, List 73.
HANNAH, Robert, accidentally killed at Eastern Arcade in 1894, file includes sketch of scaffolding and verandah. 28 pages, List 24.
HANNAN, A. of Glanville, South Australia, asks police to find son John in 1906; last heard of at Mirboo. Found. 5 pages, List 4.
HANNON, Thomas, deserted wife and 3 children at Kyneton in 1865. Found in Brisbane, and sends money for the family to join him months later, but insufficient. He was born in Glasgow, is 29 years, a labourer. 34 pages, List 35.
HANSEN, Mrs Margaret Ann, Adelaide, wrote in 1910 re daughter Mrs Edith SIMPSON, Carlton, suspected her husband would desert her again. 7 pages, List 98.
HANSON, M.A., Adelaide S.A., wrote in 1910 re the welfare of her daughter Mrs Albert William SIMPSON who has returned to her husband in Melbourne. Found employed by R.A. COLENSO. 10 pages, List 94.
HANSEN, M.A., Port Pirie, S.A., wrote in 1912 asking if the newspaper report of the suicide of Neil Hansen is her husband Peder George Valdmer Hansen, not seen for many years. No. 5 pages, List 102.
HARDBOTTLE, Walter. Wife enquires in 1895 and 1897, incomplete file, her letters not extant. He had brothers at Dollar near Foster. 12 pages, List 20.
HARCOURT, Mrs Bessie, West Melbourne, wrote in 1915 re her husband Cyril, English, 40 yrs, who left in 1914 to find work. Not found. 9 pages, List 115.
HARDING, Robert Fitzmaurice, committed suicide in Melbourne in 1917; a doctor who formerly practised in Qld, captain in militia camp; details of background, burial and relatives in Dublin given. 18 pages, List 72.
HARDY, Inez, Vine Hotel Richmond, wrote in 1900 re her mother Mrs. Hardy, who went as cook to McMeikens at Mannus Station, Tumbarumba near Corryong. 8 pages, List 46.
HARDY, James. Unknown male, c54 years, died Melbourne hospital, 1895, believed to be him. Photo taken after death on file. Believed to have been in Omeo gathering herbs, but unknown there. 8 pages, List 28.
HARGREAVES, Mary. Number of letters form her in 1877, including a copy of a legal account from Everett BARDWELL who evidently acted on her behalf; she is apparently in Kew Lunatic Asylum and her husband is overseas. 8 pages, List 5.
HARLEY, P., Bunbury, Western Australia, wrote in 1904 re Arthur FISHER of Ballarat who fathered a child by an unnamed woman there. Found. 6 pages, List 68.
HARMAN, Henry James, had not returned to Inebriates Home in 1911; found. 3 pages, List 98.
HARPER, Ida, sought her sister Jane in 1910; went to W.A. with a man named McGuire, and supposedly died there in 1906, but she has heard otherwise. Police ascertain she died under another name. 11 pages, List 54.
HARRIS & CO., Elizabeth St., Melbourne. Anonymous complaint in 1906 that they were displaying indecent postcards; 6 on file, report states non indecent. 9 pages including cards, List 82.
HARRIS, A.J., Crossover near Drouin. Claim in 1897 that he ill-treated his sons James and John A. Harris, 15 and 13 years. They had run away and were charged with being neglected. Aunt Mrs. PEARSON confirms their claims. 5 pages, List 39.
HARRIS, Arthur Edwin, 34 years, employed by Alex MAIR & Co., coachbuilders, disappeared from his Footscray home in 1907. Returned. 15 pages, List 89.
HARRIS, Mrs B., Adelaide, wrote in 1913 asking how her mother Mrs Susan KNOPP is; she is in Yarra Bend Asylum. 4 pages, List 107.
HARRIS, Elsie Beatrice, wrote from Adelaide in 1915. Husband Clement Thomas Leslie Harris had told her to go there, they were living in Richmond Victoria, and he was to join her, but hasn’t done so. She is destitute. 13 pages, List 117.
