ABANDONED newly born female child left at Sebastian Railway Station (near Raywood) in 1896.  Mrs. Henrietta MEYERS paid to take care of it until taken before the Bench and committed to government care.  Alexander ALLISON, head teacher, and his wife, apply to adopt the baby, which is agreed to, and it is given the name Jessie ALLISON.  11 pages, List 37.

ABBOTT, John William, furniture dealer, sought by wife N. in 1904.  Found.  4 pages, List 34.

A’BECKETT, Thomas, (Judge), complains that his fruit and vegetables are being stolen from his garden in Armadale.  4 pages, List 21.

ABEL, Talbot, wrote from Wakool Crossing NSW in 1912 re his brother Frank Beard Moore Abel, 27 years; has heard he was killed.  No trace of event.  5 pages, List 32. 

ADAMS, Martha, wife of John, died at Bullarook as result of abortion in 1898.  Copy of inquest file and police report.  Witnesses:  Martha LITTLEHALES, Mary DINNING, Dr. John Kildahl RICHARDS, Dr. William MORRISON, Dr. Henry Robert SALMON, Dr. Edward CHAMPION. Body exhumed.  61 pages, List 17.

AFGHAN HAWKERS. 1890 listing of.

AH WAH, Annie, 6 years. Committed by Ballarat Bench to Industrial School, 1883. File re difficulties in doing so.

AH YUK, Mary. File re cost of burying her, father Ah Yuk who was destitute, 1880. 3 pages, List 2.

AITCHISON, Hugh F.C. sought by Mrs. W.A. MINCHAM of Meningie in 1905; his family in New Zealand are anxious.  11 pages, List 23.

AITKEN, Thomas, farmer, Rockbank, reports theft of 36 hens and a rooster in 1919.  His neighbour – KELLY, caught offender.  Covered wagon made by COFFEY BROS, who eventually take it and horse as L. RUSSELL, who hired it cannot be found.  Previous owner was C. GOOD.  21 pages, List 27.

AKHURST & CO.  Melbourne, report a woman is getting coal delivered by them, but not paying for it.  She has done this several times, using the names of Mary Ann CONLON/CONNOLLY/KNOLLY/HOWARD.  Police find it is Caroline WILKINSON, who married William John CONLON, a letter carrier, in 1908.  9 pages, List 4. 

ALBACUTYA STATION.  Skeleton found at nearby Blooigal in 1896 by boundary rider John McMARTIN.  Dingoes had scattered the bones; those found gathered up and an inquest held.  Witnesses George EVERARD and Herman HEINRICH.  6 pages, List 29.

ALBERTO, James.  Real name James CLYDE.  File re finding his relatives after his death in 1898.  His mother was Mrs. Lydia WALKER, and his brothers were Andrew and David.  Incomplete file.  14 pages, List 7.

ALBERT PARK LAKE. Pieces of male body found, 1906; pathology report and sample of pubic hair on file.

ALCOCK, T.H.  Wrote from Isis Downs Qld in 1907, asking police to help get his 20 year old son on board ship in Melbourne and sent to him there.  His wife and family live in Carlton.  Police find son is of weak intellect and unfit to travel alone.  6 pages, List 23.

ALLDER, Edgar Claude Bassell.  Sought by NSW solicitor in 1899, last heard of near Birchip.  Found.  8 pages, List 3.

ALLAN, John, of Enfield House, Launceston, Tasmania, wrote in 1902 re the character of Edward HAMILTON, who was boarding with him and accused of stealing money.  He thinks he is innocent.  Police report he is from Bendigo and is respectable.  3 pages, List 21.

ALLANSON, Charles Albert, carpenter, sought by mother in Collingwood in 1898; last heard from in Omeo 5 years ago.  Not found.  5 pages, List 21.

ALLIS, Phillip.  Wife asks police for assistance in finding him in 1865, he deserted her; was a former member of the police force. 3 pages, List 4.

ALLMAN, George Henry. Wife Lydia Jane writes in 1918; they were married in England 31 years ago, he has never supported her and she now seeks this; she is now living in Tasmania. He is found in NSW, married to a Miss MEALEY, aged 61 yrs and deaf, and supported by his wife. 5 pages.  CONNECTION FOUND.

AMBROSE, Fanny.  Wrote from Geelong in 1898 re W. PHILLIPS, who was boarding with her and claimed to have money in Ballarat banks.  He was 70-80yrs of age, and hadn’t paid her.  ‘I have had to nurse him as a child … and I wont my money if he as any’.  Police report back, but she has moved to Corowa NSW, so file follows her there.  13 pages, List 7.

ANARCHIST’S CLUB. 1886 Report on, and copy of pamphlet.

ANDERSON, Caroline, wife of Andrew, Footscray, and mother of Harold 15 years and Agnes 25 years, took poison in 1912, and was found by son.  Admitted to hospital and Brief prepared for charge of attempting suicide, but  prosecution dropped.  12 pages, List 34.

ANDERSON, George, 59 Laity St., Richmond.  Anonymous complaint that his 6 children are neglected; report on.  4 pages, List 18.

ANDERSON, James, wrote from Corryong in 1895, complaining that alcohol prohibition order on his brother William of Towong was breached by local publican Alfred MASTERS.  Witnesses were William DUGGAN, James NUGENT and William HOLZIGAL or TAYLOR.  Case never went to court.  8 pages, List 28.

ANDERSON, P.F., owner of 4 Colvin Grove Hawthorn, complains that tenants at No. 2 are annoying his tenants and neighbours; petition from neighbours in support of his claim.  HO NAN and wife are tenants.  5 pages, List 23.

ANDERSON, Plant.  Writes from Melbourne in 1897 re brother George Arthur Anderson, who sailed for South Africa after being in the military force.  He hasn’t heard for some months, and asks if report of a murder in Kent England is his brother; no.  8 pages, List 20

ANDREW, Elizabeth, wrote from Darlinghurst NSW in 1920 regarding her relatives MITCHELL of Richmond.  Nieces traced.  6 pages, List 24.

ANDREWARTHA, Alice. Arrested by police 1915; drunkard, neglected children. Husband John in army.

ANDREWS, Albert, chemist, Beaufort, charged with appropriating funds as administrator of deceased son of William James VALE, miner, Waterloo, 1896.  Andrews had 8 children, a brother Richard in Beaufort and a brother Frank in Sydney, where he was thought to have gone.  Faded photo on file (see instructions re copying of photos.)  36 pages, List. 36.

ANDREWS, George Douglas.  Deserted wife M. and their 5 children in Adelaide c1906.  She writes in 1910 and solicitors write in 1912, seeking him.  His real name is George RICHARDS.  Her brother Joseph GOODWIN of Ballarat interviewed, states the couple lived in Ballarat and a child is buried there.  He is not found.  10 pages, List 32. 

ANGLIN, John. Murdered wife, file on his background.

ANGOVE, Serena Lila.  Mother Mary reports her missing from Bendigo in 1920.  Domestic servant, 16 years, left employee, went to Melbourne and used a different name.  Not found.  14 pages, List 24.

ANGRAVE, George.  Sought by wife Annie, whom he had left destitute in Adelaide in 1899.  Found.  4 pages, List 3.

ANNIS, Robert. Left his family in Sydney and ran off with Mary HOFFMAN in 1902. Found in Melbourne running a hotel, with Mary posing as his wife.

ANSELL, Mabel Ronica. Investigation into possible abortion on, at Collingwood in 1919. 5 pages.

ANSON, Michael, Emu Creek, Bendigo, asks police in 1895 to find out if the J. Anson who died in Bourke N.S.W. is his son – no.  File includes report on the death.  17 pages, List 28.

ANTI CONSCRIPTION MEETINGS.  Report on actions of Mrs. BAINES of Socialist Party and East Melbourne resident W.P. McMAHON, 1917.  8 pages, List 3.

ANTISELL, Eliza, wife of Richard of Vine Hotel Richmond, taken by police to Watch House at husband’s request.  File re court case, 1870.  18 pages, List 30.

APPLINGTON, Alfred.  Reported missing from Mitchelldale near Dargo in 1898, believed drowned.  Mother believed to be at Ninnitybelle near Cooma, c/- Hugh McDONALD.  Police there interview Hugh who says Alfred is his son, real name Alexander McDonald.  [Note that the death certificate was never amended, and is in the name of Applington.]  8 pages,  List 21.

ARAN, John, died at Springvale in 1896 aged 81 years.  Police called on to arrange burial and report finding his original British Army discharge papers; had been in the Rifle Brigade, discharged 1853, born Denton, Darlington, Co Durham.  Local rumour says he had property, but this prove false.  23 pages, List 30.

ARARAT.  Fire at Crown Hotel,  in 1895, licensee Mrs. Ellen MULLINS, owner Mrs. Sarah Jane THOMAS .  6 pages, List 26.

ARCHER, Alfred. Murdered William James MATTHEWS at Strathmerton in 1898; found guilty and hanged. He had lived with Julia GROVES for some time. Her brother Philip John CANTLON mentioned. Dispute over reward etc. Very large file.

ARENTS, Louis.  Belgian Consul in Melbourne seeks his whereabouts on behalf of relatives.  Found.  8 pages, List 23.

ARMFIELD, E. Constable. Charged with misconduct towards Hannah McALEESE and Agnes MATTEI in 1900; reduced in rank and transferred. Large file, List 2.

ARMY MUTINY.  Report of 1918 mutiny in 3rd Division Ammunition Column at Weincourt France and later at General BIRDWOOD’s headquarters, involving Gunner Arthur WOODS, (solicitor, Victoria) Drivers FIADOUX (from Adelaide), EVANS, (blacksmith, South Australia), FRUEDENSTEIN (farmer, NSW) and H. ELLIOT (tram conductor, Sydney, leader in 1915 tram strike).  Police asked to identify Woods, who is believed to have returned to Victoria, and report on his ‘Bolshevik’ tendencies.   5 pages, List 3.

ARNOLD, Sarah. Quarrelled with husband William and took poison at North Melbourne, 1915.

ARTHUR, child born 1898 at Thorpdale, died soon after and buried by father.  Not registered, report on, 15 pages, List 19.

ASHBY, William C.  Wrote from Ravensthorpe W.Australia in 1904, seeking W.G. LUCAS and his his daughter Norah Lavinia LUCAS.  Her married her sister but she died shortly after marriage.  He wanted Norah, who was 17 years old, to go there and marry him, although they had never met.  11 pages, List 14.

ASHCROFT, William.  Reports his 12 years old son John has been missing for 12 days.  5 pages, List 18.

ASKWITH, Mrs. J.  Wrote a number of letters in 1900 re loss of property when she moved from Melbourne to Stockman, Big River Marysville in 1900.  Local man James J. DUCKWORTH also wrote; she was 80 years old.  Ernest KELSON, c40 years suspected, and his background given.  24 pages, List 14.

ATKINSON, James. Deserted wife Lily in Port Melbourne, 1898.

AVERY, Henry.  Writes from Eaglehawk in 1864, complaining of interference of Sgt. RICHARDS in his attempt to purchase land.  4 pages, List 4.

BACKSHALL, Florence, 12 years old, daughter of Michael J., assistant railway guard in South Australia, was given away by him in 1895 to a Mr. NEWTON who advertised, wishing to adopt a young girl.  The family boarded with a Mrs KAESEHAGAN in Adelaide, and she subsequently received a letter from a Mrs. CLAREHUGH of St. Kilda, who wrote that Newton had abandoned the girl in her boarding house.  11 pages, List 28.

BAFFICO, Domenico.  Italian Consul in Melbourne sought details of the property he left after his death in 1877.  5 pages, List 5.

BAKER, F.A. (Rev.)  Writes from Koroit in 1865 on behalf of a woman who married Thomas GREGSON in 1852.  He left for the diggings shortly afterwards and has never been heard of again.  She wishes to marry someone she has been living with, but seeks confirmation of Gregson’s death.  5 pages, List 4.  

BAKER, Seymour. Left wife and daughter at Carisbrook and went to Western Australia prior to 1899. Has now stopped sending maintenance, and wife believes he is living with another woman. Police find a Miss PAGE is with him. 10 pages, List 2.

BAKER, William, discharged from A. Battery, Albert Park in 1895, formerly in Royal Artillery, c38 years.  Has equipment with him and is required to return it.  Not found.  14 pages, List 26.

BAMBRIDGE, Emily, in service with Mr. WILKINSON, MLA, asks police in 1895 if Henry Bambridge, injured in a mining accident in Qld is her father, who left in 1886.  Police confirm it is him.  6 pages, List 28.

BANFIELD, Edward.  Wrote from W.A. in 1905 seeking information on his father Henry’s will.  He had died at Preston.  5 pages, List 10.

BANK OF VICTORIA, Bendigo.  Large file on 1905 case in which Ian, son of manager John William ALLAN is shot in ear by supposed robber.  Police interview Alick Kerr, Louis Mueller, Allan’s niece Mollie Allan and Teresa Allan and conclude that he shot himself, although his father refuses to accept this.  List 3.

BANTON, Sarah.  Living with John McELHINEY at Korumburra in 1899.  Stillborn child buried in background; prosecuted.  11 pages, List 23.

BARBER, Robert.  Died in Melbourne in 1902.  Mrs. Lucy Barber writes from Albury asking if this is her husband who left her 6 years ago.  Police report he was 55 years old, an architect, had a wife and family in Perth, W.A.  8 pages, List 19.

BARFOOT, Laura Ellen. Married at Deniliquin NSW in 1877 to John McMAHON, brother of Thomas Middleton McMahon, who is in gaol for assault on a child. Claim marriage is a sham. CONNECTION FOUND.

BARKER, Clarence Cecil alias BARNETT. Charged with abduction of Alice SHORT at Narromine NSW in 1919, also charged with wife desertion. Native of Macquarie Plains, 25 yrs, motor mechanic and engineer; fingerprints on file. 21 pages.  

BARKLY MANSIONS ST. KILDA.  Anonymous letter in 1918 from ‘wounded wife’ claims a Mrs. FORD living there is a prostitute.  Owner is Ruby Maud DAVIS, widow of Samuel Brasmere DAVIS who died in 1916.  She rents out rooms.  Police report on interviews of a number of women including JARVIS, (who had had an illegitimate child),WESTLAKE, MYERS and HAYNES, one of whom ‘removed her drawers and threw them at the Constable’s head’.  11 pages, List 3. CONNECTION FOUND

BARLOW, Robert Henry.  Left Kerang for Western Australia in 1896.  In 1898 his wife asks police to find him; she and the four children are destitute.  6 pages, List 7.

BARNES, Agnes.  Wrote from Townsville in 1897, has seen a report about a John Barnes killed in Victoria; asks if this is her husband who left home some months ago.  They have a six year old daughter.  Police ascertain it is not her husband; in the meantime he returns home.  8 pages, List 6.

BARNES, John.  Formerly organist for the Union Church, Caulfield, reported by John CHAMBERS in 1880 as acting strangely; handwritten and published letters of his on file.  He is a music teacher, lives with second wife and family, c55 years.  15 pages, List 4.

BARNWELL, William. American negro, c55 years, died near Berlin Victoria in 1881, destitute. File re sale of his effects. 8 pages, List 2.

BARRETT, Herbert, sought by mother Mrs. FELTUS of Kapunda South Australia in 1896.  He was 30 years, had been at Alberton and said he would send for her to join him, but she’s heard nothing.  She is a widow.  Not found.  21 pages, List 37. 

BARTEL, Lydia Harriet.  File re her death in 1906.  Suffered from convulsions, died before she could be admitted to Beechworth Asylum.  Testimony of husband, Dr. Cleaver WOODS and nurse Mrs. PINNAGER on file.  No inquest necessary.  10 pages, List 4.

BARTELLE, Gladys, Leslie SMITH and ‘Little May Victoria’, all child performers at Bijou and  Theatre Royal Melbourne in 1895, were in breach of law.  Report on each.  9 pages, List 26.

BASSEMIR, Tulins.  Writes from Liverpool Concentration Camp, NSW in 1917 concerning his belongings.  4 pages, List 13.

BASSETT, Philip Henry, Muckleford; applies to join police in 1905, but can’t produce birth certificate, never registered.  2 pages, List 23.

BATTY, Margaret.  Sudden death at Geelong in 1899, aged 72 years.  Report on.  4 pages, List 17.

BAUDIN, Peter alias BELLAMY, charged with burglary in 1896.  Sydney police believe he is really Peter BLANCHARD, associated with Louis PATARD, and he is extradited.  10 pages, List 31. 

BAUER, Bernard. Diamond dealer, murdered 1907. Files 1907-8, 1910, 1917.  Names involved: James POTTER; Mrs. HOLMES; ANDERSON, Michael BRENNAN, BRIDLAND.

BAUER, Frank,  18 years, jeweller’s apprentice, sought by father F., in Adelaide, 1905, 18 pages, List 8.

BEAUCHAMP, Elizabeth. Eloped from Major’s Plains with Thomas GREATOREX; accidentally killed in 1878, and death certificate issued in name of Beauchamp . He subsequently reveals her real name was BROWN, and she had left her family for him. Note that the death certificate was never amended to Brown.  Marriage certificate of 1873  of Elizabeth NEWMAN and Francis BROWN on file, as is photo of her.

BEAUMONT, – Mrs.  A widow, 70 years, she died suddenly at Leopold in 1902 after dining with family of Thomas Edward McMILLAN; no suspicious circumstances.  2 pages, List 18.

BECHER, C.H.  A solicitor in Sale, he wrote to police in 1913 regarding a Cremonensis violin (1807) that was lost by his sister Mrs. IRVING while on a visit.  19 pages, List 8.

BECK, J.W. Chemist; confidential enquiry made for him at South Australia by Vic. Police; had come from Western Australia, 1901. No reason for enquiry given. 7 pages, List 2.

BECKETT, John, alias Leslie STEELE, charged with imposition on farmers William H. PATINSON and Neil McArthur DRYSDALE of Balook near Traralgon in 1905.  Police establish he is identical with person who was tried for murder of Robert William SMALL in Tasmania in 1897.  Parents old residents of Skipton district.  Tas. criminal photo on file, but faded.  Admitted to lunatic asylum.  22 pages, List 17.

BEECH, John Robert.  Wife Elsie D. wrote to police in 1896.  She had married him in Sydney recently, but now believes he was a married man.  He was born at Stowport, Worcestershire England, was from Victoria.  11 pages, List 32.

