ACTON, George Harold, Private AIF.  British Consul Cairo Egypt wrote in 1918; he had married Doris Una Emma TIMWORTH there in 1915 and they had a son in 1916.  He was discharged from the army in Melbourne, and her allowance has now stopped, and he says he can’t support her.  Previous marriage and divorce to Lilia WHITE confirmed.  6 pages, List 81.

ADAIR, Lizzie, widow of H.M. Adair, wrote from Vineland, New Jersey USA in 1894, seeking address of his brother William H. Adair.  1 page, List 30.

ADAMS, – Mrs. of Whitechapel London England wrote in 1896 re her son Lewis, who left for Australia in 1891.  He was a cigar bundler and was in delicate health.  12 pages.

ADAMS, Annie or GALLOWAY, sought by uncle William GRAY, engineer, Moffat Mills near Airdrie, Scotland in 1897.  She left for Melbourne six months ago, should have been met by her brother James; he hasn’t heard anything.  Found; hint of family disagreement.  8 pages, List 45.

ADAMS, Leon C., wrote from Victoria British Columbia in 1915 re brother G.W. Martin ROFFE, last heard of at Fitzroy. Traced.  4 pages, List 80.

ADDISON, Mrs. Jemima.  Sought by Henry J. BAKER of Grand Rapids, Marquette, Michigan in 1899.  She was his aunt, and lived in Richmond 10 years ago.  Her son Thomas, 69 years is located, and family details are given.  6 pages, List 24.

ADMES, Miss Annie of Newcastle on Tyne England wrote in 1897 re her uncle John TODD, who was from Alston Northumberland.  She is a daughter of the late Thomas who died inCumberland.  6 pages, List 4A

AHERN, John, Enrly? Co. Tipperary Ireland, wrote in 1862 re only son Michael, in police force, but he has heard he is dead.  ‘Oh!  will you in charity drop a line to a broken-hearted  distracted Father …’.  Rumour is false, son is still alive.  3 pages, List 5.

AHERN, John, emigrated from County Cork Ireland to Melbourne c1860, would now be c80 years old, believed at Haddon.  Sought by sister Mrs. Lizzie SULLIVAN, New York in 1903.  N.Y. police department wrote on her behalf.  Police establish he died in 1885; parents were Timothy and Bridget.  14 pages, List 46.

AHERN, Mrs. Thomas, Boston, Mass., USA, wrote in 1905 re John DORSEY; no details provided but police locate Patrick who states he has two sisters in Boston.  5 pages, List 44.

AHERN, Timothy, Cragg, Birdhill, Limerick, Ireland, wrote in 1907 looking for his brother Patrick, who went to Ballarat 62 years ago, would now be 82 years old.  Not found.  13 pages, List 55.

AISTRUP, Adolf.  A Dane, he was charged with embezzlement of  $2,000 from his employees in Shanghai in 1905.  A $500 reward was posted, and the notice, including his photograph, is all that is on the file.  1 page.  List 2.

AITCHISON, Hugh Francis Chartres, died at Mildura in 1916.  His relative Daisy, Dunedin New Zealand is informed and pays burial costs.  11 pages, List 55.

ALCORN, James, left Londonderry Ireland c1864 for Australia.  Eldest daughter Nancy, now Mrs. Henry Montgomery, wrote from Greene, Iowa, US in 1894.  3 pages, List 24.

ALEXANDER, Rev E.P., Stockport England, wrote re Alexander KENNEDY, hatter, who has deserted his wife and family and gone to Australia, believed in Melbourne.  File covers 1908-1911 and includes a small photo and details of his lifestyle.  17 pages, List 68.

ALEXANDER, George Thompson, prisoner in H.M. Military Prison, Woking, Surrey England in 1913, asks if he will be recompensed for rescuing 17 year old Thomas Leslie BOYD of Abbotsford when his bike was hit by a car driven by Arthur G. HEGARTY of Yarraville.  12 pages, List 64.