HARRIS, Hannah, widow, Morrisons, gave birth to illegitimate child in 1896; son Herbert went for Mrs. LEWIS to help; child died, no suspicious circumstances. 2 pages, List 30.
HARRIS, Harriet, wife of James and daughter of Margaret WILLIAMS, widow of Richmond, made allegations of a robbery at her home in Quarry Hill in 1891, but this was found to be false. In 1896 her husband sued the railways after being injured in an accident. Crown Solicitor asks background of the couple, and this is supplied. 25 pages, List 37.
HARRIS, James, deserted wife Edith and two children in Sydney in 1911 and came to Melbourne. Found. 5 pages, List 99.
HARRIS, John, storekeeper, Minyip, had his shop burgled and house set on fire in 1899. 9 pages, List 43.
HARRIS, John, Launceston Tasmania, wrote in 1910 re jewellery that went missing while he was staying with relatives BOWBOTTOM at South Melbourne. May Rowbottom subsequently see wearing a piece when with Jack NICHOLSON, labourer, and he and his sister Edith give evidence, but no charge eventuates. 14 pages, List 94.
HARRIS, Josiah, c50 years, died at Falstaff Restaurant Melbourne in 1914; came recently from Tasmania. Brother William identifies the body; report on case. 9 pages, List 113.
HARRIS, Kitty, married woman, 40 years, East Brunswick, took poison and taken to hospital in 1916; is an alcoholic. 3 pages, List 79.
HARRIS, M.S., Buffalo, Hay River, Albany, West Australia, wrote in 1908 re mother Mrs K. LEESON of Garfield Gippsland, alleging mistreatment by siblings Mrs PEARSON and Phillip Leeson. 6 pages, List 86.
HARRISON, Annie, wife of Alfred, two children, renting from Misses Edith and Catherine REID in South Yarra. Took poison in 1914; she’d had several operations recently. No prosecution. 4 pages, List 110.
HARRISON, Doris, 7 yrs, Harold, 5 yrs and Edith, 8 yrs, were sent by the Catholic priest at Queenstown Tasmania to Nazareth House Ballarat. File covers arrangements and family background. 19 pages, List 95.
HARRISON, Florence, Anderson Street, Yarraville; in 1917 reported that a display case she had bought at auction had been removed from an unoccupied shop in Collingwood, but later wrote to say she has found it was taken for unpaid rent. 4 pages, List 119.
HARRISON, Gertrude, Chilwell, Geelong, wrote in 1903 re her husband Herbert William, 34 years, who deserted her in 1900. His father, William Thomas Harrison, is a builder in Elsternwick. He is found interstate, has been injured. 19 pages, List 66.
HARRISON, Hugh, sought by Mrs. J. BUTLER of Goulburn in 1902. She wished him to send money for his child’s medical bills. Not found. 8 pages, List 12.
HARRISON, Leslie Raymond, 18 years, formerly a Ward of the State, claimed he was shot and robbed in Melbourne in 1918, but really the wound was self-inflicted. His stepfather Harvey DARK will take care of him. 6 pages, some damaged. List 113.
HARRISON, Robert. File re attempt to charge him with carnal knowledge of Sarah Louise KENNEDY, 15 years, who had a child to him in 1894. Her parents, Robert and Rose live near Dimboola; all have Aboriginal blood. F.A. Hagenauer of the Aborigines Protection Board wants him prosecuted; her parents oppose any marriage between the two. No prosecution. File covers 1894/5. List 115.
HARRISON, Walter, alias GINGER, alias WALSH. Brisbane police ask if he is know in Victoria, is on trial there for conspiracy. Physical description given, and a letter to his brother Jack SCOTT is on file. Police state he is James W. SCOTT alias Richard Scott, and his brother is in business in Fitzroy. 12 pages, List 29.
HARRISON, William G. Wife Mrs. M. wrote to police in 1904, asking them to trace him. He was formerly assistant town clerk of Port Melbourne, and was believed to have gone to the Cape Colony, leaving her and their 3 children behind. 4 pages, List 14.
HARRY, John Dunstan. Married Ellen WARD nee STANDISH in 1871. Suspected bigamist. List 1.
