RADFORD, Mary, wife of George, 33 years, attempted suicide at Malvern in 1918.  Report on case.  3 pages, List 120.

RADIGOIS, Eugene.  Sought by French Consul in Melbourne in 1877; found.  9 pages, List 5.

RADLEY, Frederick, swagman, found ill near Natimuk in 1896 and sent by police to Horsham hospital.  He had come from South Australia to look for work, mother lives at Narracoorte.  5 pages, List 38.

RAFF, Alan, injured when passenger in a car driven by Dr. GORDON collided with a goods train at Carlton in 1911.  File re case and his injuries.  12 pages, List 33.

RAFTON, Amy, 17 years, left Hobart for Launceston in company with Josephine DONOVAN in 1895; they were heading for the steamer to Melbourne.  Her parents ask for her to be returned.  10 pages, List 27.

RAGGEDY GOLDFIELD.  Two reports on rush there in 1871.  List 4.

RAIL, William Henry, head teacher Dorcas Street State School South Melbourne.  In 1911 asks police to investigate claim by 9 year old child Vera PATTERSON of his indecent behavior towards her.  Vera’s mother is Margaret HINKS and Vera’s friend is Florence MOYES, 12 years.  Teachers Eliza McDonald and Stella JACKSON refute Vera’s claims and are believed by police.  15 pages, List 100.

RAILWAY ESTATE, St. Albans Township.  In 1928 James MIDDLETON, Roy STEENHOLDT and Susan Jane BOXSHALL, farmers, Longwarry, were persuaded by three men to purchase blocks in this estate, held by George STEWART.  The men gave the names of Patrick DEMPSEY, F.C MUIR and – ELLIS, but were really James MORONEY, Frederick NEWSOME and Francis MILLER.  A large file, includes brochure on estate, contracts, letter from solicitor etc.  List 59.

RAINES, Myrtle Mary,15 years,  left her home in North Melbourne in 1928. believed to be with Mavis HARRIS.  Photo, 2 pages, List 60.

RAINSFORD, Marie, in 1903 asks police help to find the father of her illegitimate child, who promised to marry her, but has disappeared.  He claimed to be a bank accountant in South Melbourne.  – COLLIS, is identified as the person, but he lodges a complaint with the Chief Commissioner at the insinuation.  16 pages, List 66.

RAMPLING, Mrs. J., Port Adelaide, wrote in 1907 re her husband James alias Jim BURKE, believed in Melbourne with another woman and family.  Not found.  5 pages, List 83.

RAMSDALE, Cecil, 9 years old in 1900, fell off a roundabout owned by Harry EVANS at Albert Park.  2 pages, List 49.

RANDALL, Mr. H., senior, King’s Plains via Blayney, wrote in 1917 re daughter Catherine who married c1901 Thomas BENNETT, shearer’s cook.  They have two children, Caroline and John.  6 pages, List 74.

RANKIN, Mrs. Dora.  Writes from Sydney in 1906, seeking John NIXON, police pensioner, has news for him.  8 pages, List 4.

RANKIN, J., wrote from Fort Franklin, Portsea in 1897.  Was detained there, so could not present himself for police medical examination; is 24 years old, a boxing champion in the forces.  2 pages, List 38.

RANKIN, James, left wife E. and two children c1891 and went to New Zealand, then various other places, failing to pay much maintenance.  She wrote from Kilmore in 1899, asking police help to find him. He is a mining speculator.  7 pages, List 43.

RANKIN, William Edward, left wife Emily and child destitute in Sydney in 1905; believed in Melbourne and using name Richard Rankin. 6 pages, List 69.

RAPER, Harry A., sought by brother Edward, Sydney, in 1909; he was a steward on the S.S. Burrumbeet.  Not found.  7 pages, List 87.

RAPKEN, Nathan, asked police to find his brother Baron in 1892.  He was 17 years old, Russian, and had left his Melbourne home in December 1891; believed working in Alexandra area.  Body found in Goulburn river is identified as his; family asked to pay burial expenses etc.  Two separate files, 17 pages, List 77.

RASMUSSEN, Vincent, Rutherglen, in 1909 explains failure to register birth of child Henry Herbert in time.  4 pages, List 88.

RATH, -.  German, living in North Melbourne in 1916, report that soldiers might attack him because he is German.  List 6.

RAVEN, George alias BRADLEY.  Fleeced Dora May WEAVER nee MONTIFORD out of £300 and various small amounts of money.  She was a widow, in charge of the Tunstall Railway Station, had 2 children and inherited money from her father.  They met in 1918, he claimed he was a returned soldier, proposed marriage to her.  Photo of him with barmaid Florence POWERS, her in military uniform in NSW.  Arrested in Sydney, returned to Melbourne, tried and convicted in 1919.  56 pages, List 21.

RAWLINS, Mrs William, Dalby Qld; in 1911 asks police to call on Mrs A. COOKSON re her 13 year old daughter May DOVE who went there.  She wants her returned home.  Cookson is found near Ballan.  6 pages, List 99.

RAY, Frederick Arthur Theodore, of Footscray, wrote to friend and former resident Gerald McCARTHY in New York in 1917, giving local news, and using ‘indecent language’.  Not clear, but appears letter was opened as McCarthy could not be found.  Ray subsequently interviewed by detectives and charged under the Postal Act.  Letter on file and very crude language used.  List 3.

RAY, James Edmund, let his pregnant wifeEva  in Abbotsford in 1912 and went to Tasmania to work, but didn’t send maintenance.  He was born Holloway England, 30 years old.  Found.  6 pages, List 103.  Further attempt to find him in 1914 as he wasn’t paying maintenance.  9 pages, List 112.

RAYMOND, Samuel.  Charles Hamilton STERNE enquired for his address on behalf of a friend in London, 1869.  Details of Raymond, (was formerly in Vic police force) and two letters from him, on file.  17 pages, List 4.

RAYNER, Mrs Lillie, Newtown Sydney, wrote in 1909 re her husband George.  A warrant was issued 11 years ago, was he found.  4 pages, List 90.

RAYNER, Thomas, Inverleigh.  In 1911 writes a number of letters complaining of local police.  Report details some of his actions.  17 pages, List 98.

RAZEY, Jane, wrote from Qld in 1895 re her son William Joseph, 15 years, who left Tambo with William H.J. LLOYD, racing man, to work for him.  Lloyd was to send him home if he required it.  Police find him.  5 pages, List 27.

READ, Alice.  Wrote from Brisbane in 1908.  She had divorced her husband Joseph for adultery with her sister, who had a child to him.  Alice given custody of her son Jack Bertram Read, but Joseph has taken him away to Melbourne.  12 pages, List 5.

READ, Edward Richard, killed at Fremantle, WA in 1901.  Brother William George Read, Bendigo, asks police for details of incident and property.  12 pages, List 52.

REARDON, Charles Philip of Tocumwal, NSW, wrote in 1919.  He was a wounded returned soldier and sought help in finding his parents Elizabeth and Patrick Kilday Reardon as he needed his birth certificate and the Registrar General had no record of it.  Found.  7 pages, List 3.

REAU, Marie Claire ‘Camilleville’ Barnawartha, wrote in 1917, asking police help with her brother John Camille Reau ‘a mental case’ who should be returned to an asylum as he was violent.  Her nephew James R. COLLIER also becomes involved when assaulted.  15 pages, List 72.

REDDAN FAMILY, Port Melbourne.  Anonymous letter in 1911 claims that their children are not going to school.  Report on family and circumstances.  4 pages, List 98.

REDDAN, Sarah, alias BREMNER, charged with keeping a brothel in Exhibition Street Melbourne in 1912.  Case dismissed by magistrates, but Crown Solicitor’s office appeals to Supreme Court and case is sent back to court.  She is found guilty.  33 pages, List 33.

REDFERN, Miss J.G., Daylesford, left a photo of Hector James WARING with police in 1914; asks for its return in 1916.  3 pages, List 78.

REECE, Alice, 17 years, left home in Kensington in 1917 with a married man H.A. MITCHELL; information sought by aunt May GOOLEY.  Mrs. DANDO, landlady, provides information which he denies. 8 pages, List 73.

REED, Richard of West Melbourne, alleged in 1877 that Dr Edward Paley had been using Yarra Bend Asylum funds to pay for his coachman.  C.F. ROBERTS and Richard Marr MURRAY ask investigation.  6 pages, List 5.