ALEXANDER, Louis, American, a ‘colored man’ found dead in a hut near Rokewood in 1901, destitute.  His nephew Samuel S. FRAME of Charlestown, USA, son of his sister Rosa, asks if he left any assets.  14 pages, List 40.

ALFIERI, Raffaelle, sought by the Italian Consul in 1910 on behalf of his brother.  Found.  21 pages, List 62.

ALISON, Thomas, sought by brother William of Sefton Park Liverpool England, in 1904. He had left Ireland c1884 and was a cab driver aged 56 years. 4 pages, List 15.

ALLAN, Alf. Of Nysokongaro, Wanganui New Zealand, asked police to deliver a letter to George ATKINSON of Collingwood, his wife’s father. Several letters to him remain unanswered and they haven’t heard from him for nearly three years. Police deliver letter and New Zealand police advise Allan of this. 5 pages, List 10.

ALLAN, Mrs. Alice. Taken ill at Korumburra Victoria in 1917 and sent to a Melbourne hospital. Only known relatives are a sister, the wife of William SHAW, State Collieries manager, Greymouth New Zealand, and a brother William ECKERSLEY, also in New Zealand, who are notified. 10 pages, List 6.

ALLAN, Arthur Percy, accountant, warrant issued at La Plate, Argentine; has defrauded a company there, 1912.  He is a native of Melbourne, family at St Kilda have a piano business; ALLAN & CO.  3 pages, List 72.

ALLAN, Benjamin, c19 years, sought by father W.O. Allan of Greenock Scotland in 1894.  He was in the employ of Jacobs Timber Merchant.  Found.  4 pages, List 34.

ALLAN, Mrs. Charles, nee Mary McLACHLAN, sought by U.S. Consul in 1901.  She left Glasgow in 1852 for Bendigo, was last heard of in 1865; had two children, Mary and William.  Not found.  14 pages, List 18.

ALLAN, Henry, plasterer, left Jersey Channel Islands in 1888 for Geelong.  In 1893 and 1895 Jersey official writes re his supporting his family there.  Interviewed, he refuses.  11 pages, List 28.

ALLAN, James. The clerk of Glasgow Parish Scotland wrote in 1914 re this person. He was a cabinet maker, 38 years of age, who came to Melbourne in 1912, leaving his wife and two children there. He has stopped sending maintenance to his family, and the Parish has had to do so. 8 pages, List 10.

ALLAN, William Pearson Jnr, wrote from Balclutha New Zealand in 1900 re his father of the same name who left there 12 years ago.  He was a Scot, c50 years old and a dyer.  Not found.  20 pages, List 39.

ALLARDICE, James, left Kirriemuir, Forfarshire Scotland in 1912, leaving a wife and 2 children.  In 1915 the Parish Council writes, asking him to contribute maintenance.  Robert GIRVAN who came on the same ship with him reports that he is ‘addicted to drink’.  9 pages, List 54.

ALLARDICE, Mrs Margaret of Glengate, Kirriemuir, Forfarshire Scotland, wrote in 1917 re her husband James, who left there five years ago, and since then she had to live on charity. He was 38 yrs old. 6 pages and a photograph of the couple and their two sons. List 6.

ALLCOCK, Elizabeth writes from Manchester in 1892.  Her brother William left Liverpool England when 16-17 years of age by stowing away in a ship.  He is now 30-34 years of age.  The family thought him dead, but a nephew Denis CARNEY saw him in Melbourne, and she now seeks his location.  3 pages.

ALLE, Mrs. Elizabeth, of Hamilton, Ontario Canada, wrote in 1914 re cousin Henry HALLIDAY, and wife Mary and uncle and aunt John and Margaret WOOLEY . Eventually found by police. 16 pages, List 7.

ALLEN, Ada. Wrote from Wellington New Zealand in 1916 re George HASTINGS of Lansdowne Masterton New Zealand, the father of her illegitimate female child who was born in August 1908. She has a maintenance order out on him, but he can’t be located. It is believed he has joined the Aust. Imperial Force in Qld. under the name of George HAINES. 22 pages List 6.