HART, Albert, left wife in Melbourne c1913; in 1916 she asks police to force him to pay maintenance. Found interstate under name HARDY. List 79.
HART, Emily Maud. A servant, of Kensington, had an illegitimate child, Harry Douglas Hart, in 1898, claimed maintenance from father Alfred ROBERTS, a 22 year old Victorian, but he cleared off interstate and was not caught. She subsequently married William Robert PYLE at Bacchus Marsh; he claims while he was drunk. Complicated case regarding whether she had another child and what she had done with it. 13 pages, List 6.
HART, J. Stephen, Warden, St John’s College St. Kilda. Wrote in 1915 re a house known as LA TOSCA, on corner Alma and Alexander Streets, suspected brothel; he has young men in his care. Report states owner May BRYCE has now vacated. 6 pages, List 117.
HART, L.H., wrote on letterhead of Madame DEMARET, Flinders St., Melbourne in 1895 re plainclothes policeman who enquired for him. Two letters. 5 pages, List 28.
HARTIGAN, Mrs. Elizabeth, Horsham, writes a strange letter to CCP in 1909; local police report husband John’s neglect ‘has caused her to become delusional’. 5 pages, List 53.
HARTLAND, Henry, died in Melbourne Hospital in 1913. Roberts & Allport, solicitors, act for trustees. Two daughters were in fact nieces. 19 pages, List 109.
HARTNETT, Patrick. Information sought by niece Ellen BARBOUR nee HETHERINGTON, of Fremantle W.A. in 1901. Last heard of in Ballarat; found. 6 pages, List 52.
HARVEY, Charles E., found wandering at Gordon in 1891 and committed to asylum. 5 pages, List 51.
HARVEY, Gertrude Mary, 4 years old in 1895, was sexually abused by WON POY HEM, who was gaoled for the offence. File covers correspondence re medical expenses. 16 pages, List 28.
HARWOOD, Frank. Name used by murderer of A.T. PRESTON and possibly Lee WELLER in NSW in 1896. CHAPLIN possibly correct name. Photo on file. List 1.
HASSAN, Thomas, Fitzroy, receives letter from P. NETLEY, boarder of Simpson St East Melbourne in 1895, advising that his daughter Mary Phoebe is very ill and needs help. She died and father finds a 12 month child in the house and an assurance policy in the name of the child, Harold Walter PHILLIPS. Asks police to find father, doubts they were married. Police cannot find him. 21 pages, List 28.
HASTINGS, Charles, boarded at the Bushman’s Home, Spring St., Melbourne, manager Hans VOGER. Taken ill and to hospital by Harry WALMAN where he died, 1900. 3 pages, List 48.
HASTINGS, Herbert Leonard. Born Indianapolis USA in 1878; living in Victoria in 1917/18 and arousing suspicion under the Aliens Act. 17 pages, List 13.
HATELEY, Charles, accidentally killed at Timboon in 1898, sons Williamd and Edward with him at time. Report on incident, no inquest. 5 pages, List 22.
HATTERS, H. Teacher, St. Leonard’s school. Pro German remarks investigated. List 1.
HATTON, Francis. Information sought on him in 1901, had been in Victorian police force, on behalf of Captain SYMONS of the Nile which was then in port. Not found. 11 pages, List 49.
HATTON, Kate, wrote from Nth Sydney in 1905, has heard her husband George James Hatton, jeweller, has died; they have been separated for some years. Confirmed. 6 pages, List 23.
HAUTMONT, Prof. Leo. Someone, probably him, sent poster advertising his ladies French Safety Pills, brochure and postcard to fictitious people at Sutton’s Coffee Palace, Launceston. Local police forward on with request charge him. 10 pages, List 36.
HAWKINS, Albert George, charged with carnal knowledge on Elsie May PAYNTER, 16 years, at Wyuna in 1908; she is his niece by marriage. She subsequently has an abortion at Sefton Hospital, and Drs Charles Edward MARSDEN and Thomas HODGSON and Matron Edith COLLINSON are interviewed and deny it. 40 pages, List 87.
