OAKLEY, Thomas.  Writes threatening letter to Dr. Louis HENRY of Melbourne, who goes to police.  Has a grievance against his father the late David Henry over a legacy.  8 pages, List 16.

O’BRIEN, Daniel, died in Melbourne hospital in 1911, relatives sought; son John in Marble Bar, daughter Mary WILLIAMS in Melbourne.  Letters from then on file.  Found.  12 pages, List 98.

O’BRIEN, Elizabeth, formerly married to – SKUDDEN and living in Echuca, sought in 1898 by Thomas CLARKE, auctioneer etc., Walgett, NSW.  Found.  5 pages, List 21.

O’BRIEN, Joseph, left Perth for Melbourne in 1915, formerly in police force in W.A.  In 1916 his wife wrote from Stirling St., asking police to find him; she has 2 children to support.  His siblings Arthur, Michael and Mrs. WILLIAMS were in South Melbourne.  Traced.  9 pages, List 77.

O’BRIEN, Mrs. L., Brooklyn Farm Croydon, wrote in 1913; she had been deserted by her husband Hugh Major O’Brien and wanted help with her 3 children.  4  pages, List 93.

O’BRIEN, Laurie, child, of Bridge Road Richmond, found a wallet and money in 1919.  It was handed to police but not claimed, so given to him.  He was to share part of the proceeds with friend Basil CHARLESTON.  7 pages, List 3.

O’BYRNE, Michael Francis, deserted wife Mary and 2 children in South Yarra in 1908; found interstate.  8 pages, List 85.

O’CAIN, James, sought by wife Annie, Cottesloe Beach in 1911.  His mother Bridget was well known in the Wangaratta area.  Not found.  9 pages, List 101.

O’CALLAGHAN, Thomas, former Chief Commissioner of Police.  Sixty page report for the Chief Secretary on overseas policing matters he noticed on his recent travels.  63 pages, List 112.

O’CONNOR, John, sought by brother P.J., Rokewood, Sydney NSW, in 1905, not heard from since 1870, had been in Victoria police years ago, would be c59 years.  Not found.  13 pages, List 64.

O’CONNOR, William George.  Port Melbourne.  Bomb thrown at his house, 1928.  1 page, List 4.

ODBERT, Herbert F., Sydney, agent for the BURNS-JOHNSON MOVING PICTURES in 1909.  Complains that two boys he hired in Ballarat absconded with sale proceeds.  They are identified as Norman McFARLAND, 14 years and John JENKINS, 13 years.  12 pages, List 89.

O’DONAHOO, J. Leo, Goolburra Station Qld., wrote in 1911 to ask if his mother Mrs F.E. O’Donahoo was still living; he left Victoria 20 years ago.  5 pages, List 98.

O’DONNELL, Michael, wrote from Fitzroy in 1906.  He is the eldest son of Sgt. D. of the Detective Force, wants to join police.  He is a trained pen and ink sketcher; is under age.  4 pages, List 26.

O’DONOHUE, James, a patient in Yarra Bend Asylum in 1900, he wrote asking about property left at Walhalla.  He was subsequently discharged and wanted it sent to Port Fairy.  11 pages, List 44.

O’DONOHUE, Michael, c60 years, native of Co. Cavan Ireland.   Information sought by eldest son James in 1895, has heard that he died on the W.A. goldfields; requests that reply be sent to his mother at Yambuk  Mrs. C. O’Donohue interviewed and states that her husband deserted her 24 years ago, that James has recently been released from a lunatic asylum and that he is possibly delusional.  6 pages, List 29.

O’FARRELL, Peter Andrew Charles. Threats to William LANE of St. Kilda, 1886. Further file 1886. Taken to hospital by police 1898, died destitute a few days later; former solicitor who attempted to shoot Archbishop Goold.  List 1.

O’FARRELL, P.A.C.  Discharged from gaol in 1884 and kept under surveillance by police.  Letters from various R/C officials, and an 1863 letter from O’Farrell on file.  A very large file, covering 1884/85.  List 56.

OGLE, Arthur, accidentally killed on railway near Leongatha in 1901; file re burial expenses etc., had sister in Geelong.  10 pages, List 51.

OGLE-MOORE, Mrs H., Middle Brighton, wrote in 1913, asking police to find her brother Hugh MONTGOMERY, a financial agent, who had gone on a bender somewhere in Melbourne; he was an alcoholic and this had happened before.  Police find him in the care of Mrs MURPHY of the Union Hotel, who had known him for many years and he was taken to a private hospital.  10 pages, List 108.

O’GORMAN, Thomas.  Morwell, 1898.  Two letters re joining the police force; rejected on medical reasons.  4 pages, List 7.

O’GRADY, Miss G., A’beckett Street Melbourne,  in 1910 complained about manhandled by police at Parliament House.  Report states pestering MPs about land matters.  10 pages, List 91.

O’GRADY, M., applied in 1879 to be reinstated in Victoria Police force.  1 page, List 55.

O’GRADY, Nurse Mary, South Fremantle, sought John Edward DOYLE, fireman in railways, in 1916.  She has his 18 month old son.  Found to have enlisted under an assumed name; his sister is Mrs. PHILLIPS, Northcote.  7 pages, List 78.

O’GRADY, Thomas Joseph.  His wife Elizabeth writes from Yass in 1906.  They were married in 1895 and have three children.  She has heard that he has married Lenna MACK.  He has a sister Mrs. Ellen MOONEY in Footscray.  9 pages, List 4.

O’HARA, M., shearer,  Nyang Station, Moulamein, NSW, wrote in 1907.  His wife and family have been turned out of a house in Carlton by Mrs. KELLETT, who has kept their furniture; asks police help in getting it back.  5 pages, List 84.