BEECHWORTH STATE SCHOOL No. 1560.  Report in 1895 of fires which had occurred.  Nine year old George OKE implicated; other children Thomas JOSE and Murdoch MURRAY interviewed.  14 pages, List 28.

BEESON, Thomas.  Wrote from Sandy Creek Warwick Qld in 1897 re Dr. Alexander RUSSELL and his brother James.  Alexander died in Belfast (Port Fairy) in the 1860s; wants details of his son.  Police state he had no son.  5 pages, List 6.

BELL, Robert, South Melbourne, reports finding a body in the Yarra river in 1895.  A luggage tag is in the name of FLYNN.  Mrs. O’FLYNN of Echuca asks if it is her husband; no.  Mrs. Flynn of Newtown Sydney asks the same question; photo posted to her – no photo on file.  13 pages, List 30

BELL, William H.  Tenders for various repairs to Tylden police station, 1864, 8 pages, List 14.

BELLERBY, Alexander G.  Drouin, Gippsland grazier, disappears in 1904, had suffering from sun stroke previously.  Newspaper cuttings, photo on file, found by wife in Geelong.  List 16.

BELLINGHAM, Eli.  Charged with assault on 17 year old daughter Elizabeth; case heard at Goroke and dismissed.  John J. COTTERILL of Nurcoring near Natimuk involved.  26 pages, List 7. CONNECTION FOUND

BELTON, Charles, State Ward, absconded from the care of Miss Elizabeth McKERCHER at Bylands, Kilmore in 1896.  A letter from him on file, asking to return, to which she agrees.  Discussion re claiming costs of returning him from Trawool.  10 pages, List 37. 

BENALLA.   Suspicious fire in Mair St., in 1895, in which building owned by Mrs. Ellen RIDE and used by John O’SHEA, proprietor and printer of the North East Ensign newspaper, was destroyed, along with undertaker’s premises of W.G. ABBOTT.  Travellers, Charles LARSON and James JENKINS were among witnesses.  O’Shea suspected, but open verdict given.  40 pages, List 26.

BEN HABDA. Assyrian, treats patients, but not a licensed doctor. Report on his activities in Gippsland, 1903.

BENJAMIN, Mrs. Clara, secretary Homeopathic Hospital Ladies Aid Association, wrote brief letter in  1906, enclosing booklet of annual report and balance sheet 1904-1905; lists committee, donations etc.  8 pages, List 31.

BENNETT, Elsie, 19 years, attempted suicide by poison in Carlton in 1912, after argument with boyfriend Leslie TITE.  Her parents are separated, mother a laundry worker.  Friend Vera POWELL mentioned.  No prosecution.  11 pages, List 33. 

BENNETTS, Samuel.  Sought by brother F. of Broken Hill; he was born in Lelant, Cornwall.  Found.  7 pages, List 3.

BENTLEY, Jessie Rosina, wife of Henry, suicided in South Melbourne in 1899.  Evidence taken from servant Florrie SLADE and hairdresser Percival JEFFERSON and Margaret LARKIN.  18 pages, List 17.

BENTON, Mr.  Pastry cook St. Kilda, has several Germans working for him, is scared soldiers are going to attack, 1916.  List 6.

BERA, Bartolomeno (or BREA). Charged with conspiracy at Sydney in 1918, one of three offenders; two were arrested in Sydney. He was Italian and 40 years of age. One page (Criminal Offence Report) and photo.

BERESFORD, William. Attempted suicide at Castlemaine in 1905 and later in Sydney. Member of the Maurice Gerald Dramatic Co.

BERGIN, T., of Bergin & Co., general merchants, San Remo, asks help to keep hotel running after being ordered to close.  The hotel is in his late father’s name, and he and his siblings wish to continue running it.  2 pages, List 29.

BERNARDASIE, Guiseppe. Died destitute at Guilford, in 1881, had been employed by Carlo ROSCONIA. Three letters brief notes from C.A. BIAGGI on file. Swiss Consul informed. 7 pages, List 2.

BERRICK, Gottfried, Mooroopna, farmer.  Reported missing in 1902, believed drowned.  Seen by a constable in 1903, admits fled from creditors.  7 pages, List 19.

BERRY, Mrs. Harriet. Wife of John B. Berry of Dandenong, died in suspicious circumstances in 1899. 10 pages, List 2.

BERSICA, John, Shepparton, applies for wine licence for Numurkah in 1898.  Police and residents oppose, he complains.  9 pages, List 22.

BERTRAM, Henry. Report on his marital affairs and relations, Bendigo 1900. Married Amelia NICHOLL in 1880, she died some months later. Married Elizabeth JURY, a prostitute, and got VD from her so left her. She now living with Charlie CARLIE and claims Bertram tried to poison her. Married Elizabeth MARTIN, by whom he had a child already, named Bertha. Witness at second marriage was Charles DAWE, married to Louie JURY who is now using the name Mrs. LORD. No witnesses will testify, so never charged with bigamy.  

BEVERIDGE, Thomas, c24yrs, sought by uncle Robert C. Beveridge, Sydney in 1904.  He is an orphan, and his grandmother in Scotland is anxious about him.  8p, List 11

BERWICK, Mrs.  Wrote from Collingwood in 1904, seeking location of her daughter who married John FLANNERY c1897, hasn’t seen her for four years.  6 pages, List 10.

BICKETT, Patricia Angela.  Murdered 1914, Antonio SORO arrested.  Witnesses interviewed include her mother Maria, Mary JACKSON, a teacher, schoolboy Frank FRIMLEY, engineer John GRAHAM, printer Charles Melanchthon STAMPER.  Photo of Soro on file, which is very large.  List 3.

BIESKE, Herman Adolph. Suspected of murdering first wife Elizabeth Ann nee WILLIAMS, who died July 1902. Remarried two months later to Emma Jane KAY, widow, nee JAMES. The couple and some of the children went to New Zealand. First wife’s brother complains so body quietly exhumed, but no poison found.

BIGGEN, Lilly, sought by sister E.S. GROVES of Liverpool NSW in 1895; believed to be in Bendigo.  Not found.  8 pages, List 28.

BILES, Mrs William wrote from Stepney, Adelaide in 1896 asking if the Mrs. ADAMS shot by her husband is her daughter; she hasn’t heard from her for 5 years.  Police report it is not her daughter.  7 pages, List 31. 

BIRCH, William, wrote from Christchurch New Zealand in 1895.  He is a Baptist minister and his wife received a letter from Alfred SENIOR, asking for money as he is ill and confined to his bed in Melbourne.  He has stayed with them, his brother is a highly respected medical man in Manchester, but they don’t have a high opinion of Alfred, so send money to police, asking them to investigate before handing money over.  They find he has left owing money to landlady.  14 pages, List 29.

BISHOP, George Francis, born London, 51 years, carpenter, died from overdose of morphine in Perth W.A. in 1898.  Wife Julia in East Brunswick claims he was poisoned by Robert HOLMES and his son Bertie, who used to live near them and also went to W.A.  Police doubt story.  27 pages, List 21.

BISHOP, Joseph, wrote from Broken Hill in 1897.  He married Edith Matilda EDWARDS in 1887.  She claimed to be the widow of Julius Ferdinand HALTERMANN, married 1881.  They are living apart and he seeks confirmation that she was a widow.  A sister is married to J.S. BUTTERS. 2 pages, List 20

BISHOP, Oswald Henry, deserted wife Rosetta Mary and their 7 year old son in 1912.  They were married in 1904 and he was an illusionist with travelled with a company of artists.  She is now living with her mother Mrs. Lavinia LONG at Malvern.  He uses names of “Pharos” and “Alma”, is 31 years, and possibly living with another woman.  He is found interstate and escorted back to Melbourne.  33 pages, List 34. 

BLAIR, Charlotte, married, separated from husband living with John Bamford BLACK near Dargo, died suddenly in 1898, leaving 7 month child Violet who is adopted by Mrs. FRENCH, sister in law of Oscar MESSENGER who suspects foul play in her death.  20 pages, List 22.

BLACK, George.  His son in law John LAWRENCE of Newry asks for police protection.  Black is due to be released from Sale prison and has threatned them.  4 pages, List 18.

BLACK, William of Diggora State School near Rochester, wrote in 1899 re Rebecca ANDERSON, in his employ, who wanted to know her parentage. She was put in Abbotsford Convent after her mother died and father attempted suicide. Police find she was born in Bathurst in 1875, her sister Mary in Dunolly in 1879. Their father James ANDERSON also used the name HENDERSON and had several convictions, but could not be located. 24 pages.

BLACKBURN, S. (or T.)  A chemist, his wife writes in 1897, alleging local hotels are still supplying him with drink despite court order.  Report states ‘hopeless case’ getting alcohol elsewhere.  4 pages, List 20

BLOUSTEIN, Matilda and daughter Syra ‘connected with the dramatic profession’ charged with resisting and assaulting police after being served with an ejection order by estate agent P.M. DALY at Carlton in 1894. 21 pages, including letter of complaint from Bloustein.

BOARDER, William.  Died in NSW bush in 1877, was from Shepherd’s Bush London England.  Mrs. A.K. TOWLE of Carlton asks if she can have his personal possessions to forward on to his sister Amy in England.  8 pages, List 5.

BODIN, Alexander.  Wife writes from Redfern NSW in 1913; she is getting 10/- maintenance per week from him but is in poor health and seeks more money.  Found, running hairdressing business with sister, but is himself in poor health and cannot give more.  Claims wife a drunkard.  6 pages, List 32.

BOLDINI, Walter, Carlton, 1905, asks police to help trace Harry and Molly COOPER, last heard of in Qld.  Her sister Florence Lizzie HAMPTON is in asylum under name of Ida DENNY.  Harry Cooper suspicious of request, but police reveal Boldini was genuine, he had lived with her for 8 years.  16 pages, List 23.

BONDIETTI, Basilis, found guilty of murdering Carlo COMISTO near Seymour in 1876 and executed.  File covers various reports on him and his activities and disposal of his property.  29 pages, List 34.

BONE, Charles.  Wrote from Rutherglen in 1898 re Thomas LUNEY/LOONEY who fathered his daughter Nancy Jane’s child in 1891, and was ordered to pay maintenance for 14 years, but went interstate and has not paid anything for 4 years.  11 pages, List 19.

BONIFACE, Jessie, removed from nurse Jessie PHILLIPS, Prahran, by her mother Jessie Dunlop Boniface in 1896, and died shortly afterwards.  Anonymous letter alleges ill-treatment.  Phillips then took in Willy O’NEIL, 8 months, mother Lizzie, single.  8 pages, List 37. 

BOOL, Richard, left Taunton England c1856, with his family, last heard of at Kyneton c1873, he was a marble mason.  Information sought by F. Bool, Tarnagulla in 1896.  Police find he died in Melbourne c1878, left 2 sons and son in law Parker.  9 pages, List 30.

BOOTH, Mrs. Margaret.  File re alleged abortion and death in 1894.  Husband Peter had gone to Western Australia from Port Melbourne.  6 pages, List 13.

BOTT, Henry Theodore. Child, lost at Cowes Swamp between Echuca and Kerang in 1879. Father Henry asks local police to investigate Queensland newspaper report of child found living in the wild, as he believes the child was kidnapped. Gives physical description. 4 pages, List 2.

BOURKE, W.H. of Richmond, complains of local police aggression at fireworks display; includes reference from his previous employer G.W. HARRIS of Mt. Gambier, as a sign of his respectability.  6 pages, List 3.

BOWDEN, James. Also known as DE GRASSE. Florence GRASS writes two letters from hospital to police department in 1918, claiming to be his wife and he has left her. Police find he has a wife and family in Brisbane, is 69 years of age. Florence is c27 yrs of age. He subsequently returns to Melbourne. 12 pages.

BREEN, James. Glen Wills. Arrested for failing to pay maintenance on illegitimate child by Maggie PAYNE, but found to be wrong person. Seeks compensation, 1895.

BREEN, Michael.  Wrote from Daysdale via Corowa, NSW in 1906, asking police to find his wife who has taken their four year old daughter and left with Larry WILLIAMS.  They have four other children.  3 pages, List 4.

BREUR, Edward Adolph alias BRAUN alias MULHENS, enquired for by German Consul in Sydney in 1906. Married there as Braun, last heard of in Bendigo. Found. 7 pages, List 2.

BRISBANE POLICE wrote in 1896 asking for details of Stanley GRAHAM, who was awaiting trial there.  They had found a letter from sister Emma HORNE of Ballarat, who confirms that his real name is Horne and that he had been convicted in Victoria of a crime but she didn’t know details.  6 pages, List 37.

BROWN, Martha, wife of James, died Macedon 1866, child James also died.  Allegation of neglect of child is raised with police; family lived at Middle Gully and another child had previously drowned.  10 pages, List 35. 

BROWN, Violet Muriel, wife of John, mother of Muriel Jean, 3 years, Sarah 5years and Walter 2 years, reports that someone has sexually interfered with Muriel in 1919.  Police find she suffered an accident, no evidence of assault.  10 pages, List 31. 

BRUNT, Mrs. Allen.  Wrote two letters from Burwood near Sydney in 1903; she had seen a newspaper report of a Kate MORGAN deserting her adopted child and wonders if this is her sister Kate Margaret HALL, who is ‘mentally afflicted’ and was last heard of going to Melbourne.  Police report it is not the same person – Morgan was the wife of a farmer at Nar Nar Goon, and her maiden name was TREACY.  8 pages, List 6.

BUCKMASTER, George, Private Enquiry Agent, wrote from Buxgunyah, Woolloongabba, Qld, in 1896 on behalf of the mother of James and William MURNANE, natives of Midleton, Co. Cork Ireland, who were last heard of in Gippsland.  She is anxious to hear from them.  Not found despite extensive search.  18 pages, List 36.

BURKE, Robert O’Hara, hairdresser, Hampton.  Wrote to police in 1915 re his niece Lillian Evelyn YOUNG, of Sebastopol, who answered a letter for a domestic servant and was asked to go to a house in South Yarra, run by Mrs. Margaret WARDLEY or LEIGH, and found it was a ‘house of assignation’.  Wardley has a friend James O’DWYER.  Interview with Young on file.  13 pages, List 2.  

BURKE, William, taken from parents by police when 8 years old, now 21 and asks details of location of parents and siblings John, Mary and Thomas, in 1898.  Police find they were admitted to the Industrial Schools, both parents, William and Annie were drunkards.  He was fostered out to a Mrs. Kane of Bendigo.  He wrote from Cunningham in Gippsland, but had left there by the time report forwarded.  They attempt to find him.  18 pages, List 21.

BURKE, William, c60 yrs, born Ireland, living at Mt Blowhard, found in a destitute and dying condition and admitted to hospital in Melbourne, 1905. 4pages, List 11.

BUTCHER, Mrs. Elsie, wrote from Hobart Tasmania in 1919 re husband Henry George.  A private in 5th Battalion he had returned to Melbourne but hadn’t arrived there yet, and she is concerned.  Photo of him in uniform on file.  Found in Richmond, by which time she has joined him.  12 pages, List 21.  See Introduction re photograph copying.

BUTLER, David.  Murdered at Mansfield in 1899.  Large file.  List 17.

BUTLER, Hannah.  Wrote two letters in 1898 re her son Thomas W. Butler, a hairdresser, last heard from in Melbourne.  One letter was from Ultimo, the other from Pyrmont.  Found.  17 pages, List 3.

BUTLER, Maggie, fell through skylight of Prince of Wales Hotel, Geelong, in 1896 and later died in hospital.  Was a domestic there; relatives in Ballarat collect body.  Fellow servant Emily McKirdy’s testimony on file.  7 pages, List 30.

BUTT, Charles, wrote from Bulumwaal in 1894, complaining of Charles AH HING who kept a disreputable shanty there.  Ah Hing also wrote to department about attitude of local Sergt of police; he employed a young girl named MOONEY to help his European wife.  Newspaper cutting on file show that Ah Hing was charged with wounding James AH KEW at Bairnsdale.  20 pages, List 24.

CARGEEG, Annie, a dressmaker, in 1896 she took a position in Korumburra with L. PEACOL, arranged by agent Alfred HORSLEY.  Copy of agreement on file.  She stayed at the Korumburra Coffee Palace; Peacol wanted a tailor, so she had to return to West Melbourne, but alleges assault on train; she had been acting strangely beforehand.  Comments from Laurets LARSEN, who kept the Coffee Palace, Martha WIELAND who lived there, railway employees Hugh FISHER, Rudolph CARROLL, Christian VIELGAARD, Charles Thomas BELLION, John LEE, Patrick GREEN, Thomas LENNON and Charles TRUEMAN.  Driver claims she was found on railway track and picked up.  Quite a convoluted story.  54 pages, List 36.

CASEY, Evelyn, South Yarra.  Complains to police about her pocket being picked at Flinders Street railway station in 1894.  4 pages, List 13.

CASEY, J.J.   Enquires about Michael RUSSELL on behalf of relatives in Ireland in 1877.  He was of Kilrush Co Kildare, left there in 1851 to go to the diggings.  Police think it possibly Michael Hennessy RUSSELL who died some years prior.  34 pages, List 5.

CASSERLY, Bernard, wrote from Sydney NSW in 1906, seeking a copy of his application to join the force in 1862 as it will show his birth date; he is applying for the old age pension.  No records prior to 1864. 5 pages, List 27.

CASWELL, John Henry. Wife Ellen ran off with Thomas RING, a 36 year old fireman, in 1894. He charged her with larceny, and pestered police about finding her until 1899. In 1894 an unknown woman suicided in Melbourne. She was believed to be Grace Elizabeth LANE, the former wife of George Lane of Adelaide. Photos of the dead woman, and one of Grace Lane are on the file, as well as details of Grace’s background. In 1899 Caswell claimed the dead woman was his wife, which police dispute. CATRINA, John.  Charged with cutting telegraph wire at Reedy Creek in 1896; Emily CAVANAGH postmistress there.  He is 9yrs old; witness John SHAW (8yrs) and Harold TOWNSEND mentioned.  14 pages, List 3.

CAVANAGH, Charles.  Died at Dunolly in 1918, aged 49yrs.  Letter from wife Emily asking confirmation of death; he deserted 24 yrs ago, they were married in 1891.  His brothers Patrick at Yarraville and William at Glenhuntly approached to pay burial expenses, but decline.  Emily is now living with – STOKES/STAKES.  8 pages, List 3.