ALLEN, David, wrote from Newry Ireland in 1914, re William WYLIE, from Co. Down, who left Ireland c1880 for Melbourne. Wylie had worked in his hardware store. 7 pages, List 8.

ALLEN, John Frederick.  New Scotland Yard wrote in 1900 enquiring as to his antecedents.  He had applied to join the police force there.  Local police in Mildura provide a report.  3 pages, List 39.

ALLEN, Josephine, of Teignmouth Devon England, wrote re Thomas HELLER in 1903.  He was last heard from in 1897 and his mother, old and illiterate, needs financial aid.  He was 35 years old.  Found.  9 pages, List 21.

ALLEN, Stuart C., sought by mother Mrs. K. Allen, Picton, Marlborough, New Zealand in 1906; he was formerly in the Post & Telegraph Office there, won money in Tatts lottery and left for Australia, became associated with a  married woman and both were drinking heavily.  His father was formerly a magistrate in New Zealand.  Very detailed background given, and he is found.  11 pages, List 50.

ALLISON, Frederick Allison, formerly Inspector of Works & Measures, West Ham, London, left there in 1891 and hasn’t been heard of since.  Mrs. Amelia Allison c/- Anstey & Sons, Plaistow, London UK, wrote in 1895.  Has heard he shot himself in Melbourne; no trace.  5 pages, List 28.

ALLISON, Lillian. Nurse at Military Hospital, Leeds England, wrote in 1916 re her brother John William Allison, who arrived in Australia in 1913. Family had not heard from him. Found. 7 pages, List 9.

AMBROSE, Frank, wrote from Boston Mass., in 1904 re Michael and Maurice Ambrose, who left for Australia in the 1850s.  Their brother Thomas last heard from them about 40 years ago when they were at Amherst.  Family found.  7 pages, List 22.

AMBROSE, Mrs Rose, of Rochester New York US, wrote in 1911 re her uncle Thomas SHORT, who left Ireland when a young man and came to Melbourne. Police interview two people of that name, but neither are the person sought. 6 pages, List 13.

AMERICAN CONSUL, Melbourne, wrote in 1914. He had received a letter from Mrs. H.B. CLARKENSON re the death of her husband in Melbourne in 1913. Police find he used the name Henry Laurence VERNARD but confessed his real name to his doctor before his death. He had been living with Maria WILLIAMS. 9 pages, some torn, List 10.

AMERICI, Ugo, son of Leopoldo, born 1868 Perugia Italy, said to be in Melbourne under name Scotti MANCINELLI, was sought by the Italian consul Melbourne in 1916. Police interview Robert MATICI, who gives details of his scandalous actions some years ago, but no trace of him found. 6 pages, List 8.

ANDERSON, A.J. of Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, wrote in 1905 re Maurice MEEKER, who left c45 years ago for Australia. Relatives haven’t heard from him for 5 years and his 83 year old brother Ogden is anxious to hear from him, so the writer is enquiring on his behalf. 4 pages, List 15.

ANDERSON, F.S. [Frederick Signor], died of wounds in 1915.  W.A. MOSSMAN of Hastings New Zealand, writes on behalf of his father, seeking his belongings which are held by Mrs. BROWN, licensee of the Britannia Hotel Melbourne.  She refuses to hand over until the Will is produced.  17 pages, List 54.

ANDERSON, F.S. killed at Dardanelles.  Sister S.N. Anderson, Petone, Wellington New Zealand, queries delay in his property going to his fiancee Miss E. HARDING, 1915.  7 pages, List 79.

ANDERSON, Rev. Irvine K., Rector, Tavy St. Mary, Devon, England, wrote in 1905 re Roger DOIDGE, living near Ballarat. Some of his parishioners require a statutory declaration that he is still alive; ‘a lease difficulty’. Police supply. 4 pages, List 12.

ANDERSON, James.  Prime Minister’s Office requests information on this man in 1905, has had a request from Johannesburg solicitors. He was a disinfectant manufacturer inMelbourne in 1890s. Police find he bigamously married Blanche H. MOON in Melbourne.  4 pages, List 18.