O’HARE, James, 69 years, husband of Ann, arrested for being drunk and disorderly, took poison and died in Melbourne police cell, 1906.  Report on case.  13 pages, List 34.

O’HARE, Mary, wrote a very strange letter to the Chief Commissioner from Rich Avon in 1918.  Donald police report on her mental state, and her background is given.  Her family were at Frewville, Adelaide.  Her brother J.T. is found.  9 pages, List 119.

OHEBERG, Erick William.  Information sought by wife at Somerville in 1901, he was 38 years, a Swede, a traveller for a nursery, and not heard from for a year.  Faded photo of him with a bike is on file.  2 pages, List 52.

O’KANE, Mrs.  Wrote from Sydney in 1910 re her husband Richard, timber worker, 46 years, has brothers Harry and Bernard; he has deserted her.  15 pages, List 24.

O’KEEFE, Daniel, wrote from Rowsley in 1900.  He was a candidate for the force, and asked if he needed to transfer a lease of land at Glenmore Station before being admitted.  1 page, List 44.

O’KEEFE, Thomas William, return soldier No 6587, 9th Battalion, Qld., went missing from his ship on way back from England in 1918; found drowned.  Small photo on file.  2 pages, List 74.

OLD, Ernest, Dingee, 1902, applies to join force, fought in South Africa, is a racing cyclist.  2 pages, List 12.

OLD MELBOURNE CEMETERY PRESERVATION LEAGUE.  Secretary A.H. PADLEY wrote in 1918 asking details of a fire which destroyed the lodge and records in 1865; no trace found.  12 pages, List 76.

O’LEARY, Mrs. Catherine, wrote strange letter to police from Yabba Yabba near Dookie in 1900; locals give her a bad character.  8 pages, List 46.

O’LEARY, Daniel, wrote from Donald in 1896 re alleged rape of girl PARKER by William MORGAN, son of her employer.  Mrs. Morgan is proprietor of the Donald Times and he claims local police are friendly with her.  Detailed report on situation includes statement that Morgan horsewhipped O’Leary, who owns a rival newspaper.  9 pages List 35.

OLERHEAD, E.M., wrote from Salisbury West via Inglewood in 1896; re Angus K. STOCKTON.  Refers to previous letter which is not on file.  Writes of maintenance of an illegitimate child.  Not found.  8 pages, List 37.

OLFE, M.  Wrote from Adelaide in 1888 re her husband J.D.M., a watchmaker.  Police report states that she is really only trying to confirm his death and he has attempted suicide several times.  3 pages, List 5.

OLIPHANT, Arthur, East Melbourne.  Private enquiry sought by Admiral Sir Harry RAWSON, Government House Sydney, in 1903; he had applied for employment there, as he knew his father in China many years ago.  Detailed report given ‘had been wild and extravagant’ in his youth.  8 pages, List 67.

OLIPHANT, Daisy, 15 year old daughter of James and Elizabeth, gave birth to a female child in Brunswick in 1915.  Claimed Arthur Percy FREEMAN was the father, which he denied.  Detailed report includes interviews with her sisters Ethel Heather and Amy Evelyn, friend Nellie ALEXANDER and John Ernest COOPER. Freeman was married and went to Sydney afterwards.  Decision made not to charge him with carnal knowledge as insufficient evidence.  19 pages, List 117.

OLIVER, Mrs. nee BROCKHOUSE, living with father in Preston after her husband Samuel, 32 years, iron moulder, left her and their 3 children and went to Queensland.  Asks police to find him.  8 pages, List 36.

OLIVER, George, 70 years, died suddenly at George Hotel Williamstown; sister was Sarah Gibbs Oliver. Child Bessie FAIRFOUL found him; licensee is Jennie GORDON. 4 pages, List 51.

OLIVER, Grace, 15 years, Camberwell, went with friend Linda LEE, Hawthorn,  on train to Carrum for a picnic in 1915, and claimed sexually assaulted by local constable, but William John NEWSOME appears to have been the offender.  Her testimony unreliable, so no prosecution.  Warning:  this is a large and confronting file.  List 80.

OLIVER, Rosemary, East Prahran, 21 years, attempted suicide in 1910, found by 11 year old sister Doris.  No prosecution.  7 pages, List 96.

OLIVER, Thomas, Naval Base Crib Point, left daughter with Mrs. McINTEE of Launceston Tasmania and in 1916 she complained that he had failed to send maintenance; child’s mother is dead.  4 pages, List 78.

O’LOUGHLIN, MIchael, 21 years, sought by wife K., Windsor in 1918; he had not paid maintenance for their child.  Found.  8 pages, List 120.

O’LOUGHLIN, P.P., Bute House West Melbourne, complained about the residents of 28 Fitzroy Street Fitzroy in 1918, alleging it was a brothel.  His 15 year old son had run away and stayed there.  Report clears the married couple of the accusation. 3 pages, List 119.

O’MAHONY, Edward.  Wrote from O’Mahony’s Creek, Lardner in 1894, complaining of the treatment he received by a local constable.  Comment on his character.  17 pages, List 13.

O’MALLY, Charles.  Wife Doris reports him missing from his home at McKinnon in 1928.  He was a signalman, 46 years.  Small damaged photo on file.  List 61.

O’NEILL, Charles E., clerk, c27 years, wanted for embezzlement in 1913.  Signed photo on file.  2 pages, List 107.