CHAMBERS, Francis Joseph.  Died at St. Kilda in 1930, of food poisoning.  File re widow Jessie Ellen’s letter of complaint about police investigations.  26 pages, List 3.

CHAMBERS, Dr. Matthew, died suddenly at Rosebery, late of Hopetoun.  Arrangements re funeral and costs; wife at Balmoral writes she can’t afford to pay them, says he was an alcoholic, cousin William in Fitzroy also declines.  Brother James, solicitor, Durham England, does so.  18 pages, List 36. 

CHARLESTON, James, boarded with widow Charlotte MATTHEWS in Melbourne, and ran off with her daughter Adelaide in 1912.  She was under age, so mother took out a warrant, but cancelled it when she found the pair had married in Clunes.  23 pages, List  33.

CHERRY, Edwin Mark, fined for non registration of child’s birth in 1895, asks time to pay fine, is out of work.  8 pages, List 26.

CHURCH, Victoria.  Rev. Father McCARTHY of St Mary’s R/C church, Victoria St., West Melbourne, reports than a female infant was found on the porch by girl named Leonie KNOWLES in 1919.  Child committed to Department of Neglected Children, given name of Victoria Church.  2 pages, List 27.

CLARK, George.  Wrote from Telford Victoria in 1902, seeking entry into police force; 26 years. 2 pages, List 12.

CLARK, Rowland, artist.  Wife Flora wrote in 1895 from St. Kilda, hasn’t heard from him for some months, he is at Lefroy in Tasmania.  Found in poor circumstances.  7 pages, List 26.

CLARK, Thomas, wrote from Pentridge gaol in 1904, complaining about damage done to his clothing by police and asking compensation.  Stains were cut out to take samples as he had been suspected of murder, but someone else was the offender.  He was convicted of larceny at Ballarat in 1903.  10 pages, List 33. 

CLARKE, Edward J., Flemington.  Wrote in 1912 re wife’s tenant Mrs. FOSTER who died at Keilor.  Her adopted son took away property, some of which was his wife’s.  9 pages, List 32. 

CLARKE, Elizabeth (known as Lilley).  Seduced by Constable Alfred Patrick McMANUS, who promised marriage.  She gave birth to a daughter Mary and summoned him in January 1879 for maintenance, which was granted.  Child died and he subsequently tried to marry someone else, but she appeared at the church and the priest refused to marry him.  Her married sister Mrs. LOVE, writes to the Chief Commissioner about McManus’s conduct, but he declines to interfere.  Reference from Thomas Bent for her other sister Mrs. HAMSON.  Clarke was in service with Mr. CURTAIN of Windsor.  8 pages, List 4

CLARKE, Frank G., wrote from Thule, Deniliquin NSW in 1912, asking details of the injury done to motorcyclist Claude S. WOOD, by his ex chauffer John ARNOTT who ran into him in Melbourne.  He has received damages claim.  7 pages, List 32. 

CLARKE, George William.  Wife in Ballarat complains about lack of maintenance in 1910.  He is an engine driver at A mine in Boulder City W.A., has been there for 9 years.  Children Ruby and Percy mentioned.  7 pages, List 24.

CLARKE, James, of Mt. Gambier.  Solicitors Blake & Riggall seek information about him in 1896; disappeared in 1854, then aged c31 years, Scotch.  Reports from Thomas BUCKLEY of Portland and Daniel MINOGUE of Heywood state that while travelling from Portland with George MULLETT, William WINTERS, Daniel MINOGUE and  ‘2 blackfellows’ he disappeared overnight while they were camped.  Rumour said that he was paid to do so, so the Mt. Gambier squatter LEAKE would end up with his wife.  9 pages, List 29.

CLARKE, Samuel.  Coach-builder, Murtoa, insolvent, died 1894.  Sisters Emma CAWLEY and Ada M. McGRATH allege foul play by his de-facto Mary MURPHY.  Detailed report on family, he was one of twelve siblings.  11 pages, List 13.

CLARKE, William John, Rupertswood.  File on larcenies committed on him by employee John MADDEN, who is convicted in 1894.  His confession on file, along with inventory of items stolen, and evidence of employees Patrick LYONS, George ANNETT, Charles BUTCHER, Alfred BUTCHER, Henry LOONEY, Alice CHAMBERLAIN and gunsmith Frederick B. MORRIS and 16 year old James BAILLIE.  51 pages, List 31.

CLEARY, John, wrote from  Broken Hill in 1907 re the supposed death of his father Patrick Henry Cleary at Bendigo; no such event, 4 pages, List 15.

CLEBURNE, Richard, son of late Richard, merchant and Tasmanian MP, died suddenly  in 1896 near Rokewood.  He was first listed as unknown male, and a photograph taken, but is then identified.  He had been separated from his family for many years.  Daughter Emma writes from Mt. Direction Tasmania, offering to pay burial expenses.  26 pages and photo.  List 36.

CLIFFORD, Irene. Born Casterton 1892, mother Edith WEDD, schoolgirl, and father Timothy RYAN, her teacher. Adopted by Wesleyan Missionaries named Clifford, and subsequently gave birth to illegitimate child in 1908, claiming Enoch TONKIN is father. New Zealander Dan CLARKE, a butcher, and Edward DAWKINS also involved. Her testimony unreliable, no charge laid.  36 pages, List 5.

CLIFTON, S.E. Writes 3 letters from Corowa in 1920, seeking location of his sisters Gertrude and Mrs. W.H. EVANS.  James GRIGG of Melbourne handles family’s affairs, he is eccentric, a remittance man.  15 pages, List 3.

CLOTHIER, Charles. Confined in Swan Hill lockup as a lunatic following a drinking spree; was a publican from Euston in N.S.W. File re payment to local woman Elizabeth PICKEN who looked after him. 5 pages, List 2. 

COFFEY, J.  Sgt of Police, Ararat, writes in 1910 re professional spieler and gambler Michael HASSETT who defrauded his son of various goods, worth £100.  His son manages a watchmaker’s shop.  11 pages, List 24.

COHEN, John. Murdered 1892 at Stirling or Haunted Creek. Large file covering 1892-97, and another of 1894.

COLEMAN, Leslie F., 15 years, stowed away on Brisbane to Melbourne steamer in 1912.  Father F.F. Coleman of Brisbane wants him returned, but arrangements take some time.  12 pages, List 32. 

COLEY, Wilfred Ernest.  Awaiting trial for murder of Gertie McGRATH in Sydney in 1920.  Fathered child by Catherine IRVINE in Melbourne, she now in care.  10 pages, some repetitive.   List 24.

COLLIER, Fanny, born London UK 1863, gave birth to illegitimate daughter in 1886.  Daughter Lillian G. SPENCE wrote from Fortitude Valley Qld., in 1910, asking police to find her mother.  7 pages, List 24.

COLLINS, Albert John, charged with attempted carnal knowledge of Ellen LAHIFF, 13 year old schoolgirl, his sister in law, at Hawthorn in 1912.  She was born in Lucknow NSW, child of John Joseph and Jane Ann nee McGREGOR.  Collins was 24 years, worked on ships.  Case dismissed; police critical of change of testimonies.  25 pages, List 33.

COLLYER, Caleb, head teacher Colac State School.  Daughter May accuses him of incest in 1895; case dismissed.   Warning: this is a very confronting file.  9 pages, List 25.

COLLINS, Annie.  Master in Lunacy requests information on her background, 1869.  Had two children, one a girl Mary Ann, her husband was dead.  Police find she lived with William TAYLOR firstly, then – CULLEN.  Went to New Zealand with Cullen, was admitted to asylum there, then returned to Victoria and eventually admitted to Collingwood Asylum in 1866.  Edward GAMBLE of Redesdale provides some detail.  File includes a four page copy of report on tissue paper.  19 pages, List 4.

COMPTON, Thomas, sought by wife in Fremantle in 1906; left 3 years ago, a sailor.  Found.  4 pages, List 26.

CONDON, Alfred, died in Victorian Asylum in 1895; attempt by police to get burial expenses from brother Robert H., mother Mary Ann and sister Mrs. J.J. LAWN.  12 pages, List 26.

CONDRON, William.  In partnership with McGUIGAN in Fitzroy in 1895, takes goods to Geraldton W.A. to sell them, and dies there.  Police asked to supply details, and file relates his drinking problem.  13 pages, List 26.

CONNOR, Mrs. T., c/- Mrs. Brown, Ballina, NSW, wrote in 1919 re her husband J., an engraver, hasn’t heard for a month, has a sick child and no money.  Found in Melbourne.  4 pages, List 221.

CONSTABLE, Walter, charged with criminal assault on child Mary ROSS (real name Evelyn Riddell STEVENS) at Rutherglen in 1895.  Her mother Janet’s first husband was Thomas STEVENS; they were divorced.  Second husband died in Albury.  Mother brings child to Melbourne for treatment of a ‘loathsome disease’ and loses money.  Police and charity look after them and return them for the trial.  File re proceedings and costs involved. 15 pages,  List 28.

COODE ISLAND. File re illegal stripping of bark there, 1890s; fisherman and ferry operator named.

COOK, Evelyn.  Wrote from Adelaide in 1905 re her father William G. COOK, who had left her and her younger brother William John Daryl Cook (11years) to look after themselves, and gone to Melbourne.  She was 16 years old.  Father is found but refuses to support his son who is placed in the Industrial School in Adelaide.  9 pages, List 8.

COOK, Jane, arrived in Victoria from Westbury Tasmania in 1898, 68 years, born Ireland, widow, 6 children, 5 dead.  Picked up as destitute.  Police establish her daughter Mary LAW is at Dunolly, living with Harry APPLE, but she cannot help; is living in a tent with 3 children.  Jane is sent back to Tasmania.  18 pages, List 21.

COOK, Robert. Murdered wife and stepchildren at Casterton in 1870s, never caught. In 1895 a blind prisoner named PRIMROSE in a NSW gaol, claimed that Cook was a fellow prisoner. His statement proves doubtful. History of the case given.  Second file of 1918 detailing three skeletons recovered in the area in the 1880s, believed to the victims, and placed in storage at Edenhope police stables until murderer found.

COOK/COOKE, Robert, marine engineer, married with two children, 37 years, from London, attempted suicide in 1902 in Melbourne.  T.B. JEFFREY of Cottesloe, W.A. seeks police help in finding him, Cook stayed with him for some time, offers to help.  Cook’s father is in Newcastle on Tyne, and his family are at Whitley in Northumberland.  He supposes it is the drink that caused the attempt.  9 pages, List 20.

COOLEY, Edmund Thomas.  His solicitor in Adelaide asks police to investigate an advertisement in the Isle of Man newspaper regarding the death of William Cooley who left there in the 1850s and died in Yackandandah in 1905.  Is the deceased a relation of Edmund’s father Thomas?  Letter on file from J. LACK confirming he had purchased the Yackandandah land of Cooley prior to his death.  7 pages, List 4.

COOMBES, Ada of Longley Tasmania, wrote in 1899 re her brother James, last heard of at Murchison. Letter from Mr. P. BRISBANE of Murchison on file, also letter from Beechworth solicitors. He was a surveyor, but working as a miner. Not found. 18 pages, List 2.

COOMBS, John Edward (8yrs) and Joseph Stafford (3 yrs).  Correspondence re sending them to the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum in 1864; their mother was mentally ill in hospital.  11 pages, List 4.

COPAS, Henry W., nurseyman, Wirrabara, Sth Australia, wrote in 1896 re R. WILSON of South Yarra who advertised dogs for sale, but never forwarded them after payment was sent, but fobbed Copas off.  Police report his real name is William Wilson and that he makes his living by fraud.  Copas wishes to prosecute, but Wilson clears off, deserting his wife in the process.  She takes out a maintenance order and he is arrested.  25 pages, List 37. 

COPPOCK, Mrs. M. Wrote from Bowden South Australia in 1900 re her husband Arthur Herbert, who had deserted her. He had served in the NSW Naval Contingent that went to China. She saw a death of Robert Coppock in Victorian paper and wonders if he is a relation. Police ascertain no connection.

CORSTON, James.  Committed suicide in Melbourne in 1880; letters from his brothes Peter and John in New Zealand.  11 pages, List 4.

COSGROVE, Patrick, 30 years, charged with carnal knowledge of Frederina COOK, 17 years, at Shepparton in 1919.  Case dismissed after he married her.  8 pages, List 31. 

COTINGTON, Phyllis of Hay, NSW, wrote in 1938 re William HICKEY, who had left his child Keith with her and not paid maintenance.  Asks that the child’s grandmother Mrs. LIEBEG of Bendigo be contacted, which is done.  6 pages,  List 2.

COTTON, Henry, 40 years, and LEWIS, Henry, 35 years.  Tried at Maryborough in 1855 for highway robbery, but escaped from custody.  In 1866 Cotton is identified and re-arrested, but case collapses.  14 pages, List 35.

COULTER, Joseph Henry.  Charged with setting fire to his house at North Prentice in 1912.  Report on case.  29 pages, List 32. 

COUTTS, Ada.  Wrote from Fremantle WA in 1907 re her sister in law Mrs Gordon COUTTS of Yarra Junction, who had failed to reply to her letters.  He had been brought back after deserting her some years ago.  6 pages, List 15.

COWARD, Harold Frederick of Footscray.  Deserted wife Amelia c1900, and believed gone to Sydney with uncle Harry ROGERS.  He was 19 yrs, a laborer.  Mrs. M. BEGLEY, a widow , of NSW, alerts police; he is courting her 18 yr. old daughter Katie and she doesn’t like it.  25 pages, List 3.

COWIE, Thomas Henry.  A miner, of Zeehan Tasmania, he wrote in 1901, asking police to find his wife Charlotte Amelia, who had left him and taken their two children.  He believed her to be with John SPARK, a former Ballarat resident, who had been in Zeehan, and was separated from his wife.  4 pages, List 4.

COWLEY, George Edwin.  Deserted wife in W.A., secuded daughter of Mrs. CHAPMAN of Colac and had a child be her.  Solicitors in Perth make enquiries in 1902.  11 pages, List 16.

COWLING, Mrs.  Wrote from Kalgoorlie in 1908 re William ALLEN, formerly in railways there and now believed to be in Melbourne.  4 pages, List 5.

COX, James.  Wrote from Terrick Terrick in 1904, complaining of treatment by Constable BROWN of Mitiamo, who had falsely accused him of stealing from Hugh McLEAN, orchardist of Harcourt.  Cox’s son Peter mentioned.  29 pages, including three letters from Cox snr.  List 10.

CRAIG, WILLIAMSONS & THOMAS.  Warehouse fire 1897; background of Richard PEEBLES sought.  Large file, some water damaged and difficult to read.  List 20

CRANE, Barney.  Anonymous letter of 1919 alleges he has committed bigamy under the name of Robinson.  Police find he is living with Agnes THOMPSON and they have two children.  Crane says he married Louisa MULDER fourteen years ago and she deserted him.  5 pages, List 4.

CRAVEN, Thomas, wrote from Bendigo in 1895, wishing to join police force.  He was 20 years old.  2 pages, List 28.

CRAWFORD, William of Skipton.  Applies to join police force in 1906, but gave wrong age, so denied admittance. George RUSSELL of Langi Willi writes supporting letter.  3 pages, List 5.

CREE, Rosie Christina, 16yrs, sister of Mrs. JONES, taken from Miss SUTHERLAND’s Homes by BLAIR family of Alberton, to help on farm, 1905.  They sell out and go overseas, and she is taken in by farmer Arthur WARREN and wife.  Rosie claimed Warren sexually assaulted her; taken by neighbour Dave JONES to KEATING family who look after her.  Also claims a sexual relationship with Jones, who is to marry someone else.  Her letters to her sister on file, as is statement by Ernest Henry CAUGHEY.  26 pages, List 3.

CRICHTON, A.L. Fifteen year old daughter Etheldom Grace missing, 1907. Father is a caterer and pastry cook at Kensington. Her photo on file. Found.

CRICKETERS ARMS HOTEL, Punt Rd. Richmond.  Anonymous complaint about Sunday trading in 1902.  Licensee was James McCONVILLE.  12 pages, List 16.

CROFT, Jane, 33 years, single, mother of 4 living children, made allegation of sexual assault against Constable HORNIBROOK at Kyneton in 1895, withdrew it, then took him to court for maintenance of her baby in 1896.  Very detailed information on the file, she is described as ‘a depraved, vicious, violet and most untruthful creature’.  She admits that Gavan Stewart WALLACE is the father of one of her children; her letters to him on file.  Case thrown out of court.  22 pages, List 37. 

CRONAN, Mrs. Emily.  Attempted suicide in 1920, taken to hospital by police, no charges laid.  7 pages, List 24.

CROOKS, Miss Mary J. of Belfast, Ireland, wrote in 1909 re her aunt Violetta KOLLNER, last heard from ten years ago.  Found.  5 pages, List 3.

CROSBY, Catherine.  Enquiry from Master in Lunacy, 1868, re her property, which was sold.  Letter from her 1869 protesting this and explanation of police actions.  28 pages, List 4.

CROUCH, George.  Wife left him and their four children in 1919; he subsequently deserted the children.  They were placed in the Hope of Hope Collingwood for a period.  Letter from their grandmother in Sydney, seeking their whereabouts in 1920.  9 pages, List 3.

CULKIN, Martin William.  Wrote two letters in 1894, complaining of alleged assault and police inaction; report on his allegations, 18 pages, List 13.

CUMMINS, Henry James and Thomas Michael and Henry NICHOLLS,tried at Children’s Court Melbourne in 1919, with breaking and entering shop of George Arthur HUDSON.  Witnesses Alexander John BLYTH and Richard Morton Lyell PIKE.  6 pages.  Henry charged with further offences.  8 pages, List 27.

CUMMINS, Philip, died at Mitcham in 1905, buried at government expense.  File details unsuccessful attempt to get sons Philip and John and daughters Mrs. HUNT and Mrs. ROBERTSON to pay costs.  14 pages, List 26.

CUNNINGHAM, Lilian May, employed at the Epidemic Hospital at the Exhibition in 1919, asks Clifford Henry NEWBERY, an orderly there, to mind her jewellery, but he pawns it instead.  14 pages List 31. 

CURTAYNE, Francis Lee. Charged with behaving in an indecent manner after being seen urinating in a gutter, 1915. Attempts to get case dropped; is the son of the late John, one of the founders of Melbourne etc. Was a sharebroker and former banker, and was well-known as ‘an honest man but I preserved my character as a gentleman, the rogues did not.’