ANDERSON, John B., painter, wrote from Germiston, Johannesburg, South Africa in 1899.  He had received an anonymous letter about the behaviour of his wife and asks confirmation.  Report confirms claim but his kept from him.  5 pages, List 36.

ANDERSON, Peter of Peiter Martizburg Natal South Africa wrote in 1908 re his uncle and aunt Andrew and Janet BORLAND, children of Andrew Borland, deceased, born in Newmilns, Ayrshire Scotland.  Janet had sailed from Scotland to Australia in 1854; Andrew was an engineer, he had left the Cape Colony for Australia in 1882.  10 pages.  List 2.

ANDREWS. F., Supt., Sheffield, Yorkshire England, wrote in 1911 on behalf of his mother in law Mrs Emma COCKER formerly GLOSSOP nee WILSON, who sought her relatives in Melbourne.  Her father Thomas Wilson, carpenter, left Manchester in 1854, with two daughters, Elizabeth and Ann, and more children were born in Melbourne.  Elizabeth married R. ARGLES, Napoleon, solicitor, Paris, France, wrote in 1912 re Auguste QUEMAR or his descendants; he was born in France in 1809 and in Australia by 1855.  He subsequently asked for details of Charles Francois CUVET and his wife Catherine nee ROVE and various members of the ROVE and BLIVET families.  Descendants traced.  16 pages, List 72.

ARGNANI, Auguste. Died Dunolly Victoria 1880. Italian consul in Melbourne receives private papers, including inventory of estate, for friends in Italy. 10 pages, List 5.

ARLINGTON, George Harwood, sought by wife in Handsworth, Birmingham England in 1916. He ran off with Mrs. Florence Ada TEMPLE, taking all his money. His estate has been made bankrupt, and their house sold, leaving wife and child ‘without a penny’. He is a ‘very famous cricketer’ has played for two counties. Police find the couple using the name ASTLEY running a hotel in Melbourne. Photo of him on file. 22 pages, List 6.

ARMENIAN PRIESTS.  Harantin Garabet BALAKIAN of Melbourne, while in New Zealand in 1916, reports that two Assyrians, Simon ELIAS and Deacon J. WESLEY are posing as Armenian priests and collecting money and are now going to Australia.  A very detailed report on the two who have travelled the world doing this and are ordered to leave Australia.  Large file, List 53.

ARMITAGE, George, formerly of Manchester England, last heard of at Richmond in 1891, sought by  R.W. KNOWLES of Carnforth England in 1896, his wife is a sister.  Found.  5 pages, List 34.

ARMSTRONG, A.W., Kensington London, wrote in 1901 re his uncle Edward O’CONNELL, native of Athlone Ireland, whose father William O’CONNELL, MD, died in 1869 and mother Bedelia Mary nee CUSACK died in 1875.  O’Connell was in the Irish police force, and last heard from in Victoria in 1872.  1 page, List 4A.

ARMSTRONG, Alex, Gaolor, H.M. Prison Invercargill New Zealand, wrote two letters in 1905 re daughter Mrs M.E.M. GARDINER who was travelling to W.A. to find her husband David Black GARDINER alias Herbert BLACK, mining engineer.  This is an incomplete file of 4 pages, LIST 81.

ARMSTRONG, F., British Consul, Milan, wrote in 1901 re two young men named JONAS who had defrauded him and other British officials.  Father interviewed and paid amounts owing.  5 pages, List 40.

ARMSTRONG, Mrs. Helen, Bucks Cottage Workers Agency, Olney, Bucks, England, wrote in 1915 re lace sample sent to G.S. Holmes of Kew, which has not been paid for nor returned. Letterhead states: An institution established to promote and revive the making of pillow lace in the rural villages of Buckinghamshire …. Police establish he is now serving with the Expeditionary Forces, but his parents return lace. 7 pages, List 8.

ARMSTRONG, James, of Oneonta, San Diego, California wrote in 1892 regarding William BALFOUR, formerly a constable at Roscommon near Athlon [sic] Ireland c1860, afterwards in Victorian police force at Avoca.  Armstrong had served under ‘General George Brown the Old Hero’, and wanted to contact Balfour re ‘family affairs’.  2 pages. List 2.