REEDY, Henry, shot by Leslie OXENBURY, Dandenong in 1911.  He was engaged to Zilla CARR who worked for Oxenbury’s father.  A large file, includes a petition from Dandenong residents commending actions of Constable THOMPSON No. 4722.  List 101.

REES, Rees, wrote from Newcastle NSW in 1895 re Thomas SCULLY, c35 years, employed at Jumbunna Coal Mine in Gippsland.  He was co-respondent in Rees’s divorce and owes him court costs.  Asks if his ex wife is with him.  7 pages, List 28.

REEVES, Albert, South Melbourne, born Sydney 1882.  Wrote in 1905 asking permission to act in various ways and set up a ‘society for law abiding citizens’.  Police establish he is employed by a detective agency.  4 pages, List 63.

REGAN, John 16 years and Michael Joseph 14 years, committed for trial in Melbourne.  Parents Thomas and Elizabeth at Broken Hill; boys had been committed to Industrial School there and absconded.  20 pages, List 76.

REID, Alice. Brought from Berrigan NSW to Melbourne by grandmother Margaret CORBETT to give birth to illegitimate child, 1892; suspected father named. Child went to Bendigo, Alice went to the Good Shepherd Convent for seven years, then into domestic service. Lost her right hand in a mangle accident. In 1900 living with Mrs. MAY, who writes to uncle John CORBETT for financial assistance for her. He asks police to investigate, but comes to Melbourne himself.  List 1.

REID, Catherine, complains to Chief Commissioner in 1900 of local police harassment.  Toorak police report she is the former mistress of someone (unnamed) and now soliciting.  3 pages, List 48.

REID, G.T., Upper Sturt, S.A., wrote in 1909 asking police to persuade his wife Kathleen CHADWICK to return to him; she is ‘on the town’ in Melbourne.  She left him a month after they were married.  6 pages, List 88.

REID, Jessie, Newtown, Sydney, wrote in 1907 seeking her two sisters Emily and Harriet; they were separated as children after their mother’s death.  Report states probably named May and Nellie and gives details.  4 pages, List 92.

REID, Johanna, left a note for her husband William at Drumberg near Heywood in 1860 and wandered off at night.  Found.  6 pages, List 105.

REID, Marion, divorced, and living in West Melbourne with Geoff AFFENDEN as his housekeeper in 1912; an alcoholic, found on the floor at Richard GOODWIN’s house, and he and others carry her home, but she is dead.  Police are called and a detailed report is compiled.  7 pages, List 102.

REIDY, John, 50 years, inmate of Royal Park Home for the Aged in 1911, attempted suicide.  Employees Samuel CARDWELL, and William STEVENSON interviewed; no prosecution.  6 pages, List 120.

REILLY, Catherine.  Gave birth to Queenie May RIELLY/REILLY at Fitzroy.  Believed father William George Acton WILSFORD had registered child, but after argument in 1904 found he had not.  Registered herself, but should have been within 3 days, so reported to police.  She lives apart from her husband, has 3 other children.  3 pages, List 14.

REILLY, John L.  Secretary of the Epsom Racing Club in 1913; robbed of £700 takings.  File includes evidence of witnesses Henry James BUCKLAND, assistant secretary, Herbert Francis MOGG, VRC employee, John ISHERWOOD, weigher, Harry MILLER, contractor of Hawthorn, J. LUDLOW, Edward CONWAY, trainer, John LEEK, commission agent.  20 pages, List 8.

REIMANN, Eva Dorothy, stole property from Edwin Thomas BURGESS, Bentleigh, market gardener, in 1918.  Arrested and tried she was given a suspended sentence.  Photo on file.  List 118.

REINER, John Godfrey.  Writes strange letters to police headquarters in 1904.  He lives near Dargo, is a German, 61 years and a ‘perfect nuisance’ to local police, according to them.  24 pages, List 10.

REISON, Christian (real name RASMUSSEN) left wife and children in Carlton in 1872 and went to Bendigo.  She writes several letters asking police help re maintenance.  He is a native of Archouse, Denmark, miner, 35-40 years old; her father is C/E clergyman Tresham D. GRIGG of Dublin.  ‘a very unfortunate marriage’.  17 pages, List 31.

REITZ, Ludwig, Smythesdale; infant daughter Ella died  in 1911, birth was never registered.  Report on case.  9 pages, List 99.

RENOUF, Catherine, 34 years, died in Melbourne gaol in 1873.  Husband Philip of Richmond refuses to pay burial costs.  6 pages, List 31.

RENTER, Mrs, Lobethal, South Australia.  In 1911 asks if husband Thomas, a Swede, bootmaker, 47 years, is alive or dead, hasn’t seen him for 12 years.  Death certificate of Christopher Renter on file, but this is a different person.  11 pages, List 100.

REUTER, Mrs. F., Lobethal, South Australia, wrote in 1903 re newspaper report of the death of person of this name who died suddenly in Victoria; he left her four years ago.  No trace.  7 pages, List 66.

REYNOLDS, Albert, 55 years, English, servant, died at Tumut NSW in 1897, formerly lived in Prahran.  Only known relative is daughter Laura who lives in West Brompton London.  File re disposal of assets.  14 pages, List 39.

REYNOLDS, Frederick P., Hobart, wrote in 1910, explaining his marital situation in great detail.  He was for many years an employee of the Melbourne Tramway Co., but had to leave Melbourne through his wife attempting to kill him.  He purchased 2 Rainsford Street St Kilda for her and their children, and has been paying the mortgage and family maintenance, but has been ill and fallen behind. 8 pages, List 94.

REYNOLDS, John Desmond, 37 years, Irish, from Ashfield NSW, arrested in Wodonga in 1893 and admitted to lunatic asylum.  File relates to notifying family, his release etc.  20 pages, List 25.

REYNOLD, Stanley William, 21 years, Hawthorn.  Sought by Leonard PONTIN in 1917, has been missing since 1915.  Photo on file.  List 116

REYNOLDS, Thomas. Sought by brother G. COLLINS in York Western Australia in 1900; may take the name Collins. Was in the employ of Dr. L.L. SMITH in 1864. Not found. 4 pages, List 2.

RHODES, Mrs. Mary, Richmond, claims payment for services for looking after illegitimate child Frederick Leslie PHILLIPS, whose mother Jane abandoned him, then later married Richard JOHNS, the father, and Rhodes’s brother, in 1896.  Very detailed file notes.  5 pages, List 36

RICE, A.E. ‘Professor’.  Writes from Ravenswood Qld in 1897 re his wife and son Fernleigh Archibald, born Ipswich 1875/6.  He was a performer of some sort, who travelled around, and left his wife behind as she had ‘taken to drink’.  Now wants his son back.  25 pages, List 6.

RICE, G.H., florist, Kew.  In 1912 letters claim he is trading after hours etc., report states dispute between the wives of him and his brother.  17 pages, List 103.

RICHARDS, Fred, last seen in Korrumburra, sought by wife A.L. Portland near Port Adelaide, in 1917; he has not supporter her and their 3 children for some years.  4 pages, List 73.

RICHARDS, George, road contractor, wrote two letters from Riana Tasmania in 1912 re his wife who took the 3 children and ran off with Charles Richard DOUCE and was in Melbourne.  Douce was playing the maloden [mandolin?]  on the streets of Melbourne.  Another letter from Douce’s stepfather W.P. SMITH.  The couple return to Tasmania, but leave again.  14 pages, List 32.

RICHARDS, George, Riana, Tasmania, wrote in 1913 re his wife who has again left home, with her 7 year old daughter; she is not right in the heads.  Was previously with Charles DOUCE, and now rumoured to be with Patrick SMITH, who has left there owing money.  10 pages, List 108.

RICHARDSON, Charlotte M. Toorak, 1898, brutally attacked at night; uncle reported case to police, and asked that it be kept out of newspapers, but Herald published details. A suspect was bought in for identification, but her parents refuse to allow her to attend the police station.  List 1.

RICHARDSON, Ethel Mary Ann Lowry, 15 years, died as a result of an abortion at Delegate NSW in 1906.  Inquest and report on case.  Witnesses: father Alexander George, brother Lindsay William, Mrs. Jane STOKES, Mrs. Jane WALSH, Mrs. Ellen RUSSELL, Adelaide and Adelaide Cora JACKSON, William HELMERS, Dr M.A. SCHALIT.  Very sad case.  27 pages, List 31.

RICHARDSON, William Mackay., information sought by wife Rosina, Wellington, Surrey England in 1916.  He was 39 years, native of North Wales, left in 1912, last heard of in 1915.  Found.  10 pages, List 77.