O’NEILL, John, died in Melbourne hospital in 1894, 35 years old, not known to people, so photograph taken.  Family in Rushcutters Bay NSW identify the photo as being the son of Patrick and Julia nee Holloway, born at Sydney, and give history.  Letters re his being given a proper burial.  25 pages plus faded copy of the photo.  List 41.

O’NEILL, John, bootmaker, 17 years, and George LAYTON, hired a jinker and horse from COFFEY BROS. of Richmond and took it to Shepparton where they abandoned it after trying to sell it.  Charged with larceny.  Witness James TALLANT, Coffey employee.  8 pages, List 27.

ONIMUS, Marcelle, whereabouts sought by French Consul in 1914; 24 years.  Found.  3 pages, List 114.

ONSLOW, Daisy Bell, child of Adelaide Louisa, committed to Industrial School in 1900 after being found to be neglected.  File re conveyance there from Yackandandah.  12 pages, List 47.

OPIUM DENS.  Report on 3, in and off Lt. Bourke St., Melbourne in 1895.  ‘Male Europeans who smoke are of the fairly respectable or working class … the women are nearly all prostitutes, but while here they are invariably sober and noting to complain of … Opium Dens are visited by smokers for one purpose, of having a quick smoke only … not used for immoral purpose.’  List 31.

O’REILLY, Bessie & James. Charged with murder of child Elizabeth at Ballarat in 1901.  Body exhumed, acquitted after court case. Large file.  List 1.

O’REILLY, Elizabeth, sought by sister Mary Ann SAVAGE, Cloncurry Qld in 1917.  Their brother Joseph O’REILLY had died and left her a bequest.  She was in the Presentation Convent St. Kilda in 1886.  Not found.  21 pages, List 74.

O’REILLY, Isabel, 14 years, sent from Perth to Melbourne by her stepmother Bell ANDREWS in 1912.  Andrews subsequently wrote to police that she had received a letter from Isabel, alleging ill-treatment on the part of her sister Mrs. HALL.  Another sister Mrs. SAUNDERS named on file.  Detailed report shows that Isabel had been taken from a convent by Andrews 5 years previously and looked after.  8 pages, List 33.

O’RORKE, L.M.  Wrote from Carlton in 1907, applying to join C.I.D.  Formerly a detective in the Johannesburg Town Police, but retrenched, previously in Thorneycroft’s Mounted Infantry.  Married, 30 years.  4 pages, List 22.

O’ROURKE, Mrs Ellen, Park Street Melbourne; took poison in 1908, recovered.  7 pages, List 85.

O’ROURKE, Patrick, gardener. Two large files re his death in hospital in 1906. Annie BROGAN involved, letters to her on file.  List 1.

ORR, Sidney Byron, deserted wife Agnes in Sydney c1905.  In 1907 she wrote seeking him; believed in Melbourne with another woman.  Found.  13 pages, List 83.

ORR, Dr William Francis, failed to have his child Robert Graham vaccinated in 1903.  24 pages, List 117.

ORTON, Henry, 23 years, rescued from drowning in Port Melbourne lagoon in 1906; police assisted by Ralph MEDINA.  4 pages, List 71.

OSBALDESTON, Francis, ‘sailmaker on board the Livington on the articles Francis Graham’ writes re a ‘great wrong’ in 1899.  He can transmit his thoughts over long distances and receive same from others, but some have been sending foul and childish thoughts, and he blames the Prince of Wales.  He has also written to Scotland Yard about it.  2 pages, List 19.

OSBORN, Joseph, Bendigo, jeweller.  Wife Alswitha wrote from Fitzroy, in 1895 alleging his involvement with various criminal activities.  He writes that she has deserted him and their children, is mentally unwell; police agree.  13 pages, List 25.

OSBORNE, Henry James.  Sought by Mary, whom he married at Tamworth in 1896 and left shortly after.  She has found he has another wife, Isabella.  Not found.  14 pages, List 20.

O’SHANASSY, Michael, Benalla, in 1909 asked proof of age to be supplied.  States he joined police force c1857 as a boy; brother Peter is stationed at Cunninghame.  2 pages, List 91.

O’SHANNASY, W.V., storekeeper, Antwerp, wrote in 1903 re closing down  wine store of A. KLINZE, a German.  He was selling alcohol to the Aborigines who were at the [Ebenezer] Mission Station and working at the eucalyptus factory of Major McCALLUM.  His father was formerly in the force.  7 pages, List 117.

O’SHEA, Thomas Edward, Newport, threatened and shot in 1917, wife suspected.  He will not identify assailant, so no charge is laid.  His brother is Francis Henry O’Shea.  19 pages, List 71.

O’SHEA, Timothy.  Suicided at Kerang in 1906.  Father at Wagga Wagga seeks details; letter from brother Michael on file.  18 pages, List 3.

OSTON, Charles August, boot maker, sought by sister Mrs. O.A. BUCKWELL of Sydney in 1917.  Found.  11 pages, List 70.  

O’SULLIVAN, K., wrote from Bright in 1904, asking details of her husband Cornelius William, who left two years ago, and was last head of at Walhalla. He was living with a half caste Chinese in Fitzroy under the name of RYAN and had a child there.  Was about 35 years of age.  Not found.  4 pages, List 33.

OTTENSON/OTENSON, Michael.  Information sought by Imperial Russian Consul, Melbourne, in 1895.  Last heard of at Drysdale.  Found.  5 pages, List 30.

OTWAY, Benjamin.  His wife writes from Creswick to Scotland Yard, thinks he may have committed bigamy in England.  They reveal he is a suspect in a murder there in 1897, is found to be a habitual criminal, with an alias of Joseph THOMBLIN.  Has a brother Charles.  File covers 1897-1904.  40 pages, 2 almost illegible, including sketches of him.  List 10.