CUTTS, Thomas.  Wife wrote from Ballarat re his failure to pay maintenance for her and their 3 children, and she due to give birth shortly.  Police report she was never married to him, was originally Fanny SMITH and lived with him for some years.  She then left him at Penshurst and married –WRIGHT.  Police return his two surviving children to him.  4 pages, List 15.

DALE, Maud of Carlton, wrote in 1899 re her father who imported a merry-go-round and has been travelling in N.S.W. with it. She and her sister are worried as they haven’t heard from him for some months. Police eventually track him down, but in the meantime he had written to her. 12 pages, List 2.

DALGLISH, William John, husband of Agnes, writes a series of letters in 1895 from Jumbunna, claiming among other things that neighbour Elizabeth MARTIN had committed bigamy with Walter TABOR.  Report states ill feeling between the two families because Dalglish’s daughter was dumped by Tabor for Martin’s daughter.  16 pages, List 27.

DALSCHECK, Abraham.  Victorian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children report in 1898 that he has left his two young sons on his property in Gippsland to fend for themselves.  5 pages, List 3.

DALY, John, late of Sydney, died in 1874 on board steamer You Yangs, 76 years.  File re disposal of assets.  9 pages, List 31.

DALY, Mary.  Wrote from Sydney in 1905 re Edward DU VERGUR, who had deserted his wife Maria.  She is looking after her, but can’t continue.  7 pages, List 8.

DANGERFIELD, Mrs. St. Kilda, 1894. Wants to adopt her daughter’s illegitimate child, which is not expected to live. Daughter in hospital and husband being treated for ‘brain trouble’. Asks no inquest when child dies as it will upset husband; department agrees.

DANIELS, F.W., public servant, Kalinga, Brisbane, Qld, wrote in 1938 re his wife, son Harold and unnamed daughter, who were living in Hawthorn.  He is divorced and has been supporting them, but they refuse to answer his letters.  Gives detailed background to case.  10 pages, List 2.

D’ANGRI, Noel Arthur. Ran away from home at Bentleigh after quarrel with father. 12 yrs old. Photo of him and a young girl on file, taken four years previously. 4 pages.

DANN, Edith May, nee JOYNER, charged with bigamy 1930; married Frank Dann at Footscray in 1927 and subsequently Walter Wm. WARNHAM.  13 pages, List 2.

DARLING HOTEL, Richmond.  Anonymous letter in 1902 that police frequent the place.  Report states not true, and that a rival Miss Hannah DUGGAN of the Royal Sailor Hotel is probably the person who wrote.  She was recently fined.  8 pages, List 16.

DASH, Charlotte. Alleged criminal assault on her, 1881. She was the daughter of the Clerk of Petty Sessions at Kerang. 8 pages, List 2.

DAULBY, Mrs. E., wrote from Adelaide in 1895 re her husband Henry who has not sent maintenance.  He is a butcher.  Found living with another woman.  6 pages, List 29.

DAULBY, Mrs. E.  Wrote from North Adelaide in 1897 re her husband Henry, last heard of in 1895 with a butcher’s shop in St. Kilda, he deserted her.  Police find he is living with another woman.  6 pages, List 20

DAVEY, F.K., Meeniyan, applies for Mounted Police, 1898.  1 page, List 20.

DAVEY, Reginald.  Of Boort, charged with killing 39 wild ducks in 1906.  17 pages, List 4.

DAVIDSON, William. In 1917 deserted 5 year old son and wife and ran off with Jessie DOUBLEDAY, who left her husband William Henry at South Yarra, and took their 9 year old daughter with her. Doubleday has enlisted and wants his daughter back.

DAVIES, Mrs. A., Collingwood, 1903, complains her husband (un-named) doesn’t provide enough for her and her 13 year old daughter to live on; he is a bootmaker, as is his brother.  The family formerly lived in Carlton, and neighbours there give her a poor report.  6 pages, List 25.

DAVIES, Christina Maria. Born Melbourne, married John A. McCONAGHY in 1877 and bigamously William DAVIES in 1877. She has had nine children by him. Davies had previously married Catherine LEWIS in Sydney, and deserted both wives, and married Alice LUND. Christina wants Davies found, 1909 but drops case. Her daughter is married to Michael FOLEY.

DAVIES, Thomas, pensioner Vic. Railways, died Northcote  August 1895, intestate.  Believed to have a married sister Margaret LEWIS in Cardiff.  List of assets sold.  6 pages, List 31.

DAY, Herbert William, Standard Bank of Australia, Geelong, asks police to keep an eye on James ASHLEY who is traveling around with Day’s steam merry-go-round.  Confidential report shows Ashley owes money.  4 pages, List 28.

DAY, Marcella.  Her Dramatic Company asks police presence for performance at Brighton Town Hall in 1895; original flyer on file.  3 pages, List 26.

DAY, Thomas of Hawthorn, wrote in 1906, asking if Mrs. GALE, and old friend, needed to register under the Infant Life Protection Act, as she was looking after his twins.  Their mother had died giving birth.  3 pages, List 3.

DAYLESFORD. Dynamite explosion at office of Advocate newspaper, 1895.

DAYLESFORD CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOUR SOCIETY.  Complains to police that Leonard BIBLE and Martin DWAN are running street bets on races.  Report states that the claim is by Charles DEVLIN who had to apologise to the local constable for slandering him and no truth in claim.  6 pages, List 16.

DEAN, Margaret.  Gives birth to an illegitimate child on the Sydney Express train in 1899.  File re her removal at Seymour and care of her and child.  Father of the child given as William MARSH.  She and Marsh had been employed by Frederick HENDY, farmer, Katunga.  Marsh’s father William at Coburg.  Her brother Robert and family live at Yarrawonga.  35 pages, List 16.

DEED, George Robert, 37 years, assaulted his wife and burnt down his house at Majorca in 1896, then attacked Dr P. CUNNINGHAM at Talbot, before suiciding.  His body was later found by George GEDDES of Sandy Creek.  File details case, including callinng on Aboriginal trackers and draining a nearby dam.  31 pages, List 35.

DE GOEY, Amy Elizabeth. Living with Henry CARR and registers birth of Leslie Hilton Carr in 1893. His wife Mary Ann Carr claims false registration of birth as they are not married. She has been married to him for 29 years and has nine children.

DO GOEY, Amy Elizabeth, wife of John.  Henry CARR, proprietor of Brighton Coffee Palace, named as co-respondent in divorce case in 1895.  His wife is divorcing him and reports false registration of birth.  12 pages, List 26.

DELLA MADDALENA, Andrea.  Hanged himself at Nagambie in 1910.  Italian Consul in Melbourne seeks details of estate etc.  19 pages, List 23.

DE PLEVITZ, George Richard. Bigamist. Married Elsie E. HANIGAN in Sydney in 1912, had three children by her, then married Ivy LAYTON in Melbourne in 1925. His mother is Mrs. Mary Ann LUFF.

DE SILVERIA, Frank, sought by M. De Silveria of Albert Park in 1894.  He was also known as Frank Silver, has a brother James, and was 16 years old.  9 pages, List 13.

DEVINE, John.  Died suddenly at 65 Simpson St., East Melbourne in 1898, home of his brother in law.  2 pages, List 18.

DEWING, George Mathew. Sought by W.A. Zuill, MLA in NSW in 1918 on behalf of unnamed sister who is anxious to contact him. Found. 7 pages.

DIBBS, Emily, alias Madame FITZJAMES, ‘professional abortionist’, convicted of murder of Mrs. Adele DIXON in 1896.  20 pages, List 37. 

DIBBS, Emily. Summoned in 1899 for failing to contribute to the maintenance of her three children Emily, Harriet and Arthur who are Wards of the State. She is in prison, but owns rental property, the proceeds of which could be used for the children. 10 pages, List 2.

DICKENS, Georgina, wife of the licensee of Robin Hood Hotel, Drouin, claims an unknown woman left a baby with her in Melbourne in 1894, but it is really the illegitimate child of her daughter Rhoda DOBBIN, and she is trying to get rid of it.  Witnesses Charlotte HUNTINGTON and Dr. Robert Merry SMITH confirm true position.  19 pages, List 24.

DICKIE, Mary Gill, daughter of a clergyman from Colac, alleged she was raped by James McKENZIE at Mrs. PLEWS Boarding House in South Yarra in 1912.  She was single, 43 years.  He was a friend of the HARRISONS, a newly arrived couple from England.  Dr. HORN who had been treating her gives her “a terrible character” and the case is withdrawn.  7 pages, List 33. 

DILLER, Charles.  Wrote from Pine Lodge near Shepparton in 1898 re his daughter Esther Louisa, 19 years, who was supposed to be with Mr. & Mrs. FLEMING at Werribee.  7 pages, List 18.

DILLON, E.  File re his failure to pay burial costs of illegitimate child of M.A. TIPPING, who he later married.  Two letters from him on file, 1903.  14 pages, List 4.

DITTMER, R.  Wrote from Goulburn NSW in 1897 re his uncle Conrad BOETTCHER, who was supposed to be keeping an hotel at Melbourne, according to Dittmer’s mother in Germany.  Conrad was born near Hamburg Germany, and would be 40-50 years old.  Not found.  13 pages, List 6.

DIX, Emily. Anonymous letter claiming her husband a drunkard etc. Letters from her re her children Emily, Isabella and Louisa in Industrial School; she is in Yarra Bend. 4 files in all covering 1869-1872.

DOBLE, Philip.  Sought by brother in law Charles HEYNEN of Mallala Sth Australia in 1888. He left there the previous year and hasn’t been heard from; 31yrs, native of Devon England, sister Mrs. John HARVEY lives in Clunes.  6 pages, List 5.

DOBSON, George, killed his 3 children and a neighbour Peter DIMSDALE near Springhurst in 1894, then suicided.  17 pages, List 24.

DODD, Hugh Gray. File re cost of his burial after his death at Pakenham in 1920. Wife Annie located in Maitland, but states he deserted her twenty years ago and she can’t pay the expense. File includes list of his assets. 15 pages. CONNECTION FOUND

DOLAN, Mrs. Helena.  Writes from Brisbane Qld in 1899; was deserted by husband Tom 3 years ago.  His father lives in Echuca.  Not found.  8 pages, List 17.

DOLAN, Mrs. Thomas, wrote from Brisbane in 1896 re her husband who left 4 weeks ago for Echuca, to see his ailing father, and hasn’t returned home.  Father interviewed and said son was heading home, but he hadn’t returned.  9 pages, List 36. DONOVAN, Frank.  Deserted wife in Sydney c1893.  She writes in 1897, asking police to find him, family in Bendigo.  Not found.  15 pages, List 20.

DONOVAN, J.H. Wilson, taken to court for non payment of maintenance of children in Industrial Schools, 1894; details of family life given, 5 pages, List 13.

DOOLAN, Joseph, sought by wife in Geelong in 1898.  They have 2 children and she hasn’t herd from him for some months.  Found interstate.  6 pages, List 20.

DOOLAN, Mary.  Anonymous letter from Newtownship near Kilmore in 1895, alleges she concealed the birth of a child.  Police report on family.  6 pages, List 29.

DOYLE, Ann.  Fire at her rented shop in Mark St. South Melbourne in 1865; daughter Madeline suspected.  Fire put out by neighbour George ABSOLOM.  Owner of shop was Thomas BARBER.  13 pages, List 4.

DOYLE, John, Seymour, receives suicide note from John P. O’BRIEN, posted from NSW in 1894, asking him to look after his children Elizabeth Rose and Mary Joseph who are with his wife in Seymour.  O’Brien was formerly Inspector of Nuisances there, a Victorian, 32 years, who got into financial trouble.  Suspicion that O’Brien has faked death as no trace found.  15 pages, List 24.

DOYLE, Michael, died June 1899 at Bendigo; made will on day of death.  Daughter J. Doyle c/- Ariah Park Goulburn NSW wrote in 1913 re disposal of assets.  (Very difficult to decipher writing).  Sister Katie LYNCH mentioned.  16 pages, List 32.   

DRIGGETT, S.J. Returned soldier No. 5826, 21st Battalion.  Police receive a request from Red Cross in 1919, on behalf of an English woman, querying his marital status and character.  Not good and may have committed bigamy in 1914 in NSW with a Miss FLYNN.  8 pages, List 3.

DRUMMOND, William, owed wife May Evelyn of Hawthorn maintenance in 1919; died in Castlemaine 1920.  4 pages, List 31. 

DRUMMOND, William H., School teacher, Samaria near Benalla.  Shed burnt down in 1897, neighbour Michael DUFFY suspected.  Report on ill-feeling between the two, newspaper cuttings, etc.  45 pages, List 20.

DRUMMOND, William Henry, Police Magistrate. Died of snake bite 1868 at exhibition of snake bite cure.

DUDLEY, W.H., stoker, on H.M.S. Psyche at Sydney, asked for leave and to draw reserved money.  Police confirm wife in South Yarra in financial difficulties.  5 pages, List 32. 

DUFFY, J.G., Outtrim, 1898, complains of the ‘miserable pittance’ allowed him as a witness in court case at Korumburra; employed at Coal Pits there.  4 pages, List 20.

DUFRESSE, Captain of ship Le Finistere, complains (in French) 1880, of cab driver over charging him.  7 pages, List 4.

DUGGAN, Laurence, died at Malmsbury in 1865, had been in colony for 12 months, had cousins James at Kilmore and Edward at Werribee.  Correspondence re personal property which was found to be worthless.  11 pages, List 34.

DUGGAN, William, farmer, Woorenen, Mallee district, near Swan Hill, reports attempt to poison him and Robert WOODBURN in 1896 by placing strychnine in flour which they made into bread.  Animals which ate the bread died.  Offender not found.  18 pages, List 36. 

DUMESQUE, Mary.  (also written as DUMERGUE).  Wrote from Rainbow in 1919, asking police for force her daughter Frances, known as Marie, to return to Melbourne with her and her siblings.  She has been living with the JAHNE family and prefers to stay with them.  Other daughter was Mrs. H.G. HEATHCOTE.  List 5

DUNKLEY, Thomas. Registered births of 3 children at Brighton prior to 1893, claiming his wife Ellen was the mother, but his servant Mary PRICE was the real mother.

DUNLOP, Mrs. Wallace.   Wrote in 2876 re schoolgirl Susannah KLING who was living at Constable Strachan’s house at Dandenong.  She alleges he has ill treated her, which he denies.  9 pages, List 6.

DUNN, Det.  Home bombed in 1931.  Terry Dean and Curley Brook suspected.  Incomplete file, but large.  List 4.

DUNN, Fanny.  Report of her attempted suicide at Clunes in 1908; aged 25.  2 pages, List 4.

DUNN, Michael.  Wrote from Hamilton Commonage [?] Newcastle, NSW in 1897, asking for their help in getting his daughter Mrs. ROY home from Outtrim.  Mention of a child, file incomplete, seems she had not been leading a ‘respectable’ life.  10 pages, List 6.

EASTLAKE, Albert.  Sought by Barbara O’SHANNASSY in 1919.  He is the father of her child.  His wife Blanche found in Prahran, they have 3 children, married 13 years, he left her in 1918 and went to Sydney with Dolly PATTEN.  He was formerly in AIF.  Found ill in Sydney.  15 pages,  List 22.

ECCLES, Edward Blanchard.  Alias Baron EICHOLZ and STEEL.  Small photo loose in box, no file.  He was a commission agent, c50 yrs.  List 3.

ECHUCA CO-OPERATIVE BAKERY SOCIETY CO.  Master Bakers complain in 1895 that local constable is now Chairman and there is a conflict.  Police agree and he is forced to resign as Chairman.  File includes booklet of 8 pages giving rules of Society.  In 1891 the committee were James COLLINS, William FINDLAY, Henry QUINTON, Frederick Edwin TURNER, James J. WRIGLEY, W.B. REID and the manager was J.H. SULLIVAN.  18 pages, List 27.

EDGAR, Andrew Lindsay.  Serves a month probation with detective branch of police, then declared to be unsuitable.  Scottish, 30 yrs, completed entry forms on file.  9 pages, List 3.

EDGAR, Elsie, dressmaker, 27 years, charged with concealment of birth, left dead baby in box in the house of Mrs. Susanna MATZ, Sth Melbourne in 1919.  Arrested.  E.A. COLE, widower, with 4 children and a station of 1,400 acres at Moama NSW offers to marry her.  Her photo on file.  15 pages, List 21.  See introduction re photograph copying.

EDGE, Arthur, Ultimo, Sydney NSW, applied to join police force in 1895; English, 28 years.  1 page, List 27.

EDWARDS, Mrs. Eleanor.  Charged with abandoning child that she received from nurse Mrs Ellen M. FULLER of Carlton and received money for adopting in 1898, by tricking two children, Neil FYFE, 11 years and Eva BOWMAN [?] into taking it.  In jail for previous action in 1896.  Her daughter Eleanor AUDLEY has a child, lives in Monbulk.  Edwards is ‘a notorious woman in the baby farming line … I have every reason to believe that she has abandoned a large number of young babies.’  Other daughter Alice Ann TERRILL, divorced, is an inmate of Coburg gaol.  39 pages, List 17.

EDWARDS, James, wrote from Hurstville Sydney in 1914 re property he left at a shanty in Little Osborne St Williamstown.  Mrs. W. VEAL of Footscray then lived nearby and was to keep an eye on it, but things were stolen; it had calico walls.  10 pages, List 32. 

EDWARDS. John, wrote from Prahran in 1895, seeking to join force.  He was formerly of Bendigo, and in that volunteer Regiment.  Copies of references on file.  3 pages, List 29.

EDWARDS, Marion or Bill. Anonymous letter of complaint re behaviour on and past history [dresses as a male] 1908.

EGAN, James. Suicide of a male at St. Arnaud in 1892, identify not confirmed, but may be him or perhaps Frank Egan, who was Irish, c28 years. File reactivated, reason not given, in 1899. Photo of Frank Egan on file. List 2

EDLINGTON, Elizabeth Grace, daughter of Thomas of Pumpkin Point Orbost, 27 years, alleges William CUMMING got her pregnant in 1895, then gave her pills to get rid of child.  She had a miscarriage, has been crippled ever since.  Makes formal complaint against him in 1897.  25 pages, List 20.