RICHMOND, 73-77 Swan St.  Fire in 1899, owner of property WINDRUM is suspected.  Evidence of 40 witnesses listed.  Large file.  List 42.

RICHMOND HOTELS.  Complaints by A. HODGES, art dealer, Burnley, W.G. RUSSELL, Richmond, and Rev. A. HOWELL, St. Bartholomew’s Burnley in 1896 that Cremean’s Hotel and the Gardener’s Arms Hotel, licensee Ellen BRENNAN are illegally trading on a Sunday.  Reports.  42 pages, List 37.

RICHMOND HOTELS.  STATION HOTEL, South Richmond, licensee Mrs. WARREN and sister Miss HOWLY.  Anonymous complaint in 1896 re Sunday trading.  ANCHOR OF HOPE, RED LION, YARRA and GARDENER’S ARMS implicated.  18 pages, List 37.

RICHMOND, Mrs Florence, ‘Warrawong’ Melton, in 1912 requests police protection during holidays from campers, shooters etc., her father – STAUGHTON’s property also needs protection.  8 , List 105.

RICHTER, Mrs. E., wrote from Ashfield Sydney in 1903 re her daughter Florence, believed working in the theatre.  Found.  7 pages, List 66.

RICKARDS, Florence, staying with Myrtle BURNHAM in Northcote in 1917 when admitted to mental hospital as delusional.  Discharged 3 months later and sailed with husband to Singapore.  She then wrote a 29 page letter detailing her grievances and treatment.  She was born in New Jersey, was 40 years old and previously was in the Malay States.  31 pages, List 74.

RICKETSON, Charles N., wrote from Glen Eira, Caulfield in 1900, asking permission to ride his tricycle on the footpath; is partially paralysed.  2 pages, List 44.

RICKIE, William, and son William Henry, 18 years, died in 1895 in Queensland from exposure .  Mrs Jane Rickie of Richmond asks help to get their possessions sent to her.  12 pages, List 30.

RIDDIOUGH, Annie, 19 years, ran away from her home at Kogarah NSW in 1916 with travelling salesman H.B. OBERMEYER.  Returned, but ran away again.  Letters from her mother – believes she is living under the name of Phyllis LLOYD.  A very detailed report of her activities.  33 pages, List 77.

RIDGELL, Richard, deserted wife and four children in 1892; plumber.  In 1897 wife took out warrant for failure to pay maintenance at Kyneton; he was believed to be in Fremantle.  Local police report she is living on a farm near Pipers Creek with a man named WEBB.  5 pages, List 40.

RIDGWAY, Frederick, 21 years, attempted suicide at Carlton in 1912, after losing money on racehorses.  Parents live in Tasmania.  7 pages, List 105.

RIECK, Charles, Paddington Sydney NSW, wrote in 1910 re his 16 year old  daughter Ethel May, who went to Melbourne  in 1908 as nursemaid with Mrs. MARIA, whose husband had a fruit shop in Brunswick.  Concerned about her welfare. he asks police to send her home.  7 pages, List 54.

RIGGS, George M., sight damaged while mining in W.A. and returned to Victoria for treatment.  Discharged from Eye and Ear Hospital in 1899 as incurable.  In 1900 wished to return to the hospital and asked police to arrange train trip from north east.  Discussion re costs involved revealed that he was being maintained by his brother, a solicitor in Castle Pollard, West Meath Ireland.  16 pages, List 46.

RILEY, Florence, Brighton, alleged in 1918 that she was assaulted by a railway man after she declined to sign a loyalty petition at a public meeting, but investigation showed she was hit by her husband Charles Lincoln Riley.  15 pages, List 69.

RILEY, George, convicted of attempted robbery of Annie GREIG of Richmond and shooting at George BROWN, head gardener, Fitzroy Gardens, in 1901.  Two different photos of him on file; is 18 years, born NSW.  Interstate police asked to help with his background.  A large file, mostly copies of testimonies.  List 52.

RILEY, Tom, Lauriston Hall, East Melbourne, wrote twice in 1913 on behalf of Miss R. Innell, the proprietor of the boarding house, complaining of the actions of police when investigating a robbery there.  A boarder, Mrs H.J MANSON, had had her jewellery stolen.  A very detailed report is given.  15 pages, List 92.

RILEY, Vera M., 22 years, left parents home in Sydney in 1913; father George Aubrey Riley asks discreet enquiry, believes she is with H.C. CORNFORTH.  Found.  6 pages, List 94.

RIORDAN, Edward, woolclasser, sought by wife Margaret, Paddington NSW, in 1904.  He left her 12 years ago, believed near Colac. They were married at Forbes in 1890.  Found, an alcoholic.  7 pages, List 68.

RIORDAN, Owen, arrested by Brisbane police in 1896.  They ask for details of his character; is a son of ex Sgt Timothy Riordan, his mother is in Hawthorn.  Owen is ‘fond of drink’ and had previously failed to pay maintenance on his illegitimate child.  11 pages, List 37.

RISPIN, Catherine, wrote from South Yarra in 1900 re husband John William Rispin, who deserted her and their two children as she was about to be confined with her third child. They are destitute.  He is a carpenter, English, 35 years, believed to be at Echuca with a Miss FULFORD, 19 years.  11 pages, List 45.

RITCHIE, Florrie.  Anonymous letter in 1912 from Hillston NSW, claiming that she left there for Melbourne to give birth and have the child killed.  She is staying with her sister Mrs BRADY, Brunswick. Child found in Foundling Home.  9 pages, List 102.

RITCHIE, Gladys, young girl, and Robert MAHER c7 years, came from Tasmania with Mrs. GREGORY with whom they were boarded out, to Melbourne in 1916.  Her daughter Mrs. LEWIS and her two children were with them.  Local officials ask Gladys’s removal from her care.  7 pages, List 76.

RITCHIE, Malcolm. Large file re his alleged incest on daughters Mabel and Helena Ann at Pakenham in 1899. List 2.

RIVES, Joseph, florist, Melbourne, reported in 1928 that employee Victor Rives alias Venerando BARBAGOLO (BARBAGALLO?) had robbed him.  Traced to Qld., and relatives interviewed, but charge dropped.  Photo on file.  27 pages, List 58.

ROACH, Jane.  Deniliquin police enquire about her and her illegitimate child in 1864; she is a housemaid in Melbourne.  Police find child is being cared for by Mary BARRY.  11 pages, List 3.

ROACH, Jean, 22 years, sought by her father L. in Wollongong in 1914; her brother was in South Yarra, but has moved as has the father.  Found. 6 pages, List 110

ROBB, Alexander Hay, engineer, Sydney, asked in 1912 if a woman found drowned in Melbourne was his wife Isabella Watson SIMPSON,  (described) who left him and their daughter 3 months ago; they came from Dundee Scotland 15 months ago.  Not her.  6 pages, List 104.

ROBBERDS, Harold Mortimer, 19 years, missing from Barellan NSW in 1914; photo on file.  2 pages, List 113.

ROBERTS, Charles Henry, alias George RICHARDS, storekeeper,deserted wife M. and five children in Sydney in 1906.  Police attempt to find him in 1909.  6 pages, List 87.

ROBERTS, George Thomas, ‘Avondale’ Ringwood, alleges in 1913 that the Mitcham post mistress Mrs MARKHAM interfered with his mail and local constable KANE committed perjury.  Several letters from him; addicted to drink.  Son is a baker.  21 pages, List 109.

ROBERTS, Henry Frederick, drowned in a quarry at Burnley in 1902.  File re attempts to recover body.  15 pages, List 65.

ROBERTS, Mrs. S. Manly, Sydney, wrote in 1917 asking who could help her financially, her ‘quite worthless’ husband William Thomas Roberts is in Melbourne gaol.  5 pages, List 72.

ROBERTS, Thomas Thornton, deserted wife G. in Adelaide in 1898.  She has heard he is in Portland using the name MARTIN, is a bootmaker.  Local police report that MARTYN is a bootmaker there, has been there for some time, has a family there.  7 pages, List 21.

ROBERTS, William.  Wrote from Barraba NSW in 1908 re Thomas JONES and Abraham TERRIL.  Police interview Mary Ann Terrill who explains the connection.  15 pages, List 5.

ROBERTS, William Francis, born Women’s Hospital 1909 and parents registered as Elizabeth and Thomas Francis Roberts, however she was Mrs Elizabeth King, 27 years, who was married at Corowa in 1900 and hadn’t seen her husband for some years.  She and her 8 year daughter Elizabeth were living with Roberts.  Copy of birth certificate on file and discussion on possible prosecution.  10 pages, List 90.