OUSLEY, May, Richmond, attempted suicide in 1911 at the home of her sister Mary REYNOLDS.  8 pages, List 98.

OUTRIM, Reginald, Florence Ave, Kew, discovered abandoned female infant on verandah in 1918.  Investigation into single women who recently gave birth is made, and various women and children interviewed, including Emma Mary PURCELL, 17, who states that the father of her child is returned soldier Charles OWEN.  The infant is handed to a nurse and given the name of Florence CLOVELLY.  22 pages, List 73.

OVENDEN, W.H., watchmaker, Northam, W.A., left wife in Victoria c1896 and in 1906 asks, via solicitor Henry SPRY, for her to join him.  She states he is a drunkard.  6 pages, List 71.

OVERINGTON, Eliza, went from Moyston near Ararat to Perth WA c1910.  Mother M., wrote in 1912 as she hadn’t heard from her for months.  Found.  12 pages, List 102.

OWEN, Ethel, real name Theodora Beatrice MELLIDAY, died at Fitzroy in 1915 after illegal abortion.  Parents lived in Lavender Bay NSW, and were asked to take her 3 year old child Frank Owen, but refused.  She worked at Parer’s Crystal Cafe, and fellow employees pay funeral expenses.  Letter from close friend Florence Owen, Hobart, on file; a tragic tale.  31 pages, List 80.

OXENHAM, William.  Daughter Gertrude writes from Paddington Sydney in 1898, asking for discreet enquiry whether he is still alive; mother is still paying his insurance.  Second letter states he has written, no need for search.  2 pages, List 22.

OYSTON, Anthony, sought by daughter Nettie, now Mrs E. BARRY, Adelaide, in 1914.  He was last heard of 10 years ago in Melbourne, before that they lived in Brighton.  4 pages, List 112.

PACKER, Robert, Warwick, Qld, wrote in 1913.  He has a Qld driver’s licence, is coming to Melbourne and seeks details of licence requirements.  3 pages, List 106.

PACKHAM, Ruby, 15 years, ran away from parents at Waterloo in 1906; found at Ballarat with – WATSON.  3 pages, List 71.

PACKWOOD, Ada Margaret, sought by Thomas Samuel Packwood, Fortitude Valley, Qld, in 1916.  Found.  6 pages, List 78.

PAGE, Gladys. Writes from Brisbane in 1920. She is 19 years old and pregnant to Captain Edward MacMILLAN of the Commonwealth government line of steamers; seeks police help in finding him.  List 1.

PAGE, Mrs. Mary, West Melbourne, deserted by husband Henry in 1903, leaving her and three children destitute and starving.  Report on case.  11 pages, List 67.

PAGE, Phillip John, 38 years, deserted wife Frances Bertha and children at Warracknabeal in 1915; they are placed in orphanage. 12 pages, List 81.

PAGE, Thomas.  Wife Annie writes from Adelaide, hasn’t heard from him for 9 mths; he is a railway carpenter, 42 yrs, born Gloucester England.  6 pages, List 5.

PAICE, James Henry, deserted wife Martha and two children at Richmond c1906 and went to Sydney with Linda Louisa SUTHERLAND, by whom he had a child.  In 1910 Martha asked for help as she was ill and a warrant was issued.  Mary SOMERS of Sydney let police know his whereabouts; he was using another name.  This is a very complicated file; children are given as James Vincent, Dulcie and Roy.  23 pages, List 102.

PALM, Elizabeth, wife of Maurice, dentist, wrote from Perth in 1912 regarding her mother Elizabeth Ellen McLAREN, living in South Melbourne, who needed to go into care somewhere.  She was from Edinburgh Scotland and had no other family here.  25 pages, List 32.

PALMER, Mrs Bessie, has been in private asylum at Caulfield, but in 1912 relatives won’t pay any more, so has to be transferred to a Government asylum.  3 pages, List 103.

PALMER, Charles Henry, chef, Woollahra, Sydney, reported in 1917 that the anarchist Peter the Painter or PIATKOW, wanted in England for Hounditch murder in 1909 was working as a chef locally under the name of Paul HUBERT/Paul Jerome Hubert de BEAUDOUIN.  File covers history of offender and belief that they were different people.  34 pages, List 73.

PALMER, Harry, born Portsmouth England.  Sought in 1908 by A. ROYLE of Qld who had been asked by Palmer’s sister Lizzie to help find him.  Harry was last heard of 20 years before, then had a hotel in Sandhurst.  Police find he had died, but locate his widow and son.  9 pages, List 10.

PALMER, Lindsay Clarence and Clarence Roy CAULFIELD, jockey, both of Carlton, travelled to Watchem and broke into shop of  WARNE & GREEN in 1928.  Arrested, tried and gaoled.  Files includes two letters from Palmer and one from his mother, copy of evidence etc.  Large file, List 59.

PALMER, Mary Ann, 22 years, single, domestic servant, father John; attempted suicide in 1912 at Fitzroy.  She believed she was pregnant to Ted O’Shannon, a photographer.  6 pages, List 104.

PALMER, Robert, sought in 1908 by his nephew Frederick W., (son of William Henry) Lithgow NSW, who had recently arrived.  Robert was from Devonshire England, a boot maker and believed to be in Hamilton. Not found.  5 pages, List 85.

PALMER, W.T., ironmonger, Ferguson St. Williamstown.  Two coloured letterheads on file relating to purchases by local police, along with illustration of stoves by R. DURRANT.  2 pages and 1 page, List 40.