ELCHORN, Charles.  Middle Park; bomb thrown at his house in 1928.  Leslie (Squizzie) Taylor, J. Thompson, “Mush” Burns, Terry Dean, “No Toe King”, “Lofty” George, Frank MANLE and Peter HENNESSY suspected.  Incomplete file, 3 pages, List 4.

ELLICE, Mrs. H.M., of York W.A. wrote in 1907 re Charles Henry CLARK who died, asks if it could be her brother William Charles CLARKE who she hasn’t heard from in 16 years, he was a boundary rider at Beechworth, c 37 years.  Police confirm it is not her brother.  6 pages, List 15.

ELLIOT, James.  Wrote from Rookwood Infirmary in 1903 re Jean BROWN, a relation, c30 years, brother kept a hotel.  Police interview William BROWN, who states this is his sister and provides address.  Jean states Elliot is her husband, ‘a worthless fellow’ and wants nothing to do with him.  4 pages, List 19.

ELLIOT, Mrs. Rosa.  Wrote from Perth in 1902.  Has been told that her mother Mrs. McMAHON died in hospital and Mrs. MOORE LANE has taken possession of her property.  7 pages, List 18.

ELLIOTT, Mary.  Wrote from East Brunswick in 1894 regarding her husband Frank, a plumber, 41yrs, who had left her and their 8 children.  She thought he was interstate.  6 pages, List 3.

ELLIOTT, Maud.  Wrote from Cobar NSW in 1904 re death of a male Elliott in Melbourne, asks if it is her brother Jim – no.  6 pages, List 10.

ELLISON, George, sought by wife Ellen in Sydney in 1895, there is a maintenance order against him.  She thinks he’s dairy farming near Charlton, but not found.  20 pages, List 31. 

ELZY, Samuel. Died in Ballarat Hospital in 1900. Brother J. of Williamsford West Coast Tasmania, formerly of Campbell’s Creek Victoria, asks police for details

EMERSON, Lancelot McIntyre.  His mother in law Mrs. E. McGONEGLE writes from Charters Towers in 1902, has head he has died.  She is maintaining his children.  6 pages, List 18.

ENGLISH, Mrs. Kathleen.  Wrote from North Melbourne in 1917, applying to become a policewomen.  4 pages, List 7.

ENTWISTLE, Marian, committed for infanticide at Clunes in 1896; born there in 1877, parents James and Margaret ‘addicted to drink’;  She has been in service with Mrs. Emily GILBERT at the Town Hall Hotel there and child found dead in closet.  11 pages, List 37. 

ETTRIDGE, Thomas, wrote from Lyonville in 1896 re youths damaging his property; boys RADCLIFF and MOORE are identified.  5 pages, List 36. 

EVANS, Christmas, wrote from Ballarat in 1906, seeking to re-apply for police force.  2 pages, List 27.

EVANS, Joseph Westley, deserted wife Honor at Richmond in 1890, leaving her with 4 children.  She asks financial assistance to go to Sydney, has a daughter there.  Report on her by the Charity Organisation Society.  27 pages, List 24.

EVANS, Joseph Westly.  Wife Honor enquires from NSW in 1895.  He deserted her and is living with another woman in Fitzroy.  Police find he has died and his brother Captain Robert of Box Hill has paid funeral expenses and was supporting him.  8 pages, List 27.

EVANS, Mrs. Margaret, wife of Evan Evans, mail contractor, wrote from Rheola in 1896, complaining of local constable.   Her husband wrote explanatory letter; she was drunk and he sent for the constable to assist him.  She had previously signed the pledge but ‘had broken out recently’.  10 pages, List 33. 

EVERINGHAM, Lydia.  Claims she was raped at Carlton in 1897; medical examination says no trace.  Admits that she had been drinking and made up story.  2 pages, List 20.

EWART, Prof Alfred.  Government botanist, re complains in 1908 of Alfred BURKETT, who has some of his furniture for repair and has not returned it.  12 pages, List 5.

EXCEL (or C.C.) cutter, supposed wreck of fishing vessel near Cunninghame in 1898.  Crew were William CARSTAIRS and Ned CURRIE, both late of Lake Tyers.  Area searched, but nothing found.  14 pages, List 21.

EXON, Edward, wrote from Melbourne Orphan Asylum in 1873, requesting information on former inmate Anny ABBOTT, who left in 1867.  She lived with uncle John William SUTTON at South Melbourne, was later at Majorca/Maryborough area.  Found.  2 pages, List 31.

FAIR, Mrs. Mary nee CAUL, occupier of Coffee Palace Yarrawonga in 1896.  Premises caught fire, servant Isabella WATSON raised alarm; police have suspicions it was deliberate. 13 pages, List 30.

FAIR, Minnie, Toorak.  Wrote re her husband who went to the U.S. and divorced her.  She has 2 children and needs assistance.  2 pages, List 18.

FAIRBURN, Harry, elderly, found in destitute condition in Mansfield in 1898, local Nelson PETERS paid to take care of him for 4 weeks, but he dies.  Claimed to have had a brother James in Sydney.  Police there find James’s widow Charlotte Lindsay Fairburn, but she says man is imposter, Harry died years ago.  Police confirm that’s who he was.  16 pages, List 21.

FAIRS, David.  Father Eric Newton Fairs sentenced to gaol in Adelaide, gave his son David to a woman, (a prostitute) who in turn gave him to a Mrs. BUCHANAN of South Yarra, to look after, and subsequently married – SCARLETT, and now, 1938, claimed David back.  Police ascertain that the child’s mother is known as Sybil O’NEILL, and that she and the father were divorced.  David sent to father.  5 pages, List 2.

FALL, John, of Meerlieu near Stratford. File re suspected poisoning of family and ill feeling between them and neighbour John McCamey. 28 pages.

FLEXMORE-CONLIFFE, Frederick Charles.  Wife writes from Kalgoorlie in 1906; he left her and child in Perth 3 years ago and went to Melbourne to obtain work, but has sent little money.  Is a scenic painter, formerly employed at the Wax Works in Bourke Street.  Found.  List 24.  CONNECTION FOUND.

FLOOD, Nellie, Ward of the State, 1900. Living at Echuca when charged with setting fire to haystack of Mrs. Annie MASLEN with whom she was living. Makes claim again Constable George FAULKNER of Echuca which is investigated and disproved; taken to Good Shepherd Convert. 30 pages, List 2.

FLOWER, Albert C.  A child living with Mrs. Elizabeth REICHEL/RIGHTELL in Fitzroy in 1899, neighbours report her cruelty to Society for Prevention of Cruelty who ask police to investigate.  Mother of child has remarried to Thomas TANGYE and is now living in NSW.  26 pages, List 17.

FLOWERS, Nellie.  File re her adoption from the Infant Asylum by Mr and Mrs. Fred SHOLER, subsequent complaint about Mrs Sholer being a prostitute, removal of Nellie and placement with Mrs. E. MOLONEY.  Nellie was 7 in 1894.  41 pages, List 13.

FLYNN, Thomas, publican at Beveridge in 1866, complains to police of sly grog sellers, 6 pages, List 14.

FOGG, R., wrote from Albert Park in 1904, asking police to help get his sister Dorothy away from her father who was neglecting her.  Police can’t interfere; file gives background.  5 pages, List 10.

FOLKS, William.  Query in 1902 whether he can be charged with an offence as he also uses the name LINDSAY.  He is illegitimate, his mother subsequently married Lindsay.  7 pages, List 16.

FORD/FOORD, George.  Wife Ann of Carlton fears he has deserted her, 1869.  He is Cornish, 44 yrs old, they have two children, she is destitute and has breast cancer.  10 pages, List 4.

FORTESCUE, Arthur H., wrote from East Charlton in 1903, applying to become a sly grog detective.  4 pages, List 19.

FORTUNE, Thomas. Charged with vagrancy 1914, born Victoria c1855, widower, given room in private home in Carlton by Elizabeth HALL.

FOSS, Alice, writes from Gunnedah NSW in 1900.  Husband Thomas, former policeman at Balranald, supposedly left Melbourne for home, but she’s heard nothing for some months.  Not found.  10 pages, List 22.

FOSTER, Mrs. Elizabeth, Dandenong State Forest, asks for help in 1896.  She has 2 children of her own and 4 grandchildren, 12, 10, 8 and 6, children of Abel KAY, to maintain and can’t find food for them.   Police report she has a house and land near the Mitcham Railway Station and a shop and cottages in Collingwood let to Jack WREN for a tote.  16 pages, List 36. 

FOSTER, Mary, asks in 1896 if the Foster who is on trial for fraud in Sydney is her husband Thomas.  They have been married for 21 years, were in North Qld for 4 years when he suggested she go ahead to Melbourne and he would join her, but he never did.  She is 55 and ‘getting up in years’ and needs support.  Not him.  5 pages, List 37. 

FOSTER, William.  His unnamed wife in Brisbane Hospital writes to police in 1904, wanting him to support her as she is leaving there shortly.  He was living in South Melbourne.  Police find he died that year, but beforehand declined to help her because she had left him 11 years previously.  7 pages, List 10

FREDERICKSON, Mrs. Catherine of Richmond. Applied to run a travelling show in 1895; ’she is a lady boxer, girls are high kickers and songsters, men heavyweight lifters and sword swallowers’.

FREEDOX, John, sought by solicitor in Sydney in 1895; had been in Tasmania, formerly in Salvation Army, now living with Mrs. MOOD.  Found in gaol.  8 pages, List 25.

FREEMAN, H. of Sydney, wrote in 1917, seeking details of Albert BUCKLEY, a former Melbourne abortionist.  Included physical details and a pencilled sketch.  7 pages, List 3.

FREES, Mrs. Boarding House Keeper, Melbourne, wrote in 1896 re Robert and Rachel Ida THOMAS and their two chilldren Augustus and Maude had come to stay with her the previous year.  Both parents left, promising to pay for children’s care, but had never done so.    Rachel Thomas had previously kept a hotel in Perth WA; her first marriage was to HAZEL, a hotelkeeper in Qld.  Couple found in Sydney, impoverished, and Maud sent to them.  14 pages, List 36.

FRENCH ISLAND PROGRESS ASSOCIATION.  Complain to police in 1915 about Miss Edith LOWE of Northcote, who arranged two concerts there in aid of the Red Cross, but has refused to hand over the proceeds to them.  15 pages, some in pencil.  List 2.

FRESHWATER CREEK.  Fire destroyed property, formerly a hotel, now a house rented by Mr. BUCKLEY who had just left.  Property owned by Mrs. Catherine SKINNER.  Insurance company suspect foul play, ask report.  36 pages, List 30.

FRIEND, George H. Secretary of Post Office and Telegraph Department Annual Road Race organisation in 1899. Asks police department to reconsider their ban on bike road races as the event has already been organised; department agrees. Poster advertising race on file. 5 pages, List 2.

FURLONG, Mary Cecilia, rang away from her home in Brighton in 1894, aged 16 years.  Father William R., professor of music, takes out warrant and charges her with vagrancy.  Anonymous letters claim she was ill-treated by step-mother MACKAY nee DOUGLAS.  In 1896 police interview neighbour Mrs ANDERSON and others who confirm claim.  Suspicion that she may have been murdered and house and grounds searched, but nothing found.  Cousin Mrs. Thomas CHAPLIN receives letter from her; various other relatives are interviewed, but no trace.  Brothers were William and Frank.  Stepmother’s claims to having been ’in society’ in Queensland disproved.   Not found.  Faded photo of Mary on file.  See instructions re how to order copy of a photo.   Very large file, List 37

GALE, Samuel. Married Hannah MURPHY in Cork Ireland in 1872 as GEALE; married Belinda LOFT in Melbourne in 1885. Bigamist.

GALLAGHER, George, Singleton NSW wrote in 1904, detailing his troubles and asking police for help to find his wife Ernestina and their seven children.  Police find she is in gaol and the children in the Industrial Schools.  6 pages, List 11.

GALLAGHER, Kenneth Percival.  Someone, possibly his parents, (letter not on file) enquired for him in 1900.  Letter on file confirms he jumped overboard from the New Guinea while working his passage; had a brother in South Africa.  Letter from E. EDWARDS of Fernbank Gippsland on file, cousin Harry CORKE interviewed.  14 pages, List 22.  See also Missing Friend entry.

GALLERY, Francis.  Wrote from Melbourne in 1914, complaining about local police harassment since 1909.  In that year Patrick JOYCE attempted a robbery nearby, and was shot by police.  Police report he has a drinking problem. 7 pages, List 3.

GALLOP, George.  Wrote from Colac in 1904, offering police free samples of his medicinal oil for treatment of sore feet.  List 16.

‘GAMBIER’ SHIPWRECK, 1891. Body identified by son as Mrs. TREWENACK and sent to Adelaide, but daughters say it is not her. Then believed to be wife of Joseph BAKER of Broken Hill, but he says she’s really the wife of Albert DAVIDSON, butcher of Redfern.

GANNAWAY, James Frank., former clergyman, arrested in 1895 for incest on daughter Alice Emily at Nunawading.  Her seven children by him were all taken into care.  Medical bill for childbirth disputed by police department.  27 pages, List 31. 

GARBUTT, John and family, of South Melbourne.  Suspected poisoning of, 1894.  6 pages, List 13.

GARRICK, Mrs. Teresa, died in Fitzroy in 1896; body exhumed as police suspect an abortion; mother Mrs. Ellen HENDY says she had a stillborn child.  21 pages, List 131. 

GARRIGUES, Benoit Andre, died Tarnagulla 1875.  French Consul in Melbourne asks details re cause of death, will etc., in 1898.  Detailed report provided.  4 pages, List 19.

GARSDEN, W.  Wrote from Northam, W.A. in 1900, asking police to try and find his watch, lost when arrived in Melbourne from U.K. and drunk.  3 pages,  List 14.

GARTH, Murray.  Complicated story involving Ida HYAMS (divorcee) who went into partnership with him in Garth Trading Co, but they had a falling out.  In 1931 he was tied up and assaulted by Frank ROBERTS, her gardener, (lived in Camberwell) and Albert EASTWOOD, her driver, (lived at Port Melbourne).  Large file, List 4.

GARVEY, Bridget. Gave birth to illegitimate child 1894; charged with false registration and abandoning it. Two files.

GASCOIGNE, Captain James.  Believed to have died in Torres Straits shipwreck in 1869.  Widow Harriet requests any papers etc. found be given to her.  Query re case from Brisbane.  She is second wife, first wife was Sarah.  5 pages, List 4.

GASPERO, Matteo.  Admitted to Kew Asylum in 1914.  Brother Jins wrote from Currawarra NSW, asking details.  8 pages, List 32.   

GATELY, Mary Ann, licensee of the Gelantipy Hotel, Buchan, charged with licensing offence in 1895.  Brother Thomas COX.  12 pages, including newspaper cuttings, List 28.

GATENBY, J.W. of Clifton Hill, wrote in 1906.  He had been assaulted by larrikins.  Police report that his 40 year old son, who is ‘not in his proper state of mind’ had attacked them first.  10 pages, List 4.

GAUDION, John.  Shot by 22 year old Arthur LAMBLE near Healesville in 1901; Gaudion’s wife was Clara.  41 pages, some difficult to read. List 4.

GAUNT, T. Watchmaker, Bourke St., complains of musicians busking on footpath, 1880.  5 pages, List 4.

GAUSLAND, Caroline, wrote from Port Adelaide in 1912, asking if man who shot himself in Melbourne was her husband Neil HANSEN.  She has not lived with him for over 12 years.  He uses different names but right one was Christian Enval Endresen Gausland Neil.  Police reply it is not her husband.  4 pages, List 33. 

GAVIN DUFFY, J., solicitor, asks in 1905 that Eugene HERLIHY be admitted to force although a ‘trifle too short’; refused.  2 pages, List 23.

GAY, William, married M.M. MURPHY in New Zealand in 1876.  The pair came to Victoria.  In 1887 he was offered a government position in Hamilton; she refused to go there and they have been separated ever since.  In 1894 he is shire engineer at Stratford and alleges she committed bigamy with David BOYDON in 1890.  4 pages, List 24.

GAYNOR, E.J., ex constable No. 4104, seeks readmission to the force in 1895.  He resigned in 1889 to help father who had been persuaded to buy the CREMEAN HOTEL in Swan St., Richmond, and found the manager a drunk and a gambler.  2 pages, List 29.

GAZE, Edwin Thomas, Kew.  Attempted suicide in 1903, recovered.  Family requests to be kept from newspapers.  Police intend to charge, but Chief Secretary instructs them not to do so.  5 pages, List 19.

GEARY, Patrick. Hanged for murder. Mary KENNEDY of Fitzroy claims body, claiming he is her brother. No truth in her claim.

GEDDES, Margaret.  Murdered at Shepparton in 1898.  Large file.  List 22.

GENDLE, Ada A.  Wrote from Stanmore NSW in 1906 re a Mr Gendle who left England many years ago, would now be 6-70 years.  Her late husband was trying to find him, possibly a relative.  James GENDALL found, but says he is not the person sought.  13 pages, List 14.

GEOGHEGAN, Kate, sought by mother Mrs. Catherine, Deniliquin NSW in 1896, last heard of in Geelong.  Not found.  11 pages, List 33.

GEORGE, Elizabeth Jane and Edward, living at Ross’s Creek, Woods Point in 1906.  She writes objecting to a prohibition order placed on them by local constable.  Report states their children are neglected and ill fed as they spend money on drink.  7 pages, List 26.

GEPHART, Mrs.  Wrote from Daylesford in 1893 re newspaper report of child Emil Claud WILLIMOFF adopted by claimant of Robert RAND estate in NSW, now charged with fraud. She thinks it is her grandson, abandoned by his musician father, whose mother is dead.  Background of child and claimant given.  Warning: this file could be quite distressing to family members.  14 pages, List 25.

GIBBONS, Dr., Sydney, published a 6 page booklet on nervous diseases and cures in 1896.  Mrs. HEADEN of Carlsruhe forwards a copy to the Chief Commissioner, asking for legal action; local school children found copies strewn around.  Locals interviewed include WEST family, SKIDMORE and school teacher Mr. WORTHINGTON.  12 pages, List 36. 

GIBSON, Edward. Attempted suicide at Northcote in 1918; wife Rose Ann. 7 pages.

GIBSON, Henry, sought by son Alfred of Flinders St. in 1898.  He was a cabinet maker, left his wife in Adelaide; she is now dead and is his other son.  Not found.  14 pages, List 21.