ROBERTSON, A., wrote from Beechworth in 1900, complaining about the Chinese Camp there and the brothel at AH TOE’s premises.  Local police report that the writer is Reginald HEADLEY ‘a harmless lunatic’, women mentioned were Christine ROBINSON who was living with Ah CHEE, and  Lily ROBINSON, recently discharged from gaol.  6 pages, List 46.

ROBERTSON, Eugenia nee GREENBANK.  German Consul asks police in 1902 to confirm birth of her illegitimate daughter Margaretta (Ettie) in 1880.  Eugenia was a Tasmanian and later married the child’s father Christian HILDEBRANDT.  3 pages, List 63.

ROBINSON, Emma.  Paddington NSW, wrote in 1900 re her daughter Theresa PRENDERGAST, who went with her employer Mrs. SIMPSON to Melbourne some years ago.  Believes she is being used for immoral purposes; Mrs. Simpson running a pub.  Police find Simpson caring for her after she has had a child.  7 pages, List 3.

ROBINSON, Francis Ormond, grazier, married Margaret MacVEAN at Cressy in 1874, then lived with servant Jane OATS and had two children by her, Frank Ascot and Arthur Lyndhurst.  In 1885 charged with perjury over false registration of births.  Certificates on file, along with letters from John MacVEAN.  A large file, List 57.

ROBINSON, George Washington.  Charged with bigamy in 1864.  First wife Margaret THIRD, second not named but marriage took place at Tarraville.  Copy of first marriage certificate on file.  Witnesses John and Margaret BEGGS seek expenses.  21 pages, List 4.

ROBINSON, H. Arlies, Claremont W.A., wrote in 1913 regarding his forthcoming divorce case, and a respondent – DRAKE.  His wife and he have disappeared.  Incomplete file.  2 pages, List 93.

ROBINSON, Henry, sought by J. CURRY, Boggo Road, Brisbane Qld in 1897.  His unnamed brother had died some years ago, leaving a wife and young son; the wife has now died and the child needs support.  Henry used to play bagpipes in hotels in Melbourne, and details of men who did this are given, but he is not found.  15 pages, List 68.

ROBINSON, James J., wrote a very strange letter from Maldon in 1905, had recently come from Western Australia and staying with sister Mrs. Adelaide CARMAN.  He is fixated on electricity and had been in an asylum.  6 pages, List 52.

ROBINSON, Margaret, 23 years, daughter of Mrs. Mary, of Collingwood.  Died after illegal abortion in 1895.  Had been keeping company with Arthur DAVIES, tobacconist, Collingwood, who denied knowing she was pregnant.  Henrietta NICOL, keeps a wine shop; Rose KENNEDY (Madame de ROSE), palmist and Dr. J.D. ROBLEY, Mary Ann nee FROOD. Writes in 1894 asking police to help in getting documents retained by Adelaide solicitor George F. Michell. These include her marriage in 1880 and false registration of birth of William Nevison Robley and Louisa Victoria Robley to mother Louisa Charlotte KLAPPROTH. 5 pages.  List 1.

ROBSON, Robert, Stawell West, writes a number of strange letters to police in 1896; is suffering hallucinations.  Mother says he is not dangerous.  18 pages, List 36.

ROCHESTER, Vena/Bena, 19 years, left Sydney by train in 1900, heading to Adelaide via Melbourne, to meet with boyfriend HYLAND whom she planned to marry.  Chief Commissioner NSW telegrams police in Melbourne on behalf of her parents.  They intercept her and she returns home.  6 pages, List 45.

RODGERS, Annie, dressmaker, Carlton, sought by son from first marriage William DUNSTON of Hamilton New Zealand, in 1903.  Police ascertain her second husband died in 1890, but she is not found.  5 pages, List 46.

RODGERS, H.V., Geelong, wrote in 1909 asking police to find his son Joseph Henry.  The writer was 77 years old and blinded in an accident at Broken Hill; his sister was Mrs Isabella PALLITER [?]  Son found interstate.  5 pages, List 90.

RODWAY, Alfred Jenner, deserted wife Gertrude and 3 children at Richmond in 1904.  Two letters from her, she believed him to be in W.A. in 1906, found.  18 pages, List 50.

ROE, E.M., bookbinder, Ballarat, wrote in 1918 seeking return of a trumpet made by his late father John C. Roe, of Liverpool England.  He was not allowed to take it with him when admitted to an asylum.  5 pages, List 118.

ROGERS, Mrs A., Kinghorne, Qld, wrote in 1910 re husband Alexander who had deserted her; she is destitute.  8 pages, List 98.

ROGERS, Mrs. Ada.  Anonymous letter from Carlton in 1897 alleges she is living an immoral life, has two young children.  Report finds she is living apart from her husband, no evidence of prostitution.  List 20.

ROGERS, J.H., Moonta Mines, Hamley S.A., wrote in 1918 re his father H.V., who has not replied to his letters, last heard from in Geelong, is blind.  Found.  5 pages. List 119.

ROGERS, Joseph Henry, sought by blind father H.C. Rogers, Geelong, in 1913.  Joseph is c26 years and was last heard of in South Aust.  Mention of family inheritance.  Found.  7 pages, List 94.

ROGERS, Robert Levanen, 45 year, Irish, a patient in Gladvill Insane Asylum Sydney.  In 1916 his wife asks for relatives to be found; brother David Gregory found and provides family details.  Their parents were David Gregory and Arabella nee HOLMAN.  13 pages, List 78.

ROGERS, Thomas, wrote from Outtrim Coal Co., in 1899, reporting that his wife Jane (Jeannie) had left him and their 4 month old child and gone to Melbourne; asks help to find her.  7 pages, List 41.

ROLF, Frederick, writes 2 letters from Maryborough in 1897, attempting to “prevent his paramour Mrs. Sarah RANDALL” associating with the Chinese Camp inhabitants there.  He was assaulted in the camp by SEE TOY.  7 pages, List 20.

ROLLS, Albert. Failure to pay alimony to divorced wife Margaret, 1902. She and the children are in Melbourne, he is in Sydney.  List 1.

ROOKS, Mrs. John, wrote from Elphinstone, Darling Downs Qld in 1904 re her brother Samuel George SYMONS, believed accidentally killed in Melbourne in 1903.  Police find this is true, but she has herself died by the time the answer is given.  8 pages, List 34.

ROONEY, Patrick, 73 years, died at a Ballarat boarding house run by Mrs PHILLIPS in 1914.  She informed wife who was at Wellington, NSW, who wrote to police asking details, which are supplied.  8 pages, List 110.

ROPER, Charles, sought by mother Mrs. M. Roper, Neutral Bay in 1907.  She doesn’t say so, but he was a Ward of the State who absconded in 1906.  5 pages, List 22.

ROPER, Robert F., Sydney, alerts police in 1888 that John James DOBBINSON, a law clerk, who absconded from his employers ELLIS & ELLIS, solicitors, in London in 1876, having stolen money, is living in Victoria under the name of William ROSE.  Report on case; victim declines to extradite him.  29 pages, List 56.

ROWE/BOWE, Brice, Carlton, handcuff and lock expert, asked permission in 1909 to be handcuffed and placed in a box in the Yarra, where he would set himself free.  2 pages, List 90.

ROWE, James, died at his residence Yarraweyah in 1896, husband of Elizabeth.  Mrs Sarah Jane MARLENGREN wrote from Port Melbourne, asking if he is her father Richard Henry Rowe, who left her mother and 7 children in Long Gully Bendigo in 1877, and was last seen in Bethanga.  Her mother died six months after he left.  He was Cornish, 64 years old and had brothers Ezekiel and Matthew, and James has children of that name listed in the paper.  The children of the first wife are Mary Ann (Mrs McMAHON), herself, William Edward, James Thomas, Elizabeth Ann (Mrs. BROWN), Richard Henry Nicholas and George Woolcock.  Not police matter.  5 pages, List 37.

ROWE, P.W., wrote from Junee Junction in 1895 re his young son Charles Edward, who was employed by Alfred MONEY/MOLNEY, travelling furniture repairer, last heard of in Bendigo in 1894.  9 pages, List 28.

ROWE, William, 40 years, miner, left Adelaide in 1890, last heard of in Bendigo, sought by Samuel C. HUGHES of Adelaide, who was a private enquiry agent; possibly bigamous marriage.  9 pages, List 14.

