RAVEN, Alice Sophia, Kerang.  Prosecuted for failing to register birth of illegitimate child Henry GURNETT (mother Mary Ann Mabel Gurnett) in her house within required time, but magistrate acquits.  Police prosecution of Richard BROWN for similar offence, child Mary, mother Margaret Brown, held back.  Judge orders case to be reheard, magistrate incorrect.  9 pages, List 18.

RAVEN, Violet, born c1897, illegitimate child of Mrs. T.C. RAVEN of Mackay, was left with Mr. & Mrs. P.C. MOULDER, who adopted her.  The couple parted and Violet was given an elderly couple in Williamstown Vic., to look after, with the Moulders paying for her care.  However they stopped payments a few years later.  In 1910 the mother requested police to help send Violet to her in Qld.  8 pages, List

REID, John William, died in 1906, 5 months old, while in care of nurse Mary O’BRIEN of Drummond St., North Carlton, a cripple and a widow.  His mother was Ellen.  File covers 1904-1906 and deals with O’Brien’s circumstances.  10 pages, List 25.

RITCHIE, Mrs. J., Bendigo, nurse, advised in 1905 that she had taken in Mona TONKIN, child of Gertrude, and Richard POWELL, child of Mary Jane Ellen HARTLEY, already has Thomas SMITH, child of Lily of Leongatha, although the mother was supposed to be taking him back.  Detailed report on Ritchie shows she had also taken in a child of Norah WADDINGTON.  Her registration cancelled and children removed.  14 pages, List 46.

ROBERTS, Christina Wilson, Carlton, charged in 1903 with having child Daisy Agnes STOBAUS in her care and not being registered.  Child’s mother Bertha has been living with her but went to get employment.  Father’s name given; quite a detailed file.  13 pages, List 49.

ROBINSON, Susan E., Footscray, 1897, wants to adopt her sister’s child Thomas Gordon DOOLAN.  Letter from child’s mother explains that she has 6 children and her husband is ill.  Report on Robinson states that she “lives with a man not her husband, was convicted of arson and is intemperate”.  Refused.  14 pages, List 20.

ROSS, Ettie, wrote to local constable in Carlton in 1902 asking help to get her son William Edward ROSS, born 1901, into State care; she has fallen behind in payments to nurse Mrs. Mary Jane COOPER.  She is in service with Mrs. PERDRIAN, Beecroft Sydney NSW.  9 pages, List 45.

Mother charged with manslaughter, but discussion whether Storr should be charged as child was born in her house and birth not registered, 1899.