PANCK, Frank, sought in 1912 by daughter Regina via William SHAW, Redfern NSW.  German, engineer, not found. 11 pages, List 103.

PANKHURST, Adele. Anti conscription brochure on file, report on her speech.  List 1.

PANTON, Joseph John, sought by Mrs. Hilda CUNNINHAM, Redfern, in 1916.  Her husband Thomas Alexander has deserted her; Panton was a friend of his.  Found.  9 pages, List 80.

PARAVICINI, Andrew, charged with indecent assault on 7 year old Lucy May McALLISTER at Barry’s Reef in 1897.  Warning: This large file has graphic details.  List 65.

PARFETT, Sophy. McKenzie Creek via Horsham, wrote in 1910 re Henry HAMILTON, the father of her child Mary, who had absconded, and was believed in Queensland.  8 pages, List 94.

PARKER, Arthur Frederick, deserted wife May in Footscray after 1913 and enlisted in Tasmania under the name of ELLIS; discharged 1917. She has heard that he married Bessie STEWART in Hobart.  Incomplete file, 3 pages, List 70.

PARKER, Jennie, 17 years old, wrote in 1903 asking police to find her mother.  She is the daughter of William and Mary nee BRANAGAN, and ‘was stolen from my home by my father’ c15 years ago.  She has siblings William and Samuel, and her mother was the daughter of Daniel of Scotland.  Not found.  7 pages, List 65.

PARKER, Robert R.B., arrested at Government House in 1903 and committed to an asylum.  Detailed report on circumstances.  14 pages, List 66.

PARKHURST, Mrs Gertrude, Lefroy, Tasmania, wrote in 1910 re sister Mrs Joseph COLE, whose husband has deserted her and their 2 children.  Found.  7 pages, List 96.

PARSONS, James.  In 1899 an unknown male was found dead at Talbot.  Letters found on the body refer to a sister at Abbotsford.  W.O. STACEY, his brother in law arrives to identify body, but it has already been interred.  From description he confirms identity, but problems arise in trying to get death certificate amended.  Detailed background of Parsons given.  29 pages, List 16.

PATERSON, George Beal, Newcastle NSW wrote in 1915 re Ivy WALDRON of Raywood.  They had married after only knowing each other a short time, and she had left shortly afterward, taking some of his money.  Interviewed, she gives a different version of events.  10 pages, List 54.

PATTERSON, Alexander.  Victorian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children reports that he has illtreated a child named Bertie RICKETTS at Mornington in 1898.  Police report.  5 pages, List 3.

PATTERSON, David. Complains in 1919 that the woman he married in 1917, Agnes McWHINNIE, committed bigamy as her first husband was still alive when they married. Two marriage certificates on file, one with Patterson, the other with Albert Edwin SHEPPERD. Patterson described as ‘eccentric’. 16 pages. List 1.

PELZER, Margaret, attempted suicide by jumping into Yarra river in 1910; rescued by Ernest HOLDEN, John GRIERSON, Thomas TERRY and Robert CROFT, all of Richmond.  No prosecution.  7 pages, List 93.

PENCO, Francesco.  Italian Consul in Melbourne writes on his behalf; he is working at Yarraville and has been threatened by his workmates.  6 pages, some very faint as ink has faded, List 5.

PENNEY, Mrs. James A., wrote from Queenbeyan NSW in 1906 re relative Daniel McCAULEY, carpenter,w ho had not answered her letters; is her only living relative in Australia on her father’s side.  Found.  3 pages, List 27.

PENTLAND, Muriel, Brunswick, 17 years, attempted suicide in 1912; did not get on with stepmother Catherine.  No prosecution.  9 pages, list 102.

PENTRIDGE GOVERNOR.  Unsuccessful attempt by police in 1894 to identify printer of scandalous verse being circulated about the governor, J? BULL.  Copy of the poem on the file.  5 pages, List 3.

PEPPER, Elizabeth, alleges husband John tried to poison her in Fremantle WA in 1895; hands sample of tea to government chemist and it is found to contain arsenic.  Now living with mother Lydia KNIGHTS (taken name of de-facto) in Richmond Vic.  W.A. police send a detailed report, including that she was pregnant to another man when she joined her husband in WA, that a Deed of Separation had been drawn up and that her claims were false according to near neighbours.  25 pages, List 27.

PEPPER, James, Constable.  Died in 1869 leaving a wife and 2 sons.  In 1911 his sister Mrs A. McLEAN, NSW, wrote to police seeking his location, unaware he had died.  File includes his 1856 references and family detail.  His daughter Mrs Ketu DONNELLY traced.  13 pages, List 97.

PEPPER, John.  Wife Elizabeth wrote from Charlton in 1895, asking police to help get him to pay maintenance.  He was in Fremantle.  Her baby had died, she is living with her parents KNIGHTS.  Medical bills on file, also death certificate of Lydia Pepper, 3 months.  Police report less than flattering.  The family had been in Melbourne; her mother Lydia Knights nee SHARP ran a brothel in Charlton and a man named CLARK has been paying maintenance on the child; false information has been supplied on the death certificate.  Clark’s mother Mrs. BANNON received a letter demanding money, even though the child had died.  Pepper sends money.  37 pages, List 28.

PERCEVAL, Dr. Montague W.C.  Information sought by wife Jane, c/- Rev. E. HIGGINS, Koroit in 1905; hasn’t sent maintenance since 1903.  He is a grandson of the Hon Spencer Perceval, formerly British Prime Minister and his brother will be the Earl of Egmont, and has been living with a Mrs. PORTEOUS.  She is a sister of Col. TEMPLETON.  Scotland Yard report that he has recently married there.  15 pages, List 65.