ROWLAND, Thomas Edward.  Married Mary Eliza ROWSELL, when she developed phthisis he employed Charlotte SCARBOROUGH to help look after her.  When Mary died at Muroon in May 1897 he shortly afterwards married Charlotte, and their son Thomas was born later that year.  Local constable reports he declared himself a bachelor on second marriage certificate, and queries whether he should be prosecuted.  Both marriage certificates, Mary’s death certificate and Thomas’s birth certificate on file.  Police eventually decide against prosecution.  24 pages, List 21.

ROWLANDS, Mrs Anna, in Ballarat in 1898.  In 1910 she is sought by her sister Mrs Thomas P. DAILY, Conway, North Dakota, USA.  Found.  4 pages, List 97.

ROWLEY, Josiah, wrote 21 page letter from Narracan, detailing his dealings with George Edward SWALLOW, who was passing valueless cheques and owed money.  He claimed to be well connected, but it was all a sham, and people Rowley contacted confirmed this.  Swallow sentenced to imprisonment at Morwell in 1896.  67 pages, List 36.

RYAN, Annie, 13 years, North Melbourne, ran away from parents in 1909, and using a false name persuaded new arrival David WATT, 17 years, to pay her fare to Sydney.  She was picked up there and returned to Melbourne, where her parents placed her in the Abbotsford Convent.  9 pages, List 88.

RYAN, Mrs. Annie C, wrote from Sale in 1917.  She was the mother of four sons who ‘went to the front’, two of whom were killed.  The other two returned home but she hasn’t seen them; asks if the Constable Ryan mentioned in a newspaper report is her son.  2 pages, List 70.

RYAN, John, teacher at Bootahpool school Port Fairy, complains about local constable, larrikins etc. in 1896-7.  Suggestion he is suffering from hallucinations.  List 41.

SANDERSON, Henry Horner, sawmiller, charged with failure to register birth of son Donald, born Warburton, in 1912; did so to avoid vaccination.  7 pages, List 103.

SANDERSON, Thomas, sought by wife A.W. in Sydney in 1894.  He asked her to go there, and said he would follow once his business matters were arranged, but never came.  She and their daughter are penniless.  She believes he’s at Archdale near Bealiba.  Local police report he is there with a wife and family, and explain that he once lived with a woman named Annie MORRISON at Ballarat, and are not sure which is the legitimate wife.  File ends with her obtaining money to return to Victoria.  6 pages, List 41.

SANDRY, Thomas.  Information as to his character sought by J.E. PHELAN, Guyra Shire Council NSW in 1913 on behalf of the unnamed mother of a woman who has become engaged to him.  5 pages, List 94.

SANGAL, Edward Christopher, murdered at Keysborough in 1902.  Wife Selina and August TISLER are convicted.  This is a large file.  List 63.

SANSON, Harry, 40 years, has two illegitimate children, Hugh and Alfred to Mrs Martha FISHER.  In c1913 Maud BRUNDELL lives with the family and becomes pregnant to him.  He disappears and is believed in Tasmania; Martha goes to Qld and Alfred goes with her sister Mrs BEVIS.  File concerns what to do with Hugh, and Maud’s efforts to get maintenance from him.  A complicated file!  22 pages, List 108.

SAUNDERS, Charles, East Devonport, Tasmania, writes in 1898 re son John’s death in Inglewood hospital.  6 pages, List 19.

SAUNDERS, H., Youarang via Tungamah.  In 1929 he asked police to find his wife Linda Eileen nee MANNING, who had left there for Melbourne, staying at the City Mission in the past, and had not returned.  File has copies of her marriages with George Frederick Elmore Vincent O’BRIEN in 1919 and with Saunders at Shepparton in 1928, and includes letters from a former fiancée Robert WANDEL who warns against having anything to do with her, and Matron of the City Mission etc.  Photo of Saunders and her on the file.  Saunders suicided, so bigamy case not proceeded with.  This is a large file.  List 60.

SAUNDERS, Samuel, sought in 1897.  His brother David was accidentally killed in 1892; photo of him taken c1887 on file.  They were the sons of Charles and Catherine Sheperd McPhail Saunders.  She died at White Hills in 1892 and death registration also on file. SAWERS, S. of Malvern, complains in 1906 of offensive postcards, sent he thinks by relatives Winnie and Ida, who dislike his second wife.  3 pages, List 3.

SAWYERS, James, deserted his wife in Kalgoorlie in 1907, believed to be in Melbourne.  They were married for 19 years, he was c45 years old, born in Collingwood.  Found, he declines to help.  7 pages, List 70.

SAX, Charles Waldemar, optician, died suddenly in 1909 at Warracknabeal and identified as Charles WALTERS.  Correspondence with wife Louisa in Hackney S.A. to ascertain correct details.  Photo and 10 pages, List 91.

SAYERS, Annie, 19 years, married Albert HALL in Melbourne in 1904, claiming to be 21.  Her mother Mrs. John CLANCY reports her to police; report on case.  3 pages, List 65.

SAYERS, Jessie. Alias WALSH/WILLIAMS. Prostitute, complains about local constable harassing her; claims assisted police in past. Report on her background and present mode of living, 1895.  List 1.

SAYERS, Madge J., Tatura, deserted by her husband in 1912, she has 3 children that she has no money to feed; doesn’t want them to go into State care.  4 pages, List 101.

SCAIFE, Walter Duncan, Randwick, Sydney, in 1913 sought his brother in law H.J. MORTYNE, tailor, who left Cobram for Melbourne, and hasn’t been heard from since.  5 pages, List 106.

SCANLAN, Johanna, given permission by the Mayor of Melbourne to sell matches on the steps of the Independent Church in Melbourne in 1896.  She is 24 years, has an illegitimate son and has been deserted by the father.  Discussion re women selling matches at night.  4 pages, List 36.

SCARBOROUGH, Mrs., Warrnambool.  House owned by her destroyed by fire in 1900; report on, and comment from insurance company.  10 pages, List 47.

SCARLETT, Emily F., wrote from Stanmore Sydney in 1912 re a report of the death of Robert SCARLETT.  Is it her husband?  She has been separated from him for past six years.  Police report it was Robert Edward Scarlett, a painter from Ballarat.  4 pages, List 33.

SCARR, Martha, Parramatta NSW, seduced and abandoned by Horace DAVEY of Frankston in 1908.  He denies claim.  5 pages, List 86.

SCATTERGOOD, James Holmes.  Wanted for larceny on Melbourne Fire Brigade in 1898; located overseas in 1899, but problem in extradiction as no treaty.  Charles SALTER is president of MFB.  28 pages, List 39.

SCHAECH, Constable A.E., married, dismissed from police force in 1917 after affair with Daisy MARSHALL, for whom he provided a false reference.  Letters to her on file, along with his plea to be reinstated.  This is a very large file.  List 75.

SCHAEFFER, Helen, charged Joseph NEWSON with failure to support their illegitimate child at Prahran in 1894.  He went to Sydney and she followed and tried to find him, leaving child with Mrs. CLARK of Bridport St Albert Park, who complained to police that she was owed money to care for him, and if not forthcoming she would have him committed.  Helen arranges that her employer Herbert DEMPSTER will visit Melbourne and collect child, which is done.  40 pages, List 41.

SCHERNING, Alexander. Unnamed friends in South Melbourne asked police to trace him in 1899, was last heard of at Nannie in Western Australia. They believed he was a native of New Zealand, aged 27 years, but police find him and ascertain he was born in Denmark and had a sister in New Zealand. 8 pages, List 2.

SCHMIDT, William Barry, 13 years, born Warburton, ran away from home in Burnley in 1906 and found working for Mr. KENNY at Surrey Hills.  Returned home, he absconds again.  Two letters from mother Susannah on file.  22 pages, List 70.

SCHMUTTER, William and Henry H.  Report on them and their background requested by Chief Commissioner in 1918, and very detailed information supplied by Bunyip police.  3 pages, List 120.

SCHNEIDER, Flora A. of St. Kilda.  Youngest daughter of the late J.B. WERE, and in bad health.  Caring for two children whose mothers are in W.A. in 1899.  Louisa KNEALE owes her money for maintenance, seeks police help in getting it.  Police find she is a barmaide in Perth.  5 pages, List 16.

SCHOLZ, Charles Leslie.  German Consulate in Melbourne in 1905 asks police to monitor his movements; he is a geologist and metallurgist.  9 pages, some repetitious.  List 4.