GIBSON, Mrs. Mary Jane.  File re a fire in a house occupied by her in St. Kilda in 1865.  Her proper name was DUNDEN, and police and insurance company suspect the fire was deliberately lit.  12 pages, List 4.

GILBERT, Ada, 15 years old in  1898, gives birth to illegitimate child at Epping; is in service to Edward TOUBURN and wife, who adopt it.  Police suspect he is father.  10 pages, List 21.

GILES, Thomas.  Died suddenly at the Family Hotel, Portartlington in 1899.  Report on; brother took body for burial.  3 pages, List 17.

GILMORE, Hubert S.  A Ward of State in South Australia, he is sent from there to Mrs. Sarah CURRAN in Sydney, via Melbourne.  8 pages, List 4.

GLANS, John, died Broadmeadows 1895, a Swede.  File re burial and sale of property.  24 pages, List 27.

GLASS, C.E.  Manager of Vic. Labor Institute, 1877.  Several letters from him and one from his clerk J.O. PENSON regarding the claim by William ALFREY that they had taken his money and sent him to J.B. ENDERS at Trentham for work, but there was none; he demands a refund.  Patrick DUNN mentioned as being employed at Enders, and several employment forms on file.  17 pages, List 5.

GLEESON, Catherine May.  Investigations regarding false information on a birth certificate in 1896; original enquiry not on file.  She was living with James Gleeson, brother of her late husband at Jumbunna, Gippsland, but the pair returned to N.S.W.  Not found and presumably certificate not altered.  11 pages, List 37. 

GLEESON, William.  Wife M. writes from Canterbury, Sydney NSW in 1898 that he has left her and gone to Melbourne ‘a woman has been the cause of it’.  9 pages, List 16.

GLOSTER, Fanny Maud. Sued Horton HOLDER, merchant and importer, for maintenance for two children, Gladys and Leslie, 1896.

GLOVER, Samuel, son of late Samuel Edmund Glover, theatrical manager, who died in Scotland in 1860, sought by solicitors re estate in 1898; his mother has died.  Police find he is dead and his widow remarried to George ROPER.  9 pages, List 22.

GODDARD, Mrs. Walter, nee Nora FLYNN of Co. Limerick Ireland, sought by sister Katie in 1904; arrived Melbourne c1884.  7 pages, List 8.

GODENZI, Ellen Sinclair, 7 years old, daughter of Eliza,  indecently assaulted at Murrumbeena in 1912.  Was playing with friends Ethel Haines, Jack BOX, Edie VIVASH and Robbie HILL when approached by unknown male and given a farthing, (which is on file) to accompany him.  13 pages, List  33.   

GODFREY, Ida. File re her actions in 1900; a Ward of the C/E Home for Children, Middle Brighton, she left her employer and lived with Thomas JEANS. She was then 17 years old, he 19 years old.

GOGGINS, Mrs.  Gipps St., East Melbourne, Applies for financial assistance in 1874, husband is surveyor.  Unflattering report.  5 pages, List 31.

GOODSIR, Mrs. Anne. A widow in poor circumstances, living in Sydney in 1894, with two sons and a daughter Ruby, 8 years old. Answered advertisement for couple seeking to adopt young girl and handed her to John NEWTON, who claimed to be married and live in Adelaide. Child taken to Melbourne, and after a few days left at a lodging house run by Peter LEARNEN in Melbourne. Police find Newton gave false details and return child to mother. 20 pages, including letter from Ruby.

GOON, Frank Sam. Chinese herbalist, Ballarat, 1909. Seeks evidence of wife Florence’s misbehaviour for divorce. Her maiden name is KEEN. 

GORDON, Mrs. A. of Bendigo, writes in 1899 re a man found dead at Temora, is it her husband Robert John who has been absent for some considerable time; he is 46 years old. Police reply it was a George Gordon who died. 14 pages, List 2. CONNECTION FOUND

GORDON, James.  Mrs. A.M. BRIGHT of Beleura Mornington writes in 1876 re his ill-treatment of his children at Balcombe Creek.  He is a brewer.  10 pages, List 6.

GORDON, Stanley.  Born 1897, mother Bessie McNEILL of Brunswick.  Abandoned him on doorstep of Mrs. ROSENWAX in Latrobe St. in error, meant for Selina SUTHERLAND’s children’s mission.  Bessie is a widow with 3 children and destitute, and wanted him looked after for a few months.19 pages, List 18.

GOREY, Mrs. H. (Alice) wrote from Yanko Siding via Narandera, NSW in 1912, asking police help in getting her 13 year old daughter home.  She had left with the QUINLIVAN family at Bass, Gippsland; “they were to keep her and treat her as one of their own” and pay the mother a weekly amount, which they reduced.  They then said they would no longer have her at all.  Police co-operate.  7 pages, List 33. 

GORMAN, Dennis, applies to join police force.  Mayor of Sebastopol, members of Ballarat Hackney Carriage committee and Ballarat councillors write in support, query why his name was taken off list.  10 pages, List 37. 

GORMAN, Patrick.  1866 file re his being allowed to change his Ticket of Leave district to Longwood, and subsequently issued with a free certificate (ie was a criminal released early).  14 pages, List 3.

GORMAN, Patrick and Mary.  Living at Wy Yung in 1896 when local clergyman, D.B. VERLIN of Bairnsdale, asks Minister to find somewhere for them to go.  Agreed they will go to Bendigo Benevolent Home under police escort.  22 pages, List 35. 

GOSCHE, Vesey R.  Writes from Sydney in 1906; he is Consul for Nicaragua.  His friend J.E. GIBSON recently arrived from Shanghai and went to Melbourne for a couple of days, but hasn’t returned.  7 pages, List 4.

GOSSLER, Frank.  Engineer, Melbourne, complains re actions of Mr. and Mrs. HEGARTY, who secretly arranged for Mrs. Kitty BRUEN to be admitted to Abbotsford Convent in 1915, 6 mths previously.  Mrs. Hegarty and her sister Kitty used to run the Railway Hotel at Yarraville, but the latter is an alcoholic. Gossler’s dau Mrs. Mona OGNAR is being blamed by Bruen, but she was innocent.  Another sister Mrs. POPJOY mentioned.   8 pages, List 2.

GOULD, Mrs. Elizabeth, wrote from Singleton NSW in 1907 regarding her niece Beatrice STONEHAM who she believes has committed suicide; police report no record of any such event.  5 pages, List 15.

GOURDIN, Pierre Joseph.  Large file re identity of unknown male shot by police (Constable DUNGEY)at Yarra Glen in 1892.  At first believed to be Gourdin, but French Consul says he is in New Caledonia.  Deceased ‘Joey’ came from Alsac; photo of deceased on file.  List 18.

GRABNER, Louisa, wife of Fritz, curator of Camberwell municipal gardens, sued husband for maintenance in 1906.  Complicated case in which she complained to his solicitor – ROBERTS, about his conduct, and he swore she was insane and had her locked up by police.  She was released after a few hours and issued a warrant against JP J.F. WALKER and solicitor ROBERTS.  13 pages, List 34. 

GRACE, Thomas Delores, charged with sending threatening letter to Mrs. Maria LAWLESS in 1895; had previously been charged with setting fire to their barn at Burramine, but been discharged.  Envelope in the name of KINGSLEY found in his possession.  She writes thank you letter to police.  24 pages, List 29.

GRAHAM, Alice.  1906 file, includes number of letters from her from Irrewarra.  Admitted to an asylum; identified as Annie McRAE from Portland; “seems to be madness in the family”; former lover George LAMBLE mentioned.  57 pages, List 4.

GRAHAM, George A., wrote from Redfern Sydney in 1896 re his brother William, a signwriter and decorator, not heard from for 2 years, believed to be in Victoria.  He has seen a report of a death; not his brother.  8 pages, List 36.

GRAHAM, James (7 yrs) and Mary Ann (5 yrs).  Correspondence from Bendigo of 1864 re their admittance to a reformatory rather than an industrial school; their parents were both in gaol.  4 pages, List 4.

GRAHAM, Mary. Murdered at Ballarat in 1908.  William V. ILES, butcher, 33yrs, suspected and sought.  Robert Henry CRAIG picked up in error for him.  Arthur DEVER found body.  Large file, including 4 pages concerning letter from William BURNS of Waverley Sydney NSW re his missing daughter Mary, who married Daniel LEHY.  List 3.

GRANEY, M. Wrote from South Australia in 1913 re his wife, whom he had sent home to her mother Mrs. Laura PLOWRIGHT in Grassy Flat near Bendigo. Chinese gardener KIM COOK/KOOK mentioned. 

GRANT COMMON SCHOOL.  Building being used, and three houses nearby were all destroyed by fire in 1866.  Houses were owned by M. SMITH, William REED and LEE Bros; woman PEACH is a witness.  2 pages, List 6.

GRANT, Daniel Joseph, Constable, suicided at Donald in 1905.  Large file includes report on background to event, letter from cousin etc.  Large file, List 23.

GRAVENALL, Mrs Mary Ann, c40 years, attempted suicide in home of siter Elizabeth MURPHY, North Melbourne, in 1912.  She had had a nervous breakdown previously.  Hospitalized.  Police decide against prosecution.  7 pages, List 35. 

GRAY, George.  Suicided at Cheltenham in 1894, and subsequently found to be William FLEETWOOD, who deserted his wife Julie 7 years ago in Parramatta.  He had a sister Mrs. G.W. THOMPSON in America.  The LARKIN frauds are mentioned, but no details given.  A copy of his suicide note is on the file, and letters from his wife.  20 pages, List 3.

GRAY, John, of Gray & Co., Swan Hill, wrote in 1902 re Fred SCOWN who owes him money; believes he is interstate, but it is his father.  4 pages, List 18.

GREATOREX, Thomas. See BEAUCHAMP, Elizabeth. Subsequent complaint from him in 1892, while living at Yabba Yabba near Dookie, about local constable. Police report reveals that his wife had an illegitimate child while he was living with Beauchamp/Brown.

GREEN, Alice, 17 years, gave birth to illegitimate child, which died, in 1904 at the Livingstone Home, Cheltenham, matron L. TRUDGEON.  Green is a Ward of the State and has been living with the family of Daniel DIFFY [DIFFEY?] at Tarawingee for 11 years.  She claims Diffy is the father of the child.  Police try to establish her birth-date in order to charge him with carnal knowledge, but have great difficulty.  Eventually they establish the following:  Her mother was Martha Margaret Agnes DONNOLLY, born Hobart, who married 3 times – to Joseph ABBOTT, Bernard GREEN and John LANGFORD.  She was living with another man when she had Alice in Carlton, and is herself now dead.  Prosecution dropped because of doubts of her age.  19 pages, List 34.

GREGORY, Joseph Ernest, died Yarawonga 1895; mother Mrs. A.R. Gregory asks details of money he had earned etc., had worked for Mr. THOM.  12 pages, List 30.

GREY, Edward, arrested at Malmsbury in 1867 during Waterworks Strike, charged with threatening language and sentenced to 3 months gaol.  Father Robert GRAY of Brunswick visits police headquarters and local residents in Fitzroy petition for his early release.  4 pages, List 35. 

GREY, Joseph Henry. Solicitor, Geelong, fled to Fiji with family, 1901. Large file.

GRIBBLE, James, wrote from Happy Valley in 1895 alleging Constable Ivey of Skipton stole government property, has illegitimate child etc.  Ivey refutes claims, has had Gribble fined at local court several times.  6 pages, List 29.

GRIBBLE, James.  Wrote from Happy Valley in 1899 re the ill-treatment of his mother by his father Theophilus ; asks police protection for her.  Local police report he is no better, that family dispute is at bottom of complaint.  7 pages, List 17.

GRIFFIN, Gertie.  Wife of Leslie of Amphitheatre, in 1913 she writes to her brother Hal and father McKenzie in Brunswick, re her unhappy marital state.  Claims her husband is having an affair with Mrs. HILL, licensee of the Amphitheatre hotel, and widow of the late J.J. Hill, a former constable.  List 15.

GRIFFITHS, Ada.  Barmaid, Reform Hotel Melbourne, is receiving insulting postcards and letters in 1908 and complains to police.  7 pages, List 5.

GRIMSHAW, Edmund.  John Hood enquires regarding him on behalf of Belfast relatives in 1877, was 2nd officer on board ship.  5 pages, List 5.

GRUNER, Amelia.  Reported missing by employer Zoe FORBES-EWAN of Elsternwick in 1899; returned after a few days.  5 pages, List 16.

GULLEN, Emily, died at Birchip in 1899, destitute; left 3 children, two of whom died shortly afterwards.  Her sister, Mrs. WISHERT, with whom she is living, now ill.  Husband Henry in NSW refuses to pay costs of burial or maintenance of children.  4 pages, List 17.

GURNER, John A., Crown Prosecutor; tenant of Frogmore Murrumbeena in 1902, complains of damage to property and annoying boys.  6 pages, List 18.

GUTHRIE, J.  Wrote from Western Australia in 1906, asking for his references to be forwarded to him.  He was previously in the Victorian police force, but dismissed in 1899, subsequently served in force there.  3 pages, List 4.

HALL, George, inmate of Gordon Insitute in 1907, 16 years, sent out with sheep drover to NSW, ran away and asked Wahgunyah police to help him to get back; is the son of Mr A. Hall, hairdresser, of West Melbourne, 3 pages, List 15.

HALL, John, labourer, born Victoria, 49 years in 1910, charged with failure to pay maintenance of his children Ivy May, Claude Patrick and Percy Harold, who are Wards of the State, and were committed at Collingwood.  Found in Adelaide, living with a Mrs. DAVIS under assumed name.  20 pages, List 22.

HALL, Kate.  Sister Mrs. F. CARRATT of Concord NSW writes in 1902, is concerned about her.  Report states picked up in Bendigo slums leading immoral life, was in a Mission Home, but left.  9 pages, List 18.

HAMIL, William.  Two letters from sister Mrs LABY in Cork Ireland in 1907 re her failure to receive anything from his estate.  William, James and John left Ireland  c40 years ago.  He died in the care of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Northcote in 1905.  His cousin Michael MANGAN is criticized.  6 pages, List 15.  CONNECTION FOUND.

HAMILTON, Mr. of firm of Thurling & Hamilton, reported in 1896 that his 10 year old son had left their home in Mercer Rd., Malvern.  Asks police help in finding him, but also asks matter to be kept quiet.  Child found.  7 pages, List 32. 

HAMILTON, Irene Auguste Douglas, sought by mother E.A. Douglas Hamilton of Hobart Tasmania in 1905.  Was working as a housemaid in Melbourne to a Mrs. MARSDEN, but letters returned.  Found.  7 pages, List 3.

HAMILTON, Andrew, died at Sunbury in 1895.  A cousin, James Hamilton, publican of Yanco Creek NSW was asked to pay his burial expenses, and was another relative William ANDERSON of Romsey.  24 pages, List 28.

HAMMERSLY, H., wrote from Bontherambo Hotel, Boorhaman via Wangaratta in 1896 re the lack of police presence in area.  Wangaratta police comment negatively on his character.  5 pages, List 35. 

HAMPTON TEA GARDENS.  Licensee Mrs. Alexandrina KRONHUBER.  1906 file re anonymous letters and complaint from WCTU re the running of a dancing saloon etc.  She was refused renewal of her license.  Constable Scammell defends her; his son worked there for awhile.  19 pages, List 34. 

HAMRIN, Louis.  Found dead in bed in loding house in Lt. Bourke St. by porter Charles BAKER in 1898.  Suicide.  A Swede, with no relatives in the colony.  List of property found and sold to cover burial costs.  6 pages, List 18.

HANNAN, A. of Glanville, South Australia, asks police to find son John in 1906; last heard of at Mirboo.  Found.  5 pages, List 4.

HANNON, Thomas, deserted wife and 3 children at Kyneton in 1865.  Found in Brisbane, and sends money for the family to join him months later, but insufficient.  He was born in Glasgow, is 29 years, a labourer.  34 pages, List 35. 

HARDBOTTLE, Walter.  Wife enquires in 1895 and 1897, incomplete file, her letters not extant.  He had brothers at Dollar near Foster.  12 pages, List 20

HARDY, James.  Unknown male, c54 years, died Melbourne hospital, 1895, believed to be him.  Photo taken after death on file.  Believed to have been in Omeo gathering herbs, but unknown there.  8 pages, List 28.  See instructions re photographs.

HARGREAVES, Mary.  Number of letters form her in 1877, including a copy of a legal account from Everett BARDWELL who evidently acted on her behalf; she is apparently in Kew Lunatic Asylum and her husband is overseas.  8 pages, List 5

HARRIS, Hannah, widow, Morrisons, gave birth to illegitimate child in 1896; son Herbert went for Mrs. LEWIS to help; child died, no suspicious circumstances.  2 pages, List 30.

HARRIS, Harriet, wife of James and daughter of Margaret WILLIAMS, widow of Richmond, made allegations of a robbery at her home in Quarry Hill in 1891, but this was found to be false.  In 1896 her husband sued the railways after being injured in an accident.  Crown Solicitor asks background of the couple, and this is supplied.  25 pages, List 37.

HARRISON, Hugh, sought by Mrs. J. BUTLER of Goulburn in 1902.  She wished him to send money for his child’s medical bills.  Not found.  8 pages, List 12.

HARRISON, Walter, alias GINGER, alias WALSH.  Brisbane police ask if he is know in Victoria, is on trial there for conspiracy.  Physical description given, and a letter to his brother Jack SCOTT is on file.  Police state he is James W. SCOTT alias Richard Scott, and his brother is in business in Fitzroy.  12 pages, List 29.

HARRISON, William G.  Wife Mrs. M. wrote to police in 1904, asking them to trace him.  He was formerly assistant town clerk of Port Melbourne, and was believed to have gone to the Cape Colony, leaving her and their 3 children behind.  4 pages, List 14.

HART, Emily Maud.  A servant, of Kensington, had an illegitimate child, Harry Douglas Hart, in 1898, claimed maintenance from father Alfred ROBERTS, a 22 year old Victorian, but he cleared off interstate and was not caught.  She subsequently married William Robert PYLE at Bacchus Marsh; he claims while he was drunk.  Complicated case regarding whether she had another child and what she had done with it.  13 pages, List 6.