PERCIVAL, [PERCEVAL?] Mrs, Hawthorn, widow of a barrister, has two sons.  Police receive anonymous letter in 1901 re a girl she has adopted.  She explains circumstances; child is 9 year old Mary KEELY from Hay, NSW, and she had been abandoned by her father.  Her mother had two illegitimate children by another man.  5 pages, List 49.

PERRY, Anne, charwoman, residing with her father in Richmond, wrote strange letters to solicitors in 1918.  They refer them to the police who provide a detailed report.  She believes her former employer George HOLLANDS, Tongio near Orbost, owes her money.  11 pages, List 119.

PETERS, R.A., Corinella, Western Port, asks when he will be called into police force, is on waiting list.  1 page, List 20.

PETERSON, Mrs. A.E., St. Kilda, asked police in 1915 to confirm that the marriage of her grandson Private L.J. [Lionel Joseph] Peterson to V. LEECH was legal; he was underage.  He was killed in action and a woman claiming to be his wife has visited her.  7 pages, List 81.

PETERSON, Franklin G.R., 20 years, son of Professor at Melbourne University, reported in 1912 that he had been assaulted in the University grounds late at night.  Later admits that the assault was in the city; didn’t want his parents to know he had been drinking.  9 pages, List 103.

PFEFFER, Joseph Victor, murdered his sister in law Florence WHITELY in 1911.  Police report on murder and arrest.  6 pages, List 100.

PHALP, William Thompson, Constable 5742, died of influenza in 1919.  A file re administration of his estate; father Joseph Anderson Phalp.  31 pages, List 111.

PHELPS, Rose and Herbert, Birchip.  Copy of 1914 newspaper article about the breakdown of their relationship and details of her activities in Melbourne. PHILLIPS, Charles Gordon Walton.  Investigation into his personal life in 1912, after first wife reports him for bigamy.  He married Jane LUXON in Strathalbyn South Aust., in 1876 and they had 2 children.  He hadn’t been seen since 1902, but his son subsequently found him living with another woman, May Hilda HUXLEY, by whom he also has two children.  This marriage certificate is on the file.  No prosecution.  23 pages, List 101.

PHILLIPS, Thomas, sentenced to 3 months gaol at Blackwood in 1865 for assaulting his wife.  Memorial asking for early release, is a small farmer and he will be ruined if he can’t plant his crop.  Signs with an X.  2 pages, List 34.

PHILLIPS, William ‘Boxer’ taken to hospital in 1900 after being found drunk in the street and delusional, but died there.  2 pages, List 47.

PHILLIPS, William, deserted wife Catherine at Ulverstone Tasmania c1895.  In 1904 a Victorian constable reported that he had married again and was living at Maffra.  Established that no warrant was ever issued for the desertion.  5 pages, List 56.

POPPENS, William, licensee of the Melbourne Hotel, Bourke St. objects in 1900 to being charged with trading after hours.  Police report that Fanny HOSKINS, who lived in a nearby wine shop, was seen leaving his premises with bottles, and others found on premises.  4 pages, List 44.

POTTER, Daniel. Wife writes from Parramatta NSW in 1883, he deserted her in 1875; had been in NSW police force.  List 1.

POTTICARY, Mary.  Sydney solicitor writes in 1895 on behalf of her husband Richard who is concerned he hasn’t heard from her.  She kept an umbrella repair shop in Bendigo, and her maiden name was SHADWELL.  Found.  16 pages, List 29

POTTICARY, Richard, writes from Sydney in 1897 re wife Mary, last heard from in Eaglehawk.  Found, she refuses to have anything to do with him; he left her 3 year ago.  7 pages, List 25.

POTTS, Edward, went missing from Gannawarra in 1914.  Father in law R. HETHERINGTON asks police to trace him.  Very detailed report on domestic situation. 8 pages, List 113.

POULTENEY, Zephaniah.  Alfred MAYNE reports to Melbourne police in 1908 that Poulteney, recently released from a lunatic asylum, had threatened to follow his wife to Tasmania and shoot her.  Tasmanian police alerted and find that the wife is staying with her stepfather, MEREDITH at Oyster Cove, but had met with him in Hobart where his mother lived.  12 pages, List 10.

POULSEN, John, accidentally burnt at Fountainbleau near Rushworth in 1908; taken to hospital he died there.  He was a native of Svendborg, Denmark, 69 years, arrived 1860.  File covers report of accident, details of difficulty in getting him to hospital etc., and has invoice from A.S. DARBY, hotelkeeper.  15 pages, List 85.

POULTON, Alfred, of Korumburra, committed to gaol in 1904 for failure to pay maintenance on children Beatrice May, Edith Jane and Frederick FIRTH, whose mother had died.  Also had a child by Mrs. Honora TILBY.  10 pages, List 10.

POUND, Edwin James, sexton of Runnymede Cemetery, writes in 1910 re account of Wilhelm HAGEDORN who dug grave of old-age pensioner William BRANKSON.  3 pages, List 24.

POWELL, Mrs F.A., Colac, reported to be acting strangely by Salvation Army Ensign Ruby BAKER in 1913.  Local police report she was before the court some years ago as a lunatic, and discharged on medical advice.  She lives at Barongarok with an eleven year old boy.  Quite detailed case file.  22 pages, List 107.

POWELL, Giles, applied in 1879 to be reinstated in Victoria Police force; refused.  5 pages, List 55.

POWER, Henry/Harry. 1870 file re trial. 1887 complaint from his sister Mrs. SLATER of Oakleigh, that local constable is bringing people to see him – he is living with her.  List 1.