SCHWERKHOLT, Carl Berno, marine stores dealer, died at the Alfred Hospital in 1899.  In 1900 his stepmother Wilhelmina, and mother of his wife Wilhelmina, made a claim that he had been poisoned, and that his widow was in a relationship with Thomas JACKSON, who managed the store.  Statements are taken from various people, but no action taken.  18 pages, List 44.

SCOBLE, Mrs. Florence.  Applies to have licence of Albert Hotel West Melbourne transferred to her from Maria La FONTA in 1897; police report she lived with James HURAN at Ballan, two children put in a Home, adverse report on her reputation.  15 pages, List 20.

SCOTT, Salvador, failed to pay maintenance for wife and children at Ballarat, so a search was undertaken in 1908; believed in Broken Hill where his sister Mrs BROOKS lived.  Not found.  11 pages, List 85.

SCOTT, Thomas E., telegraphed from Stockton, NSW in 1896 re passenger named Scott reported to be injured on ship ‘Gabo’; asks details.  Alexander Scott found in hospital, not seriously injured; wife at Stockton informed.  8 pages, List 39.

SEAMONS, Caroline Ann, Kooroocheang, Daylesford; in 1916 gave birth to illegitimate child at home of Mrs. SIMPSON, who advertised for someone to adopt it, and Mrs. Millie EDMUNDS of Thornbury did so.  Father of child Norman EVANS had enlisted.  10 pages, List 78.

SEARCH, Edward Joseph, deserted wife Lilian Mary and 4 children at Bairnsdale c1908; Londoner, butcher, 43 years.  In 1910 she asked police to find him, believed in Sydney with Suzie MOLOY [MOLLOY?]  Found.  List 97.

SEARLE, Albert, Rushcutters Bay, Sydney, wrote in 1907 re his brother Richard, c30 years old.  Found.  3 pages, List 44.

SEARLE, George Ernest, native of Morrisons in Victoria, a grocer/draper, 32 years, was sought by his mother Catherine CUNNINGHAM, who wrote from Camperdown Sydney in 1899.  He left Katoomba NSW in 1889 on account of his wife’s conduct.  Not found.  9 pages, List 43.

SEFTON, Clarence Victor. Murdered his male infant child, mother Millicent BERGER, 1917. Death sentence commuted. Very large file.  List 1.

SEGRAVE, M.F., wrote from Wehla in 1900 re her brother – MARKS, living with her, who was threatening to harm her and himself; escorted to Bendigo Benevolent Asylum.  8 pages, List 43.

SEGRAVE, W.,  JP, asks police help in 1896 because of anonymous slanderous letters being circulated in Flinders.  James PULLING and Emily L. CLAYTON also write about the matter.  Mrs. George WATSON eventually confesses.  She is 32 years, has 2 girls.  Constable writes sympathetic letter about her troubles.  Large file, includes letters.  List 36.

SEITELBACH, Mrs. J.B.  Wrote from Sydney in 1899 re her brother in law W.H. O’MEARA, who has failed to pay maintenance to her sister and family as agreed.  He worked in the Govt. Statist’s Office Melbourne.  11 pages, List 3.

SELBERG, Peter, Balmain, Sydney, reports that his wife Hannah left him with their 3 children c1909, and went to Melbourne with her mother Mrs SILK.  Asks police to find her.  7 pages, List 102.

SELLECK, Charles, born Clare South Australia, sought by brother W.H., blacksmith, Laura, S.A. in 1906.  He was last heard of in 1892.  Found.  8 pages, List 69.

SEMMENS, Edwin Charles, sought by wife Alice E., West Melbourne, who wrote to London police in 1913.  Their report is on the file.  3 pages, list 108.

SEMMENS, J., Broken Hill, asked police to find his son in 1907.  The family were living together, but when he took ill and was taken to hospital, his wife Louise sold up and left for Melbourne, taking their son with her.  He believes she may be with her sister Mrs. PUNCH.  Found.  5 pages, List 82.

SERGISON, Albert William.  Police in Darwin ask his whereabouts in 1894.  His wife in the U.K. is anxious to know if he is dead or alive.  He deserted her many years ago.  Found interstate, 12 pages, List 24.

SETON, T., Constable 6016, enlisted in army, asks extended leave; wife Ada begs Chief Commissioner not to let him go into the army.  4 pages, List 78.

SEWELL, Eliza, Mackay, North Qld., wrote in 1913; she has seen a newspaper report of Harry Sewell being shot at and asked if it was her 42 year old husband, who had left her 5 years ago for Sarah WHARTON.  Reply states name was Sinnett not Sewell.  6 pages, List 107.

SEXTON, Frank, writs from Kelly Basin, Tasmania in 1899 re luggage left in storage at the West Melbourne Coffee Palace.  He has written to the manager Mrs. MURRAY, asking for it to be forwarded on, but it has not been.  It includes two manuscripts written by him.  Found; his former employer NUNAN BROS. are holding it for him.  10 pages, List 41.

SEYMOUR, George, Rutherglen.  Wrongly arrested on warrant for false pretences, kept in cell, seeks compensation, 1898.  20 pages, List 17.

SEYMOUR, Georgina, Stanmore, NSW, wrote in 1905 seeking information on Elizabeth MOORE (or TRAVIS), wife of Samuel, to kept a hotel in Bendigo 1853 – 1884.  She is a relative.  Bendigo resident states received the same letter but the signature was Florence FIRMIN.  11 pages, List 64.

SHACKELL, Charles Casson.  Applied for a  position with the NSW Dental Board in 1903, under name of Casson SHARKELL.  Their Registrar, Horace TAYLOR, asks for confidential report on him.  This states that he’s lived with Mrs. Frances GANNON.  4 pages, List 65.

SHAH MAHOMED.  Indian Eye Doctor, wrote from Ballarat in 1910 re troubles he has had with larrikins for some months.  Police report he is eccentric, his countrymen offered to pay fare back to India, but he refused to go.  6 pages, List 33

SHANKS, Isaiah Samuel, deserted wife Louisa Kate and children in 1906.  He is a dock labourer, 37 years, may be living with Rose SYMONS.  Found interstate.  7 pages,  List 26.

SHANNON, Andrew, Richmond, plasterer, wrote in 1913; a garbled letter relating to his children by Mrs Frank KELLETT, who had left him.  5 pages, List 108.

SHANNON, James, tailor, Melbourne, sought by wife Margaret, Sydney, in 1908; they have 5 children and need maintenance.  Found, file notes is an alcoholic.  5 pages, List 86.

SHARKEY, H/M.  Deserted wife a Wellington NSW in 1910; she asks police to find him.  Note:  writing is very difficult to decipher.  10 pages, List 96.

SHARP, Alice.  Anonymous letter claims she is being illtreated by her adopted parents WELLS at Ferntree Gully in 1898.  Her mother died c1897.  4 pages, List 16.

SHARP, Samuel Albert, died in NSW in 1896, death certificate on file.  He was c34 years old, and a gardener.  Told Mrs. Sarah LIND that his mother was in England.  Incomplete file, but someone was enquiring about his whereabouts in 1897.  25 pages, List 38.

SHAW, Geoffrey Frederick, watchmaker and jeweller, deserted wife and four children at Kalangadoo South Australia c1906.  In 1909 she wrote asking police to find him, thought he was in Victoria.  7 pages, List 89.

SHAW, Miss J.A. of Melbourne, wrote in 1898 ‘To you in whose power it is to aid and deliver human beings from a sad and bitter fate help and assist me a poor penniless and sorrow stricken girl …’.  Her friend Frederick CHARLESWORTH had disappeared and she was worried sick about him. SHAW, Thomas, Whitford Hills Tasmania, wrote in 1911 asking if his daughter had taken out a warrant against her husband Sydney SMITH in 1910.  Letter from Smith on file, in Broken Hill.  6 pages, List 95.

SHEA, Anne Marie, writes strange letters to Chief Commissioner.  Report states she is a patient on trial from a lunatic asylum, under the care of Eliza BALLINGER, wife of Joseph, at Northcote.  22 pages, List 40.

SHEPHERDSON, Francis Stanley, arrested interstate, bought to Melbourne, tried and convicted of bigamy, wrote in 1910 from gaol about his missing property.  Detailed file and attempts to locate it.  53 pages, List 96.

SHEPPARD, Arthur, 18 years, took money from Thomas WADE, greengrocer, Footscray in 1914; warrant issued.  His parents at Euroa wrote, offering to pay the money back, have sold furniture to do so.  4 pages, List 110.