HAWKINS, C.H., Karoonda South Australia, wrote in 1914 that he had sent payment to fortune teller Charles ARION ‘for another year’s reading’ and not received a response. Detailed report on trying to trace and charge Arion. 14 pages. Ernest TATAM, Whakatane, New Zealand, wrote a similar letter. 4 pages. List 113.
HAWKINS, Horace. Of Longwood South Australia. Writes re his brother in law Robert DAVIES who divorced wife in Victoria on grounds of desertion, but had paid her to go to South Africa. Subsequently married wealthy Bertha CAMPBELL, with whom he’d been living in South Australia; writer thinks he is exploiting her. 1906. List 1.
HAWKINS, Joseph Edward, sought by 83 year old mother Ann Phoebe, Perth, in 1915. She’s the mother of 17 children; he’s employed in the railways. 8 pages, List 115.
HAWKINS, Robert Billson, charged with murdering his second wife Martha in 1902. Had an affair and child with her sister Catherine RINALDI and suspected of getting rid of child. Report on various costs etc. Warning: this is a very confronting file. 38 pages, List 61.

HENDERSON, Mrs S.J., Chelsea. Her husband deserted her 17 years ago, she believed him dead but has now been seen by her son, so she asks police to get him to pay maintenance. She is ill, her ‘nerves are all shattered.’ 4 pages, List 103.
HENDERSON, Sarah Jane, deserted by husband James in 1896, and took out a warrant. In 1912 she found out where he was living and asked police to apprehend him, but they were slow to do so. They were married in 1911 at Lockhart NSW; he deserted her in 1915, was arrested and agreed to pay maintenance to her, but she hasn’t received any for over a year. He is c36 years, an engine driver. Believed that he may be living with a Mrs THACKERAY at Parkes. She wrote a second letter from Geelong, asking if the James MARTIN, killed in action, is him, using a different surname. Police check with Martin’s father Edward of Howlong, who confirms that his son was single. 15 pages, List 120.

HESELTINE, S.R. Adelaide Racing Club, wrote in 1915 re his son Dr George Verner Heseltine, who left for the U.S. in 1912 and cabled his brother for money in 1913, but not heard from since. The father discovered that his son married in England in 1897 and deserted his wife there; he has been paying the maintenance; believes his son is at St Paul’s Minnesota with Jessie O’BRIEN. 7 pages, List 80.

HEWITT, Henry David. Deserted wife Mary Ann nee CALLOW in 1887; born Castlemaine, engine driver. She took him to court, but maintenance never paid. In 1898 she writes to police, has heard he is at Walhalla. Police report he is there, married to a Miss VAUX and has 5 children to her. Copy of first marriage certificate on file; Callow was born Launceston Tasmania and 16 when married. Both wives are informed of the bigamous marriage but decline to act. 19 pages, List 21.

HIDGCOCK, Charles, auctioneer, Hay NSW, wrote in 1899. A Sydney paper reported the death of James GORMAN in Melbourne, 35 years. Asks if it is the brother of a friend of his, whose real name was James GORMLY. Police state correct name was O’GORMAN, 45 years, from Limerick, parents in Richmond, and his wife and 2 children were unprovided for. She subsequently went to gaol and the children were placed in care. 11 pages, List 42.

HOOF, Bert. Accidentally drowned in Yarra River. Police find he was the illegitimate child of Eliza Geraldine PICKERING, who was herself the adopted daughter of Mrs. Hoof, who kept the Cumberland Arms Hotel, Sydney Road Brunswick. Bert was born Albert Pickering in 1879, and adopted by Mrs. Hoof. Florence Pickering, sister of Eliza also lived with Mrs. Hoof, but was overseas at the time of Bert’s death.

HOUSE, Joseph, Ireland Street West Melbourne, wrote in 1915 that Mrs DOIDGE, the owner of the neighbouring property Inverness House was running a brothel and sly grog store. Police report states it is the former Inverness Hotel, now a greengrocers, and fail to find any trace of anything illegal. Interviewed, House denies writing the letter, has no problem with his neighbour. 5 pages, List 117.