POWER, Patrick Joseph, sought by wife Catherine, nee MITCHELL,  Glebe, Sydney, in 1915.  They were married in Melbourne in1908; he was a divorced man then. She wants maintenance for their child.  14 pages, List 117.

POWER, William.  Printed statement setting out his request to be reinstated in the Victoria Police Force in 1877; joined 1854.  8 pages, List 55.

PRAHRAN, 244 Chapel Street, small fire there in 1900, occupied by Wilhelmina KRIMPOTICA as a restaurant.  2 pages, List 50.

PRANDONI, Jack.  Applied for employment with MLC Assurance Co., in 1912, citing police as reference.  They report he was briefly a revenue agent with sly grog selling cases, but is unsuitable for employment.  He was born in northern Italy.  5 pages, List 32.

PRATT, A., Redfern, reports in 1910 that 18 year old daughter Grace has run away with Wally BLACKWELL, believed in Melbourne.  Not found. 6 pages, List 93.

PRATTEN, Harriet, died at Beechworth in 1906.  Matthew ENGLISH of Foster wrote claiming to be her son.  8 pages, List 82.

PREECE, Joseph, tailor, Auburn, fined for failure to vaccinate daughter Maud in 1900. 20 pages, List 51.

PRENDERGAST, Therese, 19 years, very easily led astray, left home in Sydney in 1898; sought by sister Mary McLEOD of Auburn.  Not found.  14 pages, List 23.

PRENTICE, Mrs. J.E., wrote from South Melbourne in 1898, on black bordered paper.  Her husband had just renewed his car registration and licence when he died; seeks a refund of money.  Refused.  2 pages, List 22.

PRENTICE, William Edward. Lodges complaint in 1918 about his treatment by police. He is a returned soldier. Report states he went to the South African War, was associated with the Whitton episode [Breaker Morant], and sentenced to death. Detail of his criminal activities. 11 pages.  List 1.

PRESTON, Mrs. Hannah, wrote from Hindmarsh South Australia in 1898, is a ‘brokenhearted wife, mother and sister’.  Looking for sister Ellen GWYNNE, who came from the UK c13 years ago, and was last heard of in 1893, using mother’s maiden name of HARDINGHAM.  Hannah is the mother of 15, 7 of which are alive.  Mentions daughter Maude Elizabeth who married John Henry WHITE, but ‘does not bear a good name in Society.’  Is critical of her own husband ‘a human beast more than a man’.  23 pages, List 17.

PRESTON, Walter Charles, born New Zealand 1905, son of James George.  In 1928 came to Australia and used the name Walter KIMBER to compete in professional running events, winning quite a lot of money.  Officials suspicious so police investigation followed.  Photo of him in running gear on file.  43 pages, List 59.

PRICE, Jane and brother Arthur, accidentally killed in Beech Forest in 1896.  Two page report.  List 37.

PRICE, Mary, accidentally poisoned in 1913; husband Henry, jeweller, Fitzroy.  6 pages, List 106.

PRICE, Thomas, died in 1893 at Southern Cross Hospital ,Western Australia of consumption.  Lillie McILWRAIN wrote from Clydebank Sale in 1895 on behalf of his sister Elizabeth, her employee, who has heard that he has died and left some assets.  8 pages, List 25.

PRICKETT, Emily, Brunswick, married, 35 years, attempted suicide in 1911.  No prosecution.  4 pages, List 99.

PRIEST, Charles E., sought by wife Mary, Bendigo,  in 1919; he owed maintenance.  Found interstate.  16 pages, List 111.

PRINCE, Albert, South Melbourne, reported bicycle stolen in 1914; letter from him on file.  5 pages, List 112.

PRINCESS THEATRE, Melbourne.  Very large file, c200 pages, covering 1890-1898 re overcrowding, cases taken to court and results.  List 115.

PRITCHARD, Charles, boat builder, Leichardt NSW, wrote in 1903 re his wife Fanny Ann, 55 years who had left him with Leslie SOUTHWELL, 23 years, his apprentice and gone to Melbourne.  They had been married for 40 years; heartfelt letter from him.  He seeks police help to get her to return.  An interesting file.  7 pages, List 66.

PROPISH, Lucy, Horsham, wrote in 1917 seeking confidential advice on how to deal with a local male.  1 page, List 74.

PROUDE, Frederick Brannen, born Tramora, Co Waterford Ireland; nearly blind in 1913 and given help to get to hospital.  3 pages, List 105.

PRUDE, Lucy, 38 years, attempted suicide at Richmond in 1912; son in law Lewis WHITE took her to hospital.  Report on, and decision not to charge her.  6 pages, List 32.

PRUEN, Mrs. L.M., wrote from Bathurst NSW in 1896 re her husband Edward Jenner Pruen.  She believed he was keeping a hotel or bar in Melbourne; was a singer and comedian on the stage, and owed her maintenance.  Not found.  15 pages, some damaged.  List 29.

PURCELL/PURSELL, William. His mother, who lives at Bendigo, has not heard from him for about two years, and asks police to check if a murdered man at Nowra in NSW is her son, as he was last heard from there. He was a blacksmith. Police find him alive. 7 pages, List 2.

PURDIE, John, cut wife Annie’s throat with a razor at Ballarat in 1891, in front of adopted children Rose and Robert.  Arrested, he died in gaol.  Detailed report on incident and care of children.  8 pages, List 51.

PURSE, Clara.  Mother, Mrs. John NICHOLL of Carlton, writes in 1894, stating that Clara, 13 years, had left Seymour some months before with Charles BOND and his family, and he refused to return her.  7 pages, List 13.