ARMSTRONG, William, New York, USA, wrote in 1902 re his uncle William Samuel COX, last heard of in Melbourne some years ago.  Police find relatives. 5 pages, List 44.

ARNELL, Mrs. E., Barry Docks, South Wales, wrote in 1902 re her brother William HELLINGS, 48 years, ship’s carpenter, sailed for Melbourne and hasn’t been heard of since.  Not found.  6 pages, List 44.

ARNOLD, George of Kew Gardens London England, wrote in 1893.  His brother and another young single man of the London Police Force wish to join Victorian force.  His brother is 24 years old, and has had two years in the police force there.  1 page.

ARNOLD, George of Point St Charles, Montreal, Canada, conductor on the Grand Trunk Railway there, wrote in 1893.  His father is James ARNOLD, and his father was Robert, and his mother Harriet LONG.  His father had six brothers, William, Edward, John, Robert, Joseph (only 5 named) and three sisters, Sarah, Isabella and Jane.  Now he is very sick and always speaking of his siblings.  George asks if there are any ARNOLD or McLOUGHLIN families in Melbourne.  2 pages, List 3.

ARON, Felix. Chief Constable, Birmingham England wrote in 1917 re this man. His wife Emma ARON of Elsternwick Victoria has written to the Chief Constable, asking whether he is still employed at Austin Motor Works there, as she has not received support from him and is now penniless. He claims to have sent money. 2 pages, List 6.

ARTHUR, Mr. W., of Southall, Middlesex, England, wrote in 1920 re his daughter Mrs. W. WILLIAMS who was being badly treated by her husband.  There were two children, but one child she had had before marriage to Williams.  5 pages.

ARTHUR, William, sought by brother John ‘practical horseshoer’ of Pueblo Colorado USA in 1895; is in Victorian police force.  6 pages, List 28.

ARTHUR, William MacGeorge.  Information sought by wife, c/- Mrs. ALLUM, Corn Hithe, Wrentham, Suffolk ENGLAND in 1902.  He was an engineer and had deserted her and their baby.  His mother was in Dunedin, New Zealand.  Found.  10 pages, List 43.

ASH, Mrs. Margaret, wife of Frank, wrote in 1892 from Providence Rhode Island, re her brother John TRACY, whom she has not seen in 29 years.  1 page, List 3.

ASHMAN, Mrs. Emily, of Seattle Washington USA, wrote in 1904 re Absalom and Charles DATSON who left Redruth Cornwall c40 years ago.  Absalom is her stepfather and Charles is son.  She was formerly Emily MIDDLETON.  10 Pages, List 4.

ASHURST, Mrs. Margaret of Wigan Lancashire England wrote in 1901 re her husband Robert, whom she married in 1881; they have 3 children.  He has married again and is legally married to her.  Robert, a police constable, is forced to resign from the force.  20 pages.  List 4A.

ATHERTON, Ernest, sought by Chief Constable, Norwich England in 1917. His wife Ada Sophia Annie Atherton is now destitute and has applied for relief. He has failed to send maintenance. He is 43 years, a spindle machinist, and the ends of some fingers are missing. Victoria police find him at Diamond Creek. 4 pages, List 6.

ATKINSON, Edwin, sought by Australia House London England, in 1913, on behalf of his wife W.M. of Bush Hill Park Middlesex. He is 38 years of age, was a greengrocer, had been in Victoria since 1911. 15 pages, List 14.

ATKINSON, John, tanner, deserted wife Jane Ann and six children at Maryport, Cumberland England in 1912.  They had been separated for three years; he has now stopped paying maintenance.  Found, he states he will support the five children with his parents. 7 pages, List 74.

ATKINSON, Mr. Justice, Snr Pusine Judge, British Guinana, wrote in 1895 re Mrs. Margaret SPANN and her daughters; a relative of his in the U.K. has become entangled with one of the daughters, asks report on their background, which is given.  5 pages, List 28.