HART, L.H., wrote on letterhead of Madame DEMARET, Flinders St., Melbourne in 1895 re plainclothes policeman who enquired for him.  Two letters.  5 pages, List 28.

HARVEY, Gertrude Mary, 4 years old in 1895, was sexually abused by WON POY HEM, who was gaoled for the offence.  File covers correspondence re medical expenses.  16 pages, List 28.

HASSAN, Thomas, Fitzroy, receives letter from P. NETLEY, boarder of Simpson St East Melbourne in 1895, advising that his daughter Mary Phoebe is very ill and needs help.  She died and father finds a 12 month child in the house and an assurance policy in the name of the child, Harold Walter PHILLIPS.  Asks police to find father, doubts they were married.  Police cannot find him.  21 pages, List 28.  CONNECTION FOUND.

HATTON, Kate, wrote from Nth Sydney in 1905, has heard her husband George James Hatton, jeweller, has died; they have been separated for some years.  Confirmed.  6 pages, List 23.

HAUTMONT, Prof. Leo.  Someone, probably him, sent poster advertising his ladies French Safety Pills, brochure and postcard to fictitious people at Sutton’s Coffee Palace, Launceston.  Local police forward on with request charge him.  10 pages, List 36. 

HAWKINS, Horace. Of Longwood South Australia. Writes re his brother in law Robert DAVIES who divorced wife in Victoria on grounds of desertion, but had paid her to go to South Africa. Subsequently married wealthy Bertha CAMPBELL, with whom he’d been living in South Australia; writer thinks he is exploiting her. 1906.

HAY, Mrs. Hubert Godfrey Gladstone Shaw of Paddington N.S.W. Wrote in 1918 re a letter to her husband from President Wilson of the United States, commending his scheme for the sinking of submarines. It was given to H.H. Champion of Melbourne for safekeeping, but has not been returned. 7 pages.

HAYES, Herbert, charged with being a neglected child in 1898, stowed away 3 times from Sydney to Melbourne.  Mother in Woollomooloo contacted, will pay to have him returned home, so handed over to charity group to arrange return.  9 pages, List 23.

HAYES, Samuel.  Chief Commissioner Frederick STANDISH enquires about him in 1873.  He was found starving in the Eastern Market as a lad some years ago, and given a job in the Depot Hospital.  Now married.  1 page, List 31.

HEALEY, William wrote from Devonport Tasmania in 1902.  Has read of death of Charles Healey in Victoria, asks if this is his brother, not heard from in 4 years.  Police report it is another person.  4 pages, List 21.

HEHIR, Catherine.  Formerly of Cunninghame, but moved to Bairnsdale in 1908 and ran a shop.  File re being robbed; Mrs. Isabel THORBURN complains to police re being suspected of the robbery, and gives her background of respectability.  9 pages, 4 very faint.  List 4.

HEINNEN, Mary Amelia. Daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth nee CASTLEMAN, born 1878. Gave birth to an illegitimate child in 1894 while living at Dunolly with James SMITH, who is charged with carnal knowledge, but eventually married her to prevent court case. 14 pages.

HEINRICH, CORRIE. Took out warrant for Albert ALLINGHAM alias COLLINS alias Henry WORT, for child desertion 1928. She has four children to him. 

HELLER, Sigismund Robert, married Kate Agnes JORDAN in 1878, then Annie BLISS in 1895.  Then went to Goulburn and married Amy DOUGLAS c1896.  Amy writes from Newtown Sydney in 1898, found out he was married and had 8 children living in Richmond.  He has now left her with a child and no income.  Reports on his activities.  26 pages, List 22.

HENDERSON, James. Described as ‘an aged miner’ he died at Wentworth River in 1900. Dargo police had to arrange burial, contact relatives etc. His sister was Mrs. HALDAN of Burnley.

HENDERSON, Joe H.  Accountant, Boulder Council, W.A., wrote in 1917 re his wife Elva who left three of their children with him in 1916, and was believed to be in Melbourne.  Her father was Rev. R.J. DADDOW of Adelaide.  6 pages, List 3.

HENDERSON, Sarah Jane, deserted by husband James in 1896, and took out a warrant.  In 1912 she found out where he was living and asked police to apprehend him, but they were slow to do so.  Eventually arrested in Northcote and taken before magistrate, but he ruled warrant was too old and discharged him.  10 pages, List  33.   

HENDRY, James. His body found at Rochester in 1882, but real name was HENLEY. He was born London, c60 years old, and single. His brother Robert predeceased him. 8 pages, List 2.

HENNESSY, James.  Wrote from Adelaide in 1894; hadn’t heard from his daughter Mrs. J.H. MADDEN of North Melbourne for some time and worried about her.  Found.  4 pages, List 3.

HEPBURN, Mary.  Information sought by Secretary of the Royal Commission of the Patriotic Fund, London, in 1896. She has not answered letters.  Found living with her son William.  6 pages, List 37.

HEPWORTH, Margaret. Large file re her claim of forced marriage to AH HIM, (she 18 years, he 60 years) in 1885 by her mother Mrs. CONDY. Her sister [Mary] Ann was married to HUNG CHOE.

HERBERT, William Henry of Carlton.  Applied to join police force in 1898, but was rejected because of a varicose vein.  Encloses doctor’s certificate in an attempt to have the decision changed.  3 pages, List 3.

HERKES, R.N., wrote from Yannathan, Gippsland in 1906, re neighbour lighting fires which burnt his property.  Evidence given from William KELLY, Rowland HERKES, Vilma WILDES, Roy ADDISON, Harry WILDES.  11 pages, List 27.

HERTZ, Leslie.  Only son of Caroline, widow of a Dane, in Melbourne.  Went missing, aged 22 yrs.  Found, 1919.  3 pages, List 4.

HESPERIDES arrived at Williamstown in 1895.  Captain WAWN had crewmen Herbert SCHULTZ, Walter FUERST, Adolph FURCH, Charles JOHN, Alexander PUTTNING charged with stealing goods.  They planned to blow up the ship but plans reported.  Evidence given by James BLACK, Carl FLODIN, Hans LIND, Neils KROGH.  His son Charles Ernest Wawn also on board.  11 pages, List 29.

HESLOP, Robert and John, leather merchants, Preston, took over the Cape Paterson run in 1895, in the name of their clerk John H. BURGESS, and placed Thomas MARTYN in charge.  File re allegations of sheep stealing by them, including complaints from John St. CLAIR, manager of Greaves farm at Keriak and J. RIDGWAY.  39 pages, List 35. 

HEWITT, Henry David.  Deserted wife Mary Ann nee CALLOW in 1887; born Castlemaine, engine driver.  She took him to court, but maintenance never paid.  In 1898 she writes to police, has heard he is at Walhalla.  Police report he is there, married to a Miss VAUX and has 5 children to her.  Copy of first marriage certificate on file; Callow was born Launceston Tasmania and 16 when married.  Both wives are informed of the bigamous marriage but decline to act.  19 pages, List 21.

HEYNE. F.  Writes from Northcote in 1906; he was knocked off his bike and injured on Point Nepean Rd near Cheltenham by a motor car.  10 pages, List 4.

HICKEY, William, 26 years, painter, sought by brother Christopher, painter, Melbourne, in 1895; last heard of in 1888.  Mother has previously enquired for her husband and their father James B. Hickey, who had died in 1892.  10 pages, List 36. 

HICKLING, Maud H. c37 years and brother Money George c35 years sought by Mrs. Jane BARRY of Napier New Zealand, on behalf of their mother in 1907.  The father Charles Maddock Hickling died in Cooktown Qld in 1878.  He had remarried and had 4 children by his 2nd wife.  After his death the widow married a Mr. DAVEY.  The mother had tried previously to find them in 1898.  14 pages, List 22.

HICKMAN, John.  Wife wrote from West Melbourne in 1895; he went to Bunbury WA, leaving her with 4 children.  Found.  6 pages, List 28.

HICKS, Tom of Bulumwaal, returned soldier.  Anonymous complaint in 1938 to Vic. Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children, claiming he is ill treating his children Elsie, William, Alice, George, Mark.  The mother has deserted.  3 pages, List 2.

HIGGINS, Ada, 15 years, living at Balaclava.  Swallowed Lysol at Richmond in 1912 and taken to doctors, where she recovered.  Police decide not to charge her with attempted suicide.  7 pages, List 33.

HIGHLEY, George Henry.  Sought by brother Herbert in 1896; he left Jumbunna in 1895, 36 years, native of Bedford, had been in New Zealand, 18 pages, List 14.

HILTON, Mrs. Edward, formerly Maria POOLE, wrote from Orange, New Jersey, USA in 1896 asking for address of company she bought shares in in 1866 and has never received a dividend.  She left Australia in that year.  2 pages, List 31. 

HOBAN, T., of Broadford.  Writes in 1898, asking if he is to be employed by department; have lost their baby there.  Has a job offer in Qld, but will stay if likelihood of work.  2 pages, List 16.

HOBBA, R., Bowenvale, compalains of Constable GARRETT paying attention to his wife in 1898.  2 pages, List 16.

HOBBS, George, 30 years, coach driver, deserted wife Mary Eliza at Redfern NSW in 1912, after ill-treating her and getting another woman pregnant.  Not found.  Very small photo on file.  14 pages, List 33.  See instructions re copying photographs.

HOGAN, Alice. Gave birth to illegitimate male child in Melbourne 1873, under age. Father Michael a printer in Fitzroy, mother Alice. Claimed Constable Bartholomew O’CONNOR father of child; acquitted.

HOGAN, Anne.  Master in Lunacy asks for details of her background in 1869.  Was admitted to asylum in 1866, sister married Laurence BAGNELL, of Duck Ponds but has died.  Parents were from Co. Tipperary.  4 pages, List 4.

HOLDING, Robert, embezzled funds of Cohuna Irrigation and Water Supply Trust, of which he was secretary, in 1895.  Large file re prosecution of him.  List 26.

HOLLAND, Edward. Arrested for murder of two year old Fred GEACH in 1901; his background given. 10 pages, List 2.

HOLLAND, Sarah of Leichardt NSW, wrote in 1901 re Edward Holland being arrested for murder of Fred Geach.  Her missing husband’s name was Edward; had spent some time in a lunatic asylum, was a compositor, English and 53yrs old.   Asks if this is the same person – no.  Details of other Edward Holland given.  6 pages, List 4.

Police find he was the illegitimate child of Eliza Geraldine PICKERING, who was herself the adopted daughter of Mrs. Hoof, who kept the Cumberland Arms Hotel, Sydney Road Brunswick. Bert was born Albert Pickering in 1879, and adopted by Mrs. Hoof. Florence Pickering, sister of Eliza also lived with Mrs. Hoof, but was overseas at the time of Bert’s death.

HORN, Herman.  Wanted for fraudulent insolvency on Edward William SMAIL.  He was a German Jew, 36-40yrs of age, believed to have gone interstate or overseas.  Large cardboard backed photograph on file. 31 pages, List 4.

HORNBLOWER, Sophia.  Wrote in 1904, asking for the papers found on her deceased brother Joseph MARSHALL to be given to her.  Incomplete file, 1 page, List 4.

HORN, John  Wrote from Queenstown near Port Adelaide Sth Australia in 1888.  Has seen a newspaper cutting referring to death of James HORN in Melbourne, and asks if it is his brother who left home c15 yrs ago and hasn’t been heard of.  Police find deceased was son of James Horn of Glasgow Scotland and not his bother.  6 pages, List 5.

HORNER, Mrs. William nee Lydia Archena MARTIN.  Wrote from Surprise Creek, Winton, Qld., in 1902, asking police to trace relatives, and encloses a list.  Those named were uncles Harry Starkest and James Artemas Martin, brothers of her father Joel Archibald Martin, who died in Toowoomba c1876; their sister Archena, and their parents Edward Norman Harry Starkers and Archena Martin.  Not found.  8 pages, List 21.

HORNSEY, Thomas, wanted in 1912 for failure to pay outstanding maintenance order at Geelong West for 3 illegitimate children by Kate Murphy; 40 years, works on wharves.  8 pages, List  33. 

HOSIE, Mary Ann.  Seduced by Constable George DONNELLY at Naring, Lower Murray and became pregnant.  Her father complains to police headquarters, she is only 16 yrs old, and Donnelly subsequently marries her in 1865.  14 pages, List 3.  CONNECTION FOUND

HOWARD, Mrs. B. of Parramatta, asks police help in getting her husband to support her; he has been living in Melbourne with another woman unde the name De Graves.  11 pages, List 3.

HOWDEN, Charles, trading as Howden & Co., Collins St., Melbourne.  Complaint in 1906 re fraudulent conduct in sale of land at Malvern Rd Hawksburn.  Mary Ann and Frank STRAPP wanted to purchase it, but W.D. CLOSE’s name was put on the title in an attempt to get more money out of Strapp.  Howden’s manager JAMIESON implicated.  Albert DIXON, manager of Land Mortgage Bank alerts authorities.  Authorities decide no prosecution, but Bank’s solicitors query this.  39 pages, List 34. 

HOYLAND, Charles Hugh, died 1896.  Local Registrar reports false information provided that he was married to Eleanor Marie BROPHY, but he was not. Police state he had a wife and 3 children in Doncaster England. Brophy appointed executor of Will, obtained probate then went overseas.  7 pages, List 37. 

HUDSON, William James.  Incomplete file, but he was a child of 15 yrs in 1918, with parents in Sydney, NSW, who ran away and was found in north east Victoria.  He had an aunt, Mrs. F. BEANLAND in Footscray.  4 pages, List 3.

HUGHES, Frank.  Lived in Hammer St Williamstown, a night watchman on the Railway Pier.  His wife took a child from the Industrial School and adopted it when 12 months old.  In 1892, when the child was nearly five, police removed it from their care.  He asks reason for this.  4 pages, List 12.

HUGHES, John William Enoch. Deserted wife and four children in 1920; was living with Ruby REYNOLDS.

HUNTER, John M., carpenter, living with Ellen COOKSON and his daughter Agnes at Reedy Creek.  In 1870 she brings child to Melbourne where police are alerted that the child is ill; 6½ years old, has venereal disease.  13 pages, List 30.

HURFORD, Stella. Aged 17, ran away to Sydney NSW, married mother’s former lodger Sydney PRIDAY/PRIDIE. Both charged, 1901; he suicides. Very large file.

HURLEY, Mrs.  Report of woman wandering in bush between Chiltern and Barnawartha in 1896, ‘appearing peculiar in her manner’.  Police locate and look after her, then send her on to her father John SLATER, farmer of Bobmiawarre (?) near Milawa.  She had been sent to him from the Gladesville Lunatic Asylum.  8 pages, List 37. 

HUTCHINSON, Joseph Patrick, sought by wife Kate in Sydney in 1906.  They lived in West Melbourne in 1890, she hasn’t seen him since, has had to support 2 children herself.  He is about 55 years old.  5 pages, List 26.

HUXTABLE, Florence.  Daughter of late Dr. Huxtable, stepdaughter of – BRYANT.  Aunt Mrs. BARTLY concerned about her; mother died and family home broken up.  She is under 17 yrs and believed pregnant.  Claim that Jack MERRIGAN paid for her to have an abortion.  1900.  16 pages, List 3.

INGHAM, James Herbert Ivey, M.D. Has a private hospital at Dimboola; comes to Melbourne suffering from insomnia and disappears. Brother in law C.H. LUCAS of Collins St., contacts police. Thought to have gone interstate but found drowned at St. Kilda in 1918. 25 pages and two photos, one of him and two nurses at his hospital.

IRVING, Captain G.G.H. of 1st Batt. Infantry Brigade Melbourne, provides reference to T. WALKER who is anxious to join Tasmanian police force, and asks Chief Commissioner to endorse, 1895.  1 page, List 28.

JACKSON, Clara Bell.  Mrs. Minnie SIMMONS of Moonee Ponds asks police for details of her family; her mother has 4 children by THOMASSON who were sent to the Industrial Schools.  She wishes to keep the girl herself, ‘is a connection’.  4 pages, List 31.

JACKSON, Mrs. E.A., wrote from Bullarto in 1904, wanting transportation details of convicts Henry JACKSON and John BENNET.  Police cannot comply.  3 pages, List 10.  CONNECTION FOUND

HILL at Happy Valley.  In 1896 wife reads Sydney newspaper report of death of Florrie Hunter who was living in a defacto relationship with Harry JOHNSON, and asks police if this is her husband; no.  13 pages, List 36. 

JACKSON, Lottie.  Found drowned at Middle Park in 1898.  Lived with Henry HAASE who wanted the gold wedding ring back.  10 pages, List 18.

JACKSON, Sarah.  Wrote from Rutherglen in 1881 re land application of Harriet E. PERRY, wife of George, but living with William STEWART.  Both were Kelly Gang sympathisers and he was a convicted felon.  8 pages, List 4.

JASPERSON, Frederick, wrote from Hurstville NSW in 1905 re his son Frederick who had been lured away ‘by a fast Woman keeping a bad house in Lonsdale St’ named Julia MACARTHY, he was under 21 yrs.  He was using the name WILLIAMS.  5 pages, List 11.

JEFFS, Andrew.  Deserted wife and children at Bendigo, believed to be in South Africa in 1904, but Durban police cannot trace.  10 pages, List 14.

JENSEN, Andrew/Peter, sought by wife Lizzie in Richmond in 1893; he was a seaman, was in Fremantle, she believes he may be in Sydney; she is staying with her sister.  Uses Peter, but real name is Andrew, Norwegian, has not sent maintenance, last heard of in 1892. Although her letter is dated ‘93’ the file regarding the search for him is 1903. 16 pages, List 6.

JONES, Louisa late BARRETT. Writes re daughter Edith Emily, sent from Industrial School as servant to Mrs. McNAB of Tullamarine and subsequently became pregnant, 1901.

JONES, John, sought by wife Sarah, Gracedale House near Heaslesville in 1896.  He was late of T. ROBINSON & Co, Melbourne.  He left her in 1893 to go to Sydney for work, and she hasn’t seen him since.  He was born in Sydney, would now be 46 years, son of William, formerly master of a grammar or high school there.  Not found.  9 pages, List 33. 

JORDAN, Albert, 32 years, plasterer, deserted wife Alice in Collingwood in 1899.  Found interstate.  7 pages, List 26.

JOY, John Robert.  W.E. Bate and Mortimer, house and land agents, Maritzburg, Natal, write in 1898 on b ehalf of his wife who hasn’t from him in four years.  Police find him with a wife and two children,  11 pages, List 16.