PURTLE, Patrick, died suddenly in Red Lion Hotel, Melbourne, in 1900, c45 years.  He was blind and lived there out of charity of licensee Alex. CATHCART.  His sister was Mrs. Mary LEONARD of Netherby and he had a brother in NSW.  5 pages, List 49.

PYSING, George.  Incomplete file re him being arrested at Perth and extradited to Melbourne in 1898.  5 pages and photo, List 7.  

PYWELL, Henry Claude.  Telegram from W.A. in 1897 refers to Police Gazette entry and reports he is in Fremantle, was arrest desired.  Father in law Thomas BOOKLESS of Drouin refuses to pay costs, so case dropped.  6 pages, List 39.

QUAST, E., Trungley Hall via Temora NSW, wrote in 1911.  He had ordered an artificial leg from R. SIMPSON & Sons and it hadn’t arrived.  5 pages, List 97.

QUICK & HYETT, solicitors, Bendigo, give notice in 1896 that William Arthur SPENCER, and his wife, now of Ellesmere, formerly of Charters Towers, have adopted Martha Mary Jane SNELL, 10 years, born Cobar NSW, daughter of late George Henry SNELL, late of Coolgardie.  3 pages, List 36.

QUIGLEY, Daniel.  Deserted wife Rosina in St. Kilda in 1897, went to Western Australia.  Carpenter, c40 years.  Found.  4 pages, List 17.

QUIGLEY, Ellen, gave birth to illegitimate child at the house of her employer Mrs. REYNOLDS, Ballarat, in 1900.  Medical man alerts police who arrange for a nurse and for her to go to step father Harry ELDRIDGE in Learmonth.  File covers claims for payment by nurse Mrs. W. HARRISON.  Father of child named.  20 pages, List 46.

QUIGLEY, I.T., Terang, 1902; applies to join police force, 2 pages, List 12.

QUIGLEY, Mrs. Rosina, Abbotsford, complains in 1904 that she was not informed of the death of her husband Daniel.  3 pages, List 71.

QUILL, Teresa nee FAHEY. Married to Edward QUILL, she married school teacher John Francis ROE/ROWE at Wallup.   His mother wants her prosecuted. 1901-02. Further large file – Teresa sues him for maintenance of their child.  List 1.

QUIN, Alexander Chamberlin, murdered Margaret E. WATSON at Albert Park in 1896.  File re case.  16 pages, List 39.

QUIN, John P., sought by brother Theodore in Melbourne in 1903.  He was late of Bright, 43 years, son of the late Charlotte, one of several brothers, including Augustus Whitney and Alfred Ernest.  Found.  13 pages, List 67.

QUIN GEE.  Died at Browns near Scarsdale in 1898, buried by police.  Had a share in a hut with ME SING who asks police to sell property as he wants to return to China as he is old – his letter on file.  Part of the proceeds of sale are refunded to cover cost of burial.  3 pages, List 16.

QUINLIVAN, A.G., son of Thomas of Coghill’s Creek, fell overboard from S.S. Courier in 1906.  Witness Alice FRASER, married, but living apart from her husband and with mother at Richmond, supplied statement.  Body not found.  Edward HAMBURGER, Hanna’s Bottling Works, Kalgoorlie WA, seeks details.  19 pages, some repetition.  List 82.

QUINLIVAN, Mary.  Warrant issued in 1896 after she failed to appear at Gordon Court in case involving attempted carnal knowledge of 13 year old Anne Greene by her father John GREENE, licensee of the Railway hotel there.  Mary is 17 years old, and his stepdaughter.  Mrs. Margaret HUNT and Mrs. Mary Ann CARROLL are witnesses in the case, as was Mary.  57 pages, List 38.

QUINN, Elizabeth, 7 years, living with mother Mary Ann Quinn in brothel in Melbourne, in 1900 raped by AH LOY alias HE LIM/LEW AH LOY, Chinese, c32 years, who had been living with her mother for past 8 years in the Brighton area.  Child taken from mother and placed in government care.  Warning: this is a particularly distressing case.  25 pages, some repetition, List 45.

QUINN, J. wrote confidential letter from Barmah in 1895, had lived there for 17 years.  Reported that cattle stealing was going on in State Forest Common; has found hidden bits of brands cut from live animals, and encloses one.  Asks investigation without his name being mentioned.  5 pages and sample in envelope. List 27.

QUINN, Mathew.  Wrote from Fitzroy in 1897.  Claims he was assaulted by Edward KING at Havelock and police did nothing about it.  Report shows he was one of a gang of unemployed men at temporary work.  Others were Arthur HILL, Franz WANGEMANN, Thomas BROWN, James ROY, who sign statement that he was struck in self defence, and was drunk.  Given a bad character.  9 pages, List 20.

QUINN, Patrick, wrote from Rookwood Sydney in 1904; signs with an X.  His papers were left with solicitor DYER in Bacchus Marsh; he is entitled to an Imperial Pension.  Dyer has died, asks police help to find his records.  He is old and nearly helpless.  Police cannot assist, but when they reply NSW police report he is in an asylum under the name of John McFARLANE.  6 pages, List 34.

QUINN, Patrick Thomas, deserted wife Helen F. and children Thomas Patrick, Martin, William S., and John at Ballarat in 1906.  He was a Victorian, miner, 40 years and believed to be mining in Tasmania.  File covers 1906-1908.  46 pages, List 84.

QUINT, Edwin, bricklayer, assaulted in 1898 by Herman KANE and James GRACE at Fitzroy.  Richard BARNES, boot maker, involved.  Crown Solicitor gives opinion over whether to lay assault charge – no.  32 pages, List 21.