AUVRAY, C., Leyton, North East London, England, wrote in 1913 re the children of John MATTHEWMAN, who had ‘built the first brick house in Fitzroy’.  His wife is a relative of the Matthewman family and they intend to settle in Melbourne.  Son found.  5 pages, List 74.

AVENELL, William. Chief Constable Toronto Canada wrote in 1915 that his wife Mabel hasn’t received any maintenance for herself and child for the past year. AVERA, G.H.  Wrote from Byron, Georgia USA in 1905 seeking information on someone of that name who went from North Carolina to Australia and died there, leaving millions of dollars; thinks this is a relation.  5 pages, List 21.

AVERY, George. His wife wrote two letters from Custom House, London England, in 1913. He had left her and their two children in 1911, was a seaman; she had heard he had changed his name to LAMBERT. 15 pages, List 9. Further letter, 1914, she is a cripple, both her parents are dead. Avis absconded with the jewellery, met up with his friend Charles PATWORTH and disappeared. The pair had recently arrived in Victoria. Horace’s father, living in Chelsea London, was written to by Nicholls, and was appalled by what had happened and disowned his son. 13 pages, List 15.

BAILEY, Mrs. E. of Manor Park, London UK wrote in 1914 re her husband Henry Samuel. Encloses photo and marriage certificate which shows they were married in 1904 in Essex and her maiden name was FAIRWEATHER. He has left her with 4 children, aged 9, 7 2 and 8 months, and no means ‘and I don’t now how to keep them…he as never trouble over me ore his children…’ He left there in July. Police find him and he claims he has been sending money to them and is arranging for them to be bought to Melbourne. Police letter reporting this, and enclosing photo and certificate, is returned with ‘gone away’ on envelope. 8 pages, List 7.

WOLFE, lawyer, Mountain Home Idaho USA who was acting for an elderly lady there (unnamed).  James was once a mining man, brother George in Melbourne 20-30 years ago.  Police find a James in Sydney but he is the wrong person; he states that a James, formerly a sharebroker in Ballarat died at Temora in 1894, aged 68 years, was born Pensnettt, Staffs, UK, married Mary CROCKETT and later Margaret Antisill SHORT.  Children from both marriages.  12 pages, List 31.

BANNERTH, F. of Kensington London, wrote in 1898 re his/her aunts Sophia RYAN, a widow, c75yrs old and her sister Mary c68yrs old, who married firstly Thomas HILL and had a son Thomas (was in Customs department) and secondly a draper (unnamed).  The writer was suffering bad health and anxious to contact relatives.  5 pages, List 20.

BANVARD, Mrs. J. of Rawalpindi, India, wrote in 1900. She visited Melbourne the previous year to arrange artistes for her theatrical company, ran short of money and pledged gold watch. Subsequently gave ticket and money to redeem watch to A. MARTIN of Elsternwick, who was shipping horses to India, but the watch hasn’t turned up yet. Police find Martin who states he gave the watch to J.B. ARNOLD of Bombay, who has since died. 9 pages, List 18.

BARCLAY, Cumming, born 1875 Peterhead England, son of John and Mary nee PATERSON, married 1896 Scotland to Mary Ann RAE.  She is now in the Royal Asylum at Aberdeen, and Peterhead Parish Funds wrote in 1916, asking police to get him to pay maintenance.  Found to have enlisted, and has 3 children by Sarah BELL.  7 pages, List 53.

BARFORD, Val. Thomas, of Roade, Northampton England wrote in 1916. He was one of the executors of the late James BARFORD, who left a small legacy to F.W. BARFORD, who was believed to be in Melbourne. 6 pages, List 6.

BARKER, Mrs. Louisa of Kidsgrove, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire wrote in 1914 re her uncle Thomas STEVENSON of Sandhurst [Bendigo]. BEALE, John, solicitor, Auckland New Zealand, wrote in 1914 re George or William DICKINSON, 27 years, who used to work on the trams in Melbourne, and claimed to be a widower, with one son. Dickinson has left his client pregnant, after promising to marry her. BELL, James, of Greenhill, Hownam, Kelso N.B. wrote in 1892; has seen a report of the death of a William YOUNG in Victoria, described as a native of Carmunnock Lanarkshire, 2 years, engine driver.  Asks if this could be his wife’s uncle of the same name, who left Cumnock Ayrshire many years ago.  His sister Ann YOUNG or McHUTCHON is still alive.  Reply states appears to be a different person.  6 pages.  List 2.