SHEPPARD, Edward. Charged with sexual act on Edith May SEARLE, 12 years, at Broadford. He is 23 years old and a servant of her parents. Not guilty. 1892.  List 1.

SHERIDAN, Catherine. Illegitimate child of hers died in Melbourne in 1879. List 1.

SHERLOCK, James, arrested for drunkenness in Melbourne in 1899, found to be insane and sent to an asylum.  He had come from Paddington NSW, and attempts are made to contact his family.  Solicitors Bradley & Son write that his wife obtained a separation order some months ago and wants nothing to do with him.  17 pages, List 42.

SHERON, John, sought by brother James, Greenbushes WA in 1905.  Their father John of Rushworth, died at Deniliquin in 1878.  He hasn’t heard from his brother for some years.  Not found.  10 pages, List 120.

SHEVILL, Peter Wotton.  Information sought in 1909 by nephew William Wotton Sheville, NSW.  Family located.  5 pages, List 90.

SHIELDS, Alma Frances born 1908 Fitzroy, mother Isabella, her husband Thomas at Foster.  Failure to register birth in time is queried in 1909.  8 pages, List 89.

SILIKIS, John, deserted wife Evangela in Sydney.  In 1919 solicitor there writes re his maintenance arrears, he is in Melbourne.  5 pages, List 121.

SILK, Frederick, Bayswater, shot wife Bertha in 1917, then killed himself.  Police report on case, wife’s recovery etc.  13 pages, List 119.

SINCOCK, F.J.  Writes from Melbourne in 1897 that a young woman, just over 16 years, living at Invergordon, was seduced by James Lee.  Gave birth to male child, is now in the Salvation Army Home.  He asks that Lee pay maintenance; he is the son of Frederick of Wunghu, who informs police that his son has gone to W.A.  7 pages, List 20.

SMEATON, Walter, rabbiter, Bindi Station Gippsland, reported in 1913 that his employee Maurice Arthur CANDY claimed that he was wanted in Sydenham London for maintenance on his illegitimate child; had been working for the British Motor Company there, but joined the navy and then came to Australia.  The unnamed girl lived in Modbury. Scotland Yard alerted and replied name not familiar to them.  11 pages, List 92.

SMITH, Mrs E.M., Sydney, wrote in 1910 re her husband Ted, a waiter, who had deserted her; believe in Melbourne.  Found.  4 pages, List 96.

SMITH, Edwin Arthur, West Maitland, wrote in 1904 on behalf of his mother Amelia, living in Brunswick.  She was the widow of Peter Christian SCHMIDT, late of Stawell, and a solicitor had made enquiries about her being a beneficiary, but she hadn’t heard any more, so he asked for police help.  They find that the person sought was not her late husband.  8 pages, List 56.

SMITH, F. Seymour, solicitor, Adelaide, wrote in 1919 on behalf of Mrs. Elizabeth McLEAN of East Terrace, who was concerned about her daughter Amanda Ruth, 17 years, who went to Melbourne and hasn’t written.  Found, is an adult nurse.  Photo and 4 pages, List 69.

SMITH, Mrs Florence Rose, Collingwood, taken to Melbourne Hospital by police in 1913, when she informed them she had taken poison. Her mother was Florence STANWORTH of North Melbourne.  8 pages, List 109.

SMITH, George Goodwin Crouch.  Held up a bank in Cape Town South Africa in 1897, shot teller, then turned gun on himself.  Copy of newspaper report on file, along with somewhat gruesome photo of his head with bullet hole.  His background given; brother Harry T. is in W.A.  16 pages, List 20.

SNOWDEN, Michael Henry, murdered at Arcadia in 1881, – BRADFORD suspected, Edward HOGGARD a witness.  In 1907 Yarrawonga police sought details of the case, as both men were in the district, and the 1881 file, including a reward poster, was forwarded to them and returned.  This is a large file.  List 84.

SOLOMON, G.L., wrote from Gladstone Hotel, Millers Point NSW in 1899 re daughter Emily, who left home with Ettie BINDON for Melbourne.  Emily was divorced from jockey William WOODGATE, and left her child unprovided for. Pair found in a brothel.  11 pages, List 43.

SOMERVILLE, Alexander, Carlton, reports in 1903 that his new villa in South Melbourne has been targeted by ‘roughs’.  Local police report it is a brothel, which is a surprise to him. 6 pages List 67.

SOMERVILLE, Frank. Arrested in Newcastle NSW for larceny, under another name. Admits he is wanted for failure to pay maintenance on child of Florence Elizabeth BYRNE, born 1915. Also seduced her sister, who is pregnant to him. His parents live in Ascot Vale.  List 1.

SOMMERSGILL, Joseph, Daveyhurst, W.A., wrote in 1909.  He has received an anonymous letter that his wife and son are living with – BRADLEY, blacksmith at Newport Railway Works and asks investigation, which proves claim.  12 pages, List 88.

SPILLANE, William Stanislaus, 20yrs, born Prahran, found wandering at St Kilda, and bought to police station; ‘appears simple-minded’, then cleaned and looked after before being sent to Christian Bros. SQUIRE, Mary Elizabeth, wife of Henry, suicided at Geelong in 1900.  3 pages, List 47.

S.S. BOGONG wrecked at Marlo in 1896.  Very large and very detailed file mentions the following:  drowned were brothers George, Ernest and Edward Henry HUYSMANS, (there was a warrant out for the latter, and he had been hidden by friends/relations), John ANDERSON, Charles AISTROP/ASTROPE.  Saved were Albert Edward PRICE, J.P. GALLIENNE (Master), Leonard STEVENSON/STEPHENSON.  Local constable borrowed boat from Orbost Rowing Club and broke scull – they were reimbursed after his explanation.  A search went on for some weeks, involving local Aboriginals Andrew CHASE and W. BLAIR, and a case belonging to Edward Huysmans was found. George ROCHFORT was living with the Huysman’s mother.  A sister, Daisy DALRYMPLE, wife of John of Darlinghurst Sydney, gave permission for the case and contents to be given to Minnie HUYSMANS, who was Edward’s wife, who ‘was a woman of bad repute before her marriage and resided in a brothel’.  Months later some human remains were found by Richard and George MORGAN, while mustering cattle.  List 37.

STAFFORD, James, charged with cattle stealing in 1899.  Local police want to take 12 year old Frederick WILSON away, as he can give evidence, but this is not supported.  Wilson is a cousin of Mrs. Stafford nee DOWLING; his mother died in an asylum and his father ‘is a dissolute’ and the Staffords have given him a home.  Unflattering description of families involved.  37 pages, List 41.

STAFFORD, Richard.  Wrote from Kingston South Australia in 1907 re his daughter Mary Jane who ‘was taken away by G.G. Spain’; there is some money due to her.  She was 24 years old.  Police ascertain that she is the wife of George G. ESPAGNE/ESPAIGNE and living at Horsham.  5 pages, List 15.

STEVENS, Mrs. Margaret, wrote from 16 Mile Creek, Warra, Qld. in 1919 re husband Frederick Sylvester Stevens, who is in the Salvation Army Home, has not answered her letters, has lost memory.  Police find him, but daughter who is providing for him requests no letters be sent to wife.  4 pages, List 22.

STEVENSON, G.A., wrote from State School, Mount Taylor in 1904, re his 16½ year old son Gilbert, known as Bert, who went to the country.  His wife is in Kew Asylum and fretting as she hasn’t seen her son.  Sister Ruby is employed in Melbourne and lives there with her aunt.  Not found.  8 pages, List 34.

STEVENSON, John Barr.  Known as the ‘Australian Blondin’.  Wanted for perjury in 1896 Supreme Court case.  Found interstate.  List 4.

STEWART, Bruce, Fremantle, wrote in 1908 re brother in law George DINNIE, champion wrestler, who has left his pregnant wife there.  Found.  4 pages, List 86.

STEWART, Christopher J., wrote from the lunatic asylum Ararat in 1909, seeking his sisters Caroline F., Jessie and Maggie; has not heard from them for 3 years.  Found.  8 pages, List 87.

STEWART, Muriel, 16 years, ran away from her mother in Sydney in 1916 and came to Melbourne; claimed that her mother was leading an immoral life and requested to be placed in the Abbotsford Convent.  In 1917 her mother tried to persuade her to return home.  Mother’s sister Mrs. WILLIAMS lived at Mosman.  6 pages, List 72.