KALTHOFF, Alice M., wrote from ‘The Gunyah’ Corrimal NSW in 1912 re her husband, supposed to be living at Doncaster, deserted her 3 years ago.  He was German, 54 years.  Not found.  6 pages, List 32.    

KEANE, Michael, ex constable, charged with being drunk & disorderly and threatening to assault his wife Mary Jane at Hamilton in 1896.  He was the Court cleaner and they lived onsite.  Note on file states her brother was Alexander RADLY, recently released from Pentridge and ‘a criminal of the worst class’.  They are ordered to leave the site.  27 pages, List 36. 

KEATING, Mrs. Annie. Constable BAUDINETT charged with giving abortion drugs to her as she was pregnant to him. Case dismissed, 1900. He seeks re-instatement, resigned. Large file.

KEENE, Mary Ann.  Attempted suicide at Digby in 1899, after a drinking spree; a servant.  Charged, she signs pledge.  Letter from her on file.  23 pages, List 3.

KELL, Arthur, sought by father in law William LAITHWAITE of Brisbane in 1898.   He is nearly 70 and in ill health, seeks help.  Letter from Kell on file; found.   7 pages, List 22.

KELLETT, Winifred, became ill when locked up in drunken state in Sth. Melbourne in 1910, and taken to hospital.  Correspondence re unpaid medical account.  8 pages, List 24.

KELLY, Edward, last heard of at Hamilton.  Henry F. FOSTER wrote from Northam WA in 1902 on behalf of his father who was anxious about him, is only 16 years.  His mother is at Nhill.  Found.  6 pages, List 21.

KELLY, Edward, Braidwood NSW, wrote in 1905; has heard that William McKAY was hurt in a Bendigo mine.  He cleared out with Kelly’s wife and two children, Jack and Aggie,15 and 14.  No trace there. 8 pages, List 11.

KELLY, Henry of Melbourne, wrote seeking Henry COX, Irish, 30 yrs, had a brother in 12th Lancers, last heard of at Portland Vic.  Found.  5 pages, List 5.

KELLY, R.A., Korumburra, 1905, complains re charge of obstruction by his horse.  File includes 2 photos of streetscape, newspaper cutting, reports, sketch of site.  27 pages, List 23.

KELLY, Robert. Berwick, 35 years, charged with sexual act on Ellen SCOTT, fifteen year old servant, 1892. Case dismissed.

KELSON, Ethel, deserted by her husband c1902, gives birth in house of Arthur John DELLAR, where she is a servant, in 1904, and claims the child is legitimate.  Police decide no prosecution, as she pleads she will lose her position if the truth is known.  10 pages, List 34. 

KEMP, Florence Violet, 14 years old in 1910, left her home at Green Swamp, near Sea Lake when her father Frederick, carpenter and builder, discovered she had been using money meant to pay bills on buying things for herself.  Letter from father on file, unflattering report on her actions.  They had come from Lascelles via N.S.W.  12 pages, List 23.

KEMP, William.   Secretary of the Victoria Tender Board, fled owing money in 1894.  File details search for him interstate and overseas, and is quite large.  List 3.

KEMPTHORNE, William, writes from Newcastle NSW in 1895 re newspaper cutting about ‘the notorious Sydney criminal’ of that name convicted in Melbourne.  He asks details.  Police report that it was an alias of Henry IRELAND.  7 pages, List 26.

KENNEALLY, John.  Charged with carnal knowledge of 15 year old daughter Ellen in 1901 at Strathfieldsaye; she gave birth to a child.  Ellen changes her testimony however, stating that it was her brother Patrick who was the offender.  Witness statements on file from Theresa, Mary, John Kenneally, Mary Enright, Matthew Rundle.  Copies of birth certificates also on file. 91 pages, with some explicit details.  List 4.

KENNEDY, Edith, servant, gave birth to illegitimate child at Ascot Heath Station near Dartmoor in 1896. Handed child to groom Joseph MINOGUE, who placed it in bushes.  Police informed and find child alive, but it dies.  They are charged with infanticide and acquitted.  Nurse Catherine SIMKIN gives evidence.  Mrs. PHILIP is owner of Station.  22 pages, List 25.

KENNEDY, Harold Montague, left wife Laura c1899.  She asks police to find him in 1904.  He is the son of James, tuckpointer and bricklayer, and an aunt is Mrs. COOMBES of South Melbourne.  Not found.  8 pages, List 34. 

KENNY, A.L. Dr., Collins St. Melbourne. Will be touring overseas; seeks letter and permission to carry revolver, 1905.

KENNY, Alphonse, 21 yrs, fireman at Carlton Brewery, attempted suicide at Ascot Vale in 1912; had been drinking.  Father James Hugh Francis Kenny, mother Louisa.  John BROWN, drover, testified that they had been drinking together; William Ernest SIMPSON and Edward Addeman ACTON, rescued him.  13 pages, List 33

KER, Douglas, wrote from Broken Hill in 1904 seeking police help.  His wife Marianne Louisa had left White Cliffs Opal Fields with their children Maida, Alexander Charles Douglas and Edna Gertrude, to visit her sister Edith Emmaline BOXALL for a holiday.  Boxall’s employee Frank MORRIS went with them.  His wife has now left 2 of the children with his sister in Adelaide and disappeared; he thinks she is with Morris.   4 pages, List 34.

KERR, John, Nyora, wrote in 1896 on behalf of David, brother of late James KEARNS, who died at Swan Hill in 1895.  Kerr went to school with James, knows the family.  Wishes to know more about James’s estate, encloses part of David’s letter asking questions.  Executors were J.F. EGAN and J.C. WATSON; Curator declines to act.  11 pages, List 37.

KHULL, Edward. Failure to pay wife’s maintenance, ordered at Fitzroy court; his wife in Sydney complains, 1880.

KIDDELL, George.  Using the name Thomas JAMES, apparently had 3 children to his daughter Georgina in Victoria between 1891-1896.  Police alerted by his son in law Henry DARMANCOURT of Launceston Tasmania, but can’t secure proof before Georgina dies of cancer in 1896.  Initially Kiddell gives false information on death certificate, then seeks to correct it.  Police charge him with this offence but a magistrate dismisses the case.  Other daughter Mary HOOKEY mentioned.  Their mother was Mary Hart formerly BAKER.  Warning:  this is a confronting file.  60 pages, List 32.

KIRKMAN, Mrs. Sarah.  Owner/occupier of cottage cnr Bank St. and Nelson Rd. South Melbourne in 1898.  Report of fire.  2 pages, List 18.

KIRWIN/KIRWAN, John, disappeared from Boggy Creek Gippsland in 1886.  In 1895 suspicion falls on brother Michael having murdered him and buried him in a mine shaft.  File covers 1895-1898 and attempts to check mine shaft, costs involved etc.  Michael died 1898.  Large file.  List 20.

KITSON, H. of Coolgardie W. Australia, wrote in 1899 re his wife Olive Cowen (known as Dot) who had left him two years ago and was believed in Melbourne. Police report it likely she has gone overseas. 5 pages.

KITTSON, H.G. Cape Bridgewater, 1918. Writes re Mrs. Lillian Maud WILSON nee LIGHTBODY, who gave birth to a female child, registered as Jean WILSON, but her husband William Gilmore WILSON has been overseas for more than a year. The real father is a local (not named). Child subsequently given to Dept of Neglected Children.

KLOFKORN, Peter Christopher. Died at Inglewood Hospital 1881, came from nearby Berlin. File re burial expenses. 10pages, List 2.

KNELL, H., GUNNER, Queenscliffe Barracks, applies for police force, rejected as unsuitable.  4 pages, List 23.

KUEHN, Charlotte. Writes in 1915 disputing soldiers’ claims her husband was a German spy.

KULCZIJEKI [KULCZYCKIE] Enrico.  Austrian Consul Melbourne wrote in 1877 about this lad, whose father Anton had poisoned himself and wife some years ago.  8 pages, List 5.

KUPSCH, Fred.  His sisters write from Preston in 1894 after a newspaper report of two men frozen to death in Kiandra, asking if he was one.  Police report it was a false story.  11 pages, List 13.

KURRLE, Vernon Constantine.  In 1907 Isabel F. SHORT of Jumbunna issued a warrant for his desertion of her illegitimate child, which subsequently died, but she refused to cancel warrant in 1908.  11 pages, List 10.

LACEY, Emma Elizabeth.  In 1894 alleged her stepfather Robert WITCOMBE sexually interfered with her; he and her mother had gone to Sydney, she refused to join them.  12 pages, List 13.

LACY, Jane, Auburn, has child of Mrs J. STEWART, of Kalgoorlie, who has not sent maintenance, has had to be kept from school, no boots etc, 1903. 4 pages, List 6.

LAGING, William Robert.  Naturalised German living in Malvern in 1916, reports he had heard that ‘roughs’ intend to attack him because he is German.  His background given.  List 6.

LAKE BOLAC POST OFFICE.  Mary TILLOTSON asks police help because of obscene messages being placed on fence in 1896.  William VEALE writes similar letter, but she suspects it’s his family who are the offenders.  Note: offensive messages in file.  18 pages, List 37.   

LAMBERT, Sydney or ARCHER, sought by wife Esther in 1910.  He left her 3 months after their marriage in 1909; she obliged to live with Nuns.  He was 28 years, fond of drink, had been at Potilla then Echuca.  Not found.  10 pages, List 33.

LANNEN, Thomas M.  Sought by W. LYNCH of Newcastle NSW, a relative, in 1902.  Found.  7 pages, List 16.

LA TOUCHE, Ada, wrote from Paddington Sydney in 1895 re Gerald La Touche, a stranger in Melbourne, who wrote to her that he was ill.  4 pages, List 30

LATROBE STREET RAGGED BOYS HOME & MISSION. One page yearly report of activities, including photos of unnamed boys, and two sheets of letterhead, one blank, the other with a letter from secretary W. Minton. President was Clement Davidson. 1898. 3 pages, List 2.

LAURENCE, Frederick Bryant.  Charged with perjury at Castlemaine in 1897, over transfer of license of Commercial Hotel Guildford from Catherine FINLAY.  4 pages, List 3.

LAW, Walter, 51 years, left wife Esther and Child in Elsternwick in 1896, and went to Cornelia Station, but then left there.  Wife asks help to find him.  Found interstate.  11 pages, List 35. 

LAY, Mrs. Jane, Brighton, reports handbag containing over £200 stolen while she waited for arrival of son on troopship at South Melbourne in 1919.  Police doubt story.  3 pages, List 31.

LAZBROOK, John Holden. Murdered by John O’BRIEN near Inglewood in 1871. O’Brien believed living in NSW under name HOWE in 1881; his sister married to person of that name. Victoria police investigate. Large file, List 2.

LEAR, Bertie Babington.  Police investigate rumour that he attempted suicide at Tarraville in 1898.  His siter Mrs. NICOL interviwed.  6 pages, List 21.

LEE, John.  In 1908 filled in birth entry for child John Ellis Lee, claiming married to mother Lydia Wiley ELLIS, but was not.  8 pages, List 5.

LEECH, Sarah.  Master in Lunacy requests report on her background in 1869; admitted Yarra Bend Asylum 1860.  Husband John found to have died 1859, children not found.  17 pages, List 4.

LEFEVRE, H.L.P. and William J.H.C.  Neglected children of Isaac, who deserted them and their mother Eliza Jane in Frankston in 1898.  Correspondence re what to do with children.  35 pages, List 16.

LEMON, William.  Address sought by mother in Sydney in 1900, after she received a worrying letter form him; he is a boy.  12 pages, List 4.

LEMON, William John, pensioner, 70 years, died Kyneton in 1905.  Letter from brother Joseph Sanfield Lemon on file; paid burial expenses.  6 pages, List 23.

LEM SING, Silas, Creswick.  Complains of youths throwing stones at his house at night; report states he thinks they are after his European wife.  4 pages, List 22.

LESSING, Ernst. German Consul in Melbourne writes re the family 1888-1904. Ernst is a native of Skogen, Prussia, came to Victoria in 1887. His father embezzled money and the Prussian government thinks he has sent it to his son. Ernst married Ester Jane WARE and went to Mentone to farm. Father Friedrich arrived in 1890s and died here. Family still in poor circumstances in 1904.

LETHAN, David.  Tenant at 50 Roden St., West Melbourne when fire broke out in 1898.  Owner was Isaac WILLIAMS of Coburg.  2 pages, List 18.

LEVER, Mrs. George William, wrote from Windsor in 1894 to Sydney police regarding a newspaper report on two men who had died in the snow near Kiandra.  Asks if one is her husband who left some months ago.  Police report the story was false.  She has a large family and is destitute.  12 pages, List 13.

LEWIS, Mrs. M.  Wrote from Gembrook in 1899 seeking help in finding her son Evan M.J. MOYLAN who had run away from his employer, 8 pages, List 8.

LINDLEY, Reginald, sought by Miss Carrie BELTON, Queenston, Port Adelaide in 1896.  An artist, he left there about 6 months ago and hasn’t been in touch.  Not found.  10 pages, List 30.

LINDSAY, Mrs. E.J. of West Wyalong, NSW, wrote in 1898, asking police to find relatives of William QUINLAN, who died there after accident, aged c36yrs.  His father Thomas was dead, and his mother Mary had remarried.  His sister was Mrs. J.H. ALLEN of Mirboo.  Found.  5 pages, List 3.

LINDT, J.W. Hermitage, Black Spur. Fears than the man who assaulted him and was gaoled for three months will return and set fire to his place or worse, 1899.  CONNECTION FOUND

LISTER, John.  Threatened Captain EVANS of Albany Road Toorak in 1896 and making a nuisance of himself.  He had been gaoled in 1888 for inflicting grevious bodily harm and released in 1891; born 1843 England.  9 pages, List 32.

LITTLEWOOD, Henry, 36 years, died in 1870 at a Melbourne hotel, recently arrived from Liverpool.  Brother in law Joseph HUGHES, carpenter, identifies him.  Littlewood was married to his sister, who remains in Liverpool with 2 children.  File re disposal of property.  9 pages, List 30.

LLOYD, John, Samuel and Thomas.  Convicted, with Jimmy DAVIS, of cattle stealing at Benalla in 1865.  John BUTLER assisted police, seeks payment; three letters from him and details of case.  35 pages, List 4.

LODGE, Francis, died Stawell 1897.  Executors of his estate ask police help in finding missing money.  20 pages, List 20

LODINGTON, Kenneth William, sought by John McKENZIE of Albany W.A.  Their uncle Hugh McKenzie has died.  Found.  15 pages, List 16.  CONNECTION FOUND.

LOFTUS, Mary. Brothel in Lonsdale; details of court case involving her daughter Winifred, whose real name was WESTON. Henry CORNWALL, nearby resident, complains, 1885.

LOGUE, Mrs. T.  of Maryborough, Victoria, wrote in 1938 re her son George, who had been sentenced to 18 mths gaol at Mildura.  3 pages, List 2.

LOHDEN, John.  Writes from Sydney in 1906, re a body found at Cobram, which he thinks may be his brother William.  Police establish it was William ANDERSON.  5 pages, List 4.

LOHFF, Frederick Max. Sought by Mrs. TAYLOR of Hawksburn Road in 1905. She’s looked after his daughter Elsie for 2 years as he was destitute and a widower, living in a bark hut. He was supposed to pay maintenance but has not done so.

LONG, Mrs. Charles, wrote from Amherst in 1896 re her youngest daughter Esther COLLINGE, 14½ years, who was persuaded by John McPHEE Jnr, 30 years, son of the owner of Woodstock Station, to marry him and go interstate.  He has returned but her daughter hasn’t.  Asks police help.  A most interesting letter, giving all sorts of details.  Esther is found interstate.  9 pages, List 35. 

LONG, Oliver John.  Writes from Euroa in 1898; is on waiting list for police, asks when he is likely to be called.  2 pages, List 19,

LONGFIELD, Frederick B.  Son of H. Longfield of the Argus newspaper; in 1908 Tasmanian police report he was arrested there as being destitute; file re collection of items pawned, and passage back to Victoria, 11 pages, List 10.

LOONEY, Kingsley.  Malvern.  Letterbox blown up in 1934.  He rented a flat from Mrs. Elizabeth BARRY and her sister Miss Janet TOWNSEND.  11 pages, List 4.

LOPEZ, Sarah Martin. Her husband A. MARTIN, Redfern, writes in 1883. She has been an inmate of lunatic asylum, left four days previously and took ship to Melbourne. Photo of both on file.

LORDEN, Lewis, baker, formerly of Bendigo, wrote letter to Premier from Fitzroy, claiming he is the next Duke of Middlesex.  Police give his family background, father died in Hobart in 1879; he is delusional.  8 pages, List 37. 

LORDEN, Louis, writes a number of letters re a purse and pawn tickets stolen from him at Boggy Creek near Kyneton, while he was on his way to Echuca, seeking employment, in 1896.  The tickets are presented to pawn broker P. PERLSTEIN in Melbourne, and a coat and silver watch handed over.  The watch is a family heirloom, and he is keen to get it back.  He writes that he uses the name Charles Louis, but his real name is Louis.  35 pages, List 36.

LOVEWELL, G.H., photographer, left wife Maud in Melbourne c1894 and hadn’t paid maintenance; last heard of in NSW.  She asks police help in 1895 to find him.  Photo on file.  (see instructions re ordering of copies of photos.) Found.  6 pages, List 30.

LOWRY, John. Alias DALE and COOK. Bushranger, 1866; file re arrest and conviction. Reward offered by William JENKINS, carrier, Nth Melbourne, for horse stealing.

LUCAS, Charles D., charged with embezzling funds of the Chiltern Branch of the Amalgamated Miners’ Association, president George SKERRY.  Arrested in Qld and extradited.  Large file re procedures and costs involved.  List 28.

LYFIELD, Catherine. Second wife of Henry, and murdered by him in 1896. Allegations of incest by daughter of first marriage; a particularly revolting case.

LYNCH, William.  Travelling with Lynch’s Bellringers in Qld in 1919, he reports the windows in his home at Windsor have been broken again, after receiving word from his wife.  14 pages, List 3.

LYONS, Amy, living apart from her husband and with wharf labourer Thomas COOPER when she attempted suicide in Melbourne in 1910.  33 years, addicted to drink.  7 pages, List 23.