BERG, Arnold, of Wellington New Zealand, writes in 1907 re a young woman who is staying at his place and has recently given birth. She claims to be a Mrs. GILLIE, he believes her real name is Annie ROCHESTER, born in Inglewood Victoria, and single. He seeks confirmation, and will ask her to leave if this is the case. Local Inglewood police confirm, but say that she is respectable, she shouldn’t be hounded for a mistake, and Berg shouldn’t be told the truth. New Zealand police agree with this. 4 pages, List 10.

BERTRAM, Mrs. Clara. New Scotland Yard wrote in 1907, enclosing a letter they had received from Clara, who lived in Melbourne. She sought their help in tracing her husband Conrad Augustus Bertram, who had deserted her and their son. They state that they only deal with criminal matters, but Vic. Police take up the case and he is eventually arrested. Conrad left her in 1903 and went to W. Aust with Alice Margaret CORDWELL, and now had a daughter Elsie by her. His father is E.E. Bertram of Leadenhall St., London, his mother lives in South Kensington London, and his sister is Mrs. Fred SHORTER. 22 pages, List 13.

BIRCH, Mrs. Florence, wrote from Essex England in 1907 re her husband William James Birch, who was shipwrecked off the coast of Dunedin, but saved and taken to Sydney.  She had last heard from him in 1906, when he was ill.  They were married in Albany WA and have 5 children.  He was supposed to be going back to England, working a ship, but never arrived.  His brother is Richard and his nephew James is in the Victorian police force.  She writes again subsequently, has heard he is living with Alma KING, who keeps a hotel in Sydney.   Nephew James is asked in 1909 and says he believes he is on his way, via Calcutta.  19 pages, List 33.

BLACK, James William; information on sought by Chief Constable Manchester England in 1915. Black wrote to him re his wife’s family stealing £300 of his money left in a building society there 18 years ago. Records show the building society closed in 1885. BLACKWELL, Henry of Cornwall England wrote in 1892 re Arthaniesus Blackwell.  About 24 years ago his father at St. Just near Lands End, had a letter from Australia, relating to money and property at Mt. Blackwood Victoria left to him by Arthaniesus Blackwell in Australia.  His father returned the letter as no relation, but Henry, the only living son, wants to revive the claim now.  Police find that a John Blackwell was at Mt. Blackwood years ago, but not there now. 6 pages.  List 2.

His brother Benjamin is in Victoria, but claims he doesn’t know where he is. Wonderful description of the child who wins a baby prize and is a ‘Nestles’ baby, with a 25″ chest measurement. 8 pages, photo, List 7.

BRADBURY, Mrs. E., of Cheltenham Gloucestershire England wrote in 1917 re her husband Percy BRADBURY, who left there in 1913. She hasn’t heard since 1916, when he was living in Richmond Victoria. Police ascertain he has left there, but are unsuccessful in tracing him. 12 pages, some damaged, List 6.

BRADBURY, Pte. J., 3rd Leicestershire Regiment, Partington Yorkshire England, wrote in 1915. His original letter is missing from the file, but it concerned his daughter Emma who had emigrated to Melbourne. He enclosed a letter he had received from Mrs. Cassie KIRK, telling him that Emma had married her son William, had miscarried and was pregnant again, and the couple were very poor. Police confirmed this statement, but the letter sent back to Bradbury was returned, and is on the file, as is Mrs. Kirk’s letter. 8 pages, List 7.

BRADSHAW, Richard. Wrote in 1897 re his half brother John ALDERMAN of Bedfordshire England, who left there in 1852 for the Victorian goldfields. He had advertised in Melbourne papers for him, and was suspicious of a response. He believes Alderman was a wealthy man, but police find otherwise. 15 pages, List 9.