STEWART, Nora Catherine, Brunswick, reported in 1914 that she had received a threatening letter [on file] from her husband Henry, better known as Jack BARTLETT.  They separated c15 years ago; he is English, c60 years, a smelter, had been in Tasmania.  She is living with her sister Mrs SPURRIER.  13 pages, List 110.

STEWART, Violet M., Fortitude Valley, Brisbane Qld, wrote in 1917 re her husband William, released from gaol a year ago and believed in Melbourne.  His brothers Alexander S.,  and John were living in Richmond and interviewed as was sister Mrs. MOSS. 8 pages, List 72.

STILL, Rosa, alias PHALP alias Ivy WILSON, was living with Richard Leonard OLDFIELD in 1928 and quarrelled with him when he paid attention to another woman.  She alleged he damaged her car; report gives another version of event.  7 pages, List 59.

STOBIE, Mrs. J.C., Port Melbourne, complains in 1895 of frequent police visits, has never been convicted of anything.  Report states she is a woman of ‘easy virtue’.  4 pages, List 26.

STOCK, Alice, 22 years old, alleged abortion on in 1899 by ‘Dr’ William CAROLE of Rushworth, who subsequently died.  She was living with her sister Mrs. Emily LINFORD at Whroo and made a very detailed statement of the treatment she had undergone.  16 pages, List  43.

STOCKDALE near Briagolong.  Sly grog shanties kept there  by William VALLANCE and Edward HAMILTON in 1895. Thomas D. LORD wrote from Castlemaine in 1895, reporting on Hamilton.  Report states he is a friend of Vallance.  8 pages, List 28.

STOTT, Annie and daughter. Murdered by husband John at Prahran in 1903.  List 1.

STOTT, Clara Ford, attempted suicide at Brunswick in 1909.  Brief prepared, evidence taken shows parents as Clara Alice and James, and son Jonathan Bolton Stott. Mary and William DAVISON helped get her to hospital.  Ethel CORBIN an acquaintance.  13 pages, List 88.

STOTT, Minnie, wrote from Kensington, Sydney NSW in 1912 asking whether she had to return to Melbourne to take out another maintenance order against her husband James, who had not paid the amount owing.  5 pages, List 34.

STRACHAN, James; information sought by solicitors in Scotland in 1896.  He was a chemist who died in Orange NSW IN 1882, leaving a wife and one daughter.  Death certificate on file shows he was 36 years, born Scotland, married Amelia DOWN in London.  He was nephew t the late Colonel RENNIE who had died recently.  7 pages, List 39.

STRAUBE, Hugo, wrote from Scoresby in 1896 asking details of the death in childbirth of his sister Mrs. Johaan Reyhold WALTHER in Sydney; he was anxious about the other children.  8 pages, List 36.

STREATER, Mrs. A.M. Forestville, South Australia, wrote in 1907 asking that her daughter Pearlie be returned.  She is now with the family of Ernest READE at Bendigo, was with aunt Mrs MARGETTS there, but was ill-treated.  Pearlie is 17 now, has been away 5 years.  Found.  5 pages, List 82.

STRIKE, Arthur James.  Wife wrote in 1914, seeking his location; it is 8 years since he supported her.  She believes he’s in Melbourne with Rose McGRATH.  4 pages, List 112.

STRIKE, Lily. Married Edmund CHALMERS in 1894 and Henry R. HAMMERSLEY in 1896 under name of CRISTIE. Divorced from Chalmers in 1905; charged with bigamy.  List 1.

STRONGITHARM-WILKINSON, Mr. H., Brisbane, wrote in 1907 asking police to find his daughter Ethel, 22 years.  She was working on a property near Trawool, but has left there.  Details provided.  4 pages, List 81.

STROWN, K., wrote in 1900.  Her husband, correct name Fredick STRIOWSKI, left two months ago for Western Australia and she hasn’t heard. He’s German, has been a seaman, they have three children.  A second letter states she has heard from him.  7 pages, List 45.

STRUTT, O.J., dentist, Omeo, newly married, complains in 1903 of inaction of local police over anonymous letters he has been receiving.  He believes they are coming from Jessie NEILSON, with whom he had been previously friendly, but she denies it.  8 pages, List 67.

STUART, Alexander, hanged himself at Fyansford in 1896.  Not identified at first, so photo taken; still on file.  Identified as previously being in Tasmania as a mining speculator, Scottish, no relatives in colonies, c60 years, sister in Cheltenham England.  13 pages, List 36.  

STUART, Charles, North Melbourne; in 1904 asked police to find out about his brother William, convicted in NSW in 1898 and later transferred from prison to a lunatic asylum.  He was born in Sydney in 1877.  Found.  4 pages, List 56.

STUART, Kitty, Surry Hills, Sydney, wrote in 1913.  She had a baby girl she wanted someone reputable to adopt, and a Mrs E.A. THOMAS, on holiday there, took the child.  She has found that the woman has given false information and disappeared with her child.  A report states the child subsequently found in the car of Mrs Phillip WORKMAN.  9 pages, List 108.

STURGESS, William, North Melbourne, 1895, c20 years old, called an ‘audacious mendicant’ by Charity Organisation Society; is begging in the streets.  Father owns property, is separated from mother who says she cannot control William.  Report on family.  4 pages, List 26.

STYLES, Amy, attempted suicide in the Richmond police lockup in 1902.  3 pages, List 62.

SUARES, William.  Charged with failure to pay maintenance to Dept of Neglected Children for son Leslie Eric.  7 pages, List 15.

SUFFREN, John Raymond, reported missing from home at Ballarat in 1928.  He is 15 years old; photo in Grammar School uniform.  Found.  2 pages and photo.  List 58.

SULLIVAN, Mary Ann, Melbourne.  Wrote a number of letters/petitions re mitigation of her husband Joseph’s gaol sentence.  He was tried at Bendigo in 1853 for theft, and sentenced to 5 years gaol.  List 116.

SULLIVAN, P.M., Wallaroo South Australia, wrote in 1912 re newspaper report on accident to Richard Sullivan; is it his brother who left there c30 years ago, they are sons of late police Sub Inspector Richard.  Police advise it is not him.  5 pages, List 105.

SUMMERS, Rosey, 12 years old, fell off merry-go-round at St. Kilda in 1895 and hit head.  Taken to hospital by police, in company with stepfather Benjamin BREHAM.  Operators of equipment William CRUMP and Arthur BURKE interviewed, but no charges laid.  4 pages, List 25.

SUMNERS, Henry Richard, umbrella maker, Woollahra NSW, wrote in 1907 re newspaper report of accident to child Joseph SUMMERS; asks if it is his child – yes.  MLA Thomas JESSUP also writes on his behalf.  12 pages, List 70.

SUMNERS, Henry Richard, Woollahra, NSW, sought address of his wife Ada nee SHAW in 1912.  She left him there and went to Melbourne in 1902 with their child Joseph.  Found, Ada doesn’t want him to know her address.  8 pages, List 101.

SUTCLIFFE, Alick J.  Information sought by father John, Providence, Rhode Island, in 1910.  He was in Chicago at the World Fair, but hasn’t been heard from since.  They have moved several times in England, and now are in the US.  Alick is c34 years old.  Not found.  4 pages, List 41.

SUTCLIFFE, Walter F., wrote on letterhead of Gibbs Bright & Co., Sydney, asking help to trace the sister of Thomas CALLAGHAN who was ill in hospital there.  He was born in Collingwood and his sister Selina was married.  Police establish that she was married to George NICHOLAS of Yarraville, but he declines to help as he has done so in the past.  11 pages, List 49.

SUTHERLAND, Eric.  Wrote from Carlton in 1898, wanting to join police force; he was 19 years old.  1 page, List 7.

SUTHERLAND, John, native of Tasmania, 57 years, shot in W.A. in 1895.  T.L. STEWART, of Stewart & McDonald, wine merchants, asks for details to be given to his widowed mother in Collingwood.  8 pages, List 25.

SUTHERLAND, Mrs. Sarah Jane, suicided near Mornington in 1915 after being deserted by her husband William, who ran off with a widow Mrs. George BELL in 1914.  Her youngest daughter was taken in by his brother William, but in 1916 his wife wrote from Darlimurla, stating that they couldn’t keep her as they had 5 children of their own and an invalid father.  9 pages, List 77.

SUTHERLAND, Walter alias COOPER. Escaped from custody in N.S.W. in 1918, 38 yrs, French polisher, Victorian native, serving ten year sentence. Copy of letter to daughter Hilda on file. 7 pages and small photo.  List 1.
